WELCOME TO OUR RHÔNE VALLEY OFFER!

With all the recent hype surrounding the 2009 and 2010 vintage in Bordeaux particularly but also Burgundy, the Rhône Valley has been left somewhat in the shadows, but not for any longer; we have gathered all of our Rhône Valley producers, the recent releases and some older vintages that have been nestled away maturing in our cel-lars. The overriding factor that screamed off the page as I wrote this is the incredible value the wines of the Rhône Valley still deliver. There are a myriad of vintages in this offer, including the 2009 and 2010 arrivals from these top producers; both exceptional vintages in the Rhône, as they were in other parts of France. The 2009 vintage wines are wonderfully opulent, forward, expressive wines; for me they tend to express the vintage rather than their particular part of the world. The 2010 vintage is all about balance, there’s great fruit, acidity, structure and a clear sense of place. Whilst both vintages will age gracefully, the 2010 wines are a better longer term proposition, the 2009 wines are already delicious now. The international media’s views on the two vintages offer high praise for both vintages:

“While the ‘09s are generous and rich, often to a fault, the 2010s display a stunning combination of freshness, richness and structure, the traits necessary for long aging. It’s the rare 2009 that will outlive its 2010 sibling, I believe. The southern Rhône’s winning streak continued through the generally outstanding 2010 vintage, with some estates having produced the best wines I’ve yet tasted from them. According to Christophe Sabon of Domaine de la Janasse, “balance is the word for 2010. Okay, maybe it’s really two words: balance and freshness.” He went on: “The acidity levels are high in the ‘10s but the fruit is ripe, almost like 2007 or even 2003 in some cases. But there’s no roasted character. When those two elements are in harmony the wines are classic, classic Châteauneuf.” Stephen Tanzer

“But, having already started my tastings of the 2010 vintage in Burgundy and the Rhône, I must urge those of you who like wines from these two great French wine regions to try to put a bit of money aside (ha!) to invest in the 2010s from them. After the unusually ripe, relatively low acid wines made in 2009, the 2010s typically show considerably more precision and fresh-ness, and more supple tannins in the case of the southern Rhône.” Jancis Robinson

“I place 2010 in the top three of my 20 years covering the Rhône alongside the 1978 and 1990.” John Livingstone-Learmonth

To accompany this offer, we have put together a series of tastings in Auckland and Wellington around these wines through June and early July. I hope to see you at one of these events and trust you’ll enjoy exploring the wonders the Rhône has to offer as much I have in putting this together.

UNDERSTANDING THE RHÔNE VALLEY

The Rhône Valley is a historic wine region, grapes were grown in the northern part of the valley in the fi rst cen-tury AD. In the 14th Century the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon, with their holiday residence in Châteauneuf-du-Pape; today the bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape still wear the papal signature in various ways. The Pope’s were great lovers of wines and planted vineyards around the city. Situated in south eastern France, just south of Burgundy, the Rhône wine region is 250km long, with 250 communes, starting around Avignon in the south and fi nishing at Lyon – France’s second largest city. Whilst often lumped together, the appellations of the Rhône are spread out over this vast wine growing region and produce a wide variety of styles from numerous grape varieties. Climatically it is a hot region, with abundant sunshine hours suiting grape varieties that like the warmth. There are four different types of rock that make up the unique soils of the Rhône Valley; granite, sandy silica, limestone and clay. The rocks signifi cantly retain the intense summer heat during both day and night, perfect for ripening.

The Rhône wine growing region is broken into two distinct parts, the North and the South; the majority of wines produced across both are red, with small percentages of white and Rosé. In 1933 Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the fi rst of the Rhône regions to be awarded the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée status; today there are 19 AOC in the Rhône, including some relative new comers: in 2010 the still red wines from Rasteau were granted an AOC, and in 2006 Vinsobres was awarded the AOC status. The quality levels in the Rhône Valley are a little easier to understand than some of the neighbouring French regions; wine produced in one of the AOC villages areas is labelled under that village, outside that wines are either generic table wine, or Côtes du Rhône and then a step up to Côtes du Rhône Villages.

THE APPELLATIONS IN THE NORTHERN RHÔNE:

CONDRIEU: Home to the opulent variety Viognier (the only variety permitted here under the AOC), where the white wines produced are rich and luscious with aromas of apricot kernel and stoned fruit. The best examples are exceptional, one of the top producers in the region is Yves Cuilleron.

CORNAS: The only variety permitted here is Syrah; this is an appellation that offers some of the top fi ne wines in the world, for considerably less than their comparable counterparts elsewhere. The wines are densely structured powerful wines; black fruits, leather and an incredible will to just keep on giving.

CÔTE-RÔTIE: The fragrant beautiful reds of the northern Rhône; the varieties permitted here are Syrah and Viognier (which can make up to 20% of the blend), although in recent vintages the amount used is declining with many producers now making 100% Syrah. Fragrant, forward, fruit driven wines that are deceptively powerful.

CROZES-HERMITAGE: The majority of Crozes-Hermitage are red wines made from Syrah; there are small amounts of white produced from Marsanne and Roussanne. Geographically the Crozes-Hermitage AOC is diverse; when found, the best examples are excellent value and mature earlier than the other appellations of the northern Rhône.

