Skin Care ResearchThe stratum corneum of skin surface layer has an important barrier function to maintain the skin homeostasis.

It either prevents to enter external stimulants into the body or suppresses moisture evaporation. However, the stratum barrier function is reduced due to environmental and aging influences. As a result, the

beauty appearance is often impaired. In order to keep the skin beauty, cosmetic technology has evolved. But it has not been sufficient to completely

prevent the adverse effects on dry skin.A state-of-art fine fiber technology forms ultra-fine fiber membrane coating with a diameter of 1μm or less on

the skin. Compared to general fibers, this membrane coating has excellent adhesion property and does not lose

breathability. In addition, capillary force by fine fiber can spread the substances in formulation quickly and uniformly throughout the membrane and holds them firmly in the membrane. In this manner, we finally determined this technology could suppresses the moisture transpiration from the skin surface.

In order to verify the skin care effect, we conducted a two-week continuous test by two groups; 45 monitors, who have dry skin or dry-feeling, were divided into two groups. One group had used moisture transpiration control formulation only. Another group had used fine fiber membranes after using this formulation. And we compared two groups. When we focused on the brightness and gloss of the skin appearance, we confirmed that fine fiber membrane combination group was able to change this appearance significantly and earlier better on even the third day.

Body Makeup ResearchIn the U.S., we are investigating Fine Fiber technology and its unique application as a body makeup. We have

developed a special device allowing us to apply Fine Fiber on a larger area, and we are collaborating with makeup artists and aestheticians to advance their application techniques and to create various value proposals.

For example, many professional makeup artists in the U.S. work for the entertainment industry, such as TV and/or movie industries, as well as for celebrity clients. Indeed, the entertainment/celebrity environment is often where new makeup application techniques and the latest trends emerge. On the other hand, some aestheticians are focused on natural and beautiful skin and are looking to more convenient and attractive technical proposals to meet their clients’ needs.

Kao researchers in the U.S. have been collaborating with these beauty professionals to create and popularize a new concept in body makeup by combining Fine Fiber technology with makeup products currently on the market. Utilizing a special prototype device developed for beauty professionals to provide a flexible and uniform film on skin, we will help top makeup artists and aestheticians create a beautiful and comfortable body appear-ance for their clients that lasts all day.