HERMITAGE: Based around the Hermitage hill, there’s Syrah, Marsanne and some Roussanne planted in this appellation. Characteristically the red wines are big, bold styles, full of ripe fruit characters, strong tannin structure, black pepper and spice.

SAINT-JOSEPH: The early drinking appellation in the northern Rhône; the whites are in the minority and are generally made from Marsanne and Roussanne, the reds from Syrah. Both red and white Saint-Joseph are fruit driven, fragrant, more gentle styles best to drink in the short term.

SAINT-PERAY: One of the smallest appellations in the northern Rhône, Saint-Peray is a white wine appellation producing both still and sparkling white wines.

CHÂTEAU-GRILLET: A tiny appellation consisting of 3.5ha on the right side of the Rhône river; there’s only Viognier produced here and only by one producer. A very unique appellation, grapes have been grown here since Roman times and from 1936 it was an AOC.

THE APPELLATIONS IN THE SOUTHERN RHÔNE:

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE: The charming superstar of the southern Rhône; here there are 13 permitted varieties although only three producers, including Beaucastel and Mont-Redon, that grow all 13 varieties. Of all of the appellations, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is very hard to make gen-eralisations about, the styles produced are wide ranging and there are 8100 hectares currently under vine. There are Châteauneuf-du-Papes that are excellent young and serious long lived wines produced here; in this appellation, perhaps more than the others, knowing the producers style and identifying the one that suits your taste is key.

GIGONDAS: This is a predominantly red appellation, with the main varieties being Grenache, Syrah, Mourvè-dre and Cinsault. The wines produced here are strong, robust wines with chewy tannins and a rich fruity character; they are generous and rounded.

LIRAC: Often referred to as the Rosé producing appellation in the south; whilst Rosé is produced there, the majority of production is red wine made from a mix of grape varieties. In New Zealand we generally only see Rosé Lirac.

TAVEL: An appellation solely reserved for Rosé production; there are nine varieties that can be used to make Tavel including Grenache and Cinsault.

VACQUEYRAS: A sleeping superstar that is starting to wake, this appellation in recent years has started to produce some wines of exceptional quality and nicely enough without the massive jumps in price. The majority of this appellation is red wine, with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre dominating the landscape. The wines are fruity, forward wines, plenty of dried herbs and spice; generally there’s a strong acid backbone that adds lift to the wines.

BEAUMES DE VENISE: Whilst Côtes du Rhône Villages in Beaumes de Venise are produced in an appellation in their own right, the highlight of this appellation is the fortifi ed wines made from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains which is only permitted in this appellation in the southern Rhône and fall under the Muscat Beaumes de Venise AOC.

VINSOBRES: The newest addition to the appellations in the Rhône, producing red wines from Grenache and Syrah that are distinctly fresh and fl eshy.

RASTEAU: This appellation has recently had its red wines recognised as an AOC, a classifi cation that it already held for the fortifi ed red wines produced here from Grenache. The still red wines, in the newest part of the appella-tion, are made predominantly from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

GADAGNE: An appellation on the outskirts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape where red wines are produced predomi-nantly from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

DOMAINE BOSQUET DES PAPES

Bosquet des Papes was started by the Boiron family in 1860. Over the years they have purchased many small parcels of land and now have 43 different parcels in the appellation. Within the total 27 ha, 3.5 ha is 100 year old vines whilst the average age of the total planted area is 50 years. The 100 year old vines are used to produce Cuvée Chante le Merle. The style of Bosquet des Papes is characterised as rustic, traditional and complex. The winemaking is meticulous, producing rich, full distinctive Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

“I have been following the wines of this estate since 1978, when the parents of Nicolas Boiron produced the wines. Nicolas, one of the tallest vignerons in the village, has been in charge for a number of years, and has unquestionably hit pay dirt over recent vintages. While many top-notch wines have emerged from Bosquet des Papes over the last 25 years, I do not think they have ever had a greater vintage than 2010, which has been followed by some of the fi nest wines of the vintage in 2011. Consumers should be looking out for this domaine’s wines as the quality has soared even higher than it already was. In 34 years of tastings, every time I go back to a wine region I seemingly know extremely well, there are always surprises, both wonderful and disappointing. My re-cent tasting at Bosquet des Papes ranks as the most remarkable I conducted on my trip to the southern Rhône Valley. For starters, two sleepers of the vintage are the 2011 and 2010 Côtes du Rhônes. The Boirons own nearly ten acres of Côtes du Rhône vineyards situated on the other side of Domaine du Marcoux in the northern part of the appellation. Their vines are separated from the Châ-teauneuf-du-Pape appellation by a narrow two-lane road. Both Côtes du Rhônes are blends of 80% Grenache, 10% Cinsault and 10% Syrah aged in tank. Bosquet des Papes’s 2011 Châteauneuf-du-Papes are among the great successes of the vintage.“ Parker

BOSQUET DES PAPES LA GLOIRE DE MON GRAND PERE 2010 RETAIL $125 OFFER $94.99

98/100 “A 100% Grenache cuvee from the Gardiole lieu-dit is the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape a la Gloire de Mon Grand-pere. With 43 separate parcels spread throughout the appellation, the Boiron family can pick and choose the best, but it must be a strategic nightmare to manage all these different parcels. This 2010 (500 cases produced) includes 50% stems and is aged entirely in demi-muids. Close to perfection, it is the fi nest example of this cuvee I have tasted since its debut in 1998. Drinking it is like drinking pure kirsch liqueur intermixed with notes of crushed spring fl owers. Its superb minerality, density, purity and texture build incrementally in the mouth revealing a blockbuster red with superb elegance, precision and purity. The alcohol must surpass 15%. Drink this spectacular Châteauneuf-du-Pape over the next 12-15 years.” Parker

BOSQUET DES PAPES LA GLOIRE DE MON GRAND PERE 2009 RETAIL $100 OFFER $79.99

91/100 “Readers looking for a seductive fi x made from mostly Grenache (98% ) and the rest Cinsault and Clairette (be-cause it’s a fi eld blend) should check out the 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape A La Gloire de Mon Grandpere. Produced from 70- to 100-year vines, this is a decadent Grenache with huge amounts of opulent kirsch liqueur notes, a lusty, full-bodied mouthfeel, plenty of glycerin and, I am sure, 15+% alcohol.” Parker

Eighty percent Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre from 92+ year-old vines, this wine is delicious already, and should continue to evolve for another 10-12 years.” Parker

“This is the Côtes du Rhône of Bosquet des Papes that up until quite recently was labelled Bosquet de Pape Côte du Rhône; as it is not allowed to have ‘pape’ in the name of a Côtes du Rhône, the labelling change was required. From the excel-lent 2010 vintage, a superb wine.” LW

DOMAINE YVES CUILLERON

Located in the northern Rhône, Yves is one of the three winemakers behind the Negociant business Les Vins de Vi-enne. Yves, a Condrieu specialist, knows how to make Viognier sing. The wines come in threes, which does make our list of wines from Yves quite generous; three Saint-Joseph Blanc, three Côte-Rôtie, three Condrieu and so on. Yves could of course blend the three parcels (of Côte-Rôtie for example) together, but rather bottles them individually to maintain the individuality of each parcel. Discussing this with him, he explained that he is not content with a single expression blended from his various sites, preferring to explore the individual characters of each site and present them in isolation. Tasting the three expressions side by side, it is hard to imagine them blended together, each is such a wonderful expres-sion. The wines from Domaine Yves Cuilleron are simply stunning, with the top wines sold out from the estate each year. In this offer you’ll also fi nd a collection of the Vin de Pays wines from Yves that we added to the range recently.

CONDRIEU VERTIGE

Made from a single parcel in a south facing amphitheatre; the name is inspired by vertigo, refl ecting the steepness of this site, the soils are rich granite. Aged for 18 months in oak, this is a wine to cellar; it is all about texture, balance and length.

YVES CUILLERON CONDRIEU VERTIGE 2010 RETAIL $170 OFFER $125

DOMAINE YVES CUILLERON

Alongside his impressive Condrieu, Yves also makes excellent Côte-Rôtie. There’s currently a total of 6ha of Côte-Rôtie planted, with 2ha more to plant. The parcels that make up this holding are located in 7 different spots mainly in the northern part of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Three distinct styles are produced;

CÔTE-RÔTIE BASSENON: This has a percentage of Viognier (the 2009 has 10%), which is co fermented; it’s from the south of Côte-Rôtie and is an elegant, lifted aromatic style of Côte-Rôtie. 18 months in 50% new oak.

CÔTE-RÔTIE LA MADINIÈRE: From the northern hill of the Ampuis commune, no Viognier; a lush forward wine, it’s all about spice and velvety texture, with well poised tannins to lift the fi nish.

CÔTE-RÔTIE TERRES SOMBRES: There’s no Viognier in this Côte-Rôtie which, whilst it makes the wine stylistically different, is actually because Yves does not have any planted in this vineyard. From the northern part of Côte-Rôtie in the municipality of Ampuis, this is the most powerful style in the range of Côte-Rôtie, whilst maintain-ing a focus on fruit purity.

VIN DE PAYS

We have always bought in small amounts of Yves Cuilleron’s Vin de Pays; from the 2010 vintage onwards we have secured slightly more in order to be able to offer these widely. The Viognier is made from fruit grown in the com-mune of Chavanay and is aged for 6 months in tank and oak, retaining a wonderful freshness and a huge varietal note. The Roussanne is from Chavanay and St Michel sur Rhône; the ageing is similar to the Viognier, it has incred-ible balance and freshness. The Marsanne has a wonderful spiciness and is very clean and fresh.

DOMAINE RENÉ ROSTAING

René Rostaing is the King of Côte-Rôtie. He started in 1971 with a small vineyard of 0.47ha in the northern Rhône appellation of Côte-Rôtie. His vineyard was split between two parts of the Côte-Rôtie: Côte Blonde and La Landonne. From small beginnings he has increased his vineyard holdings to 6ha of Côte-Rôtie, including many sites with very old vines. He also produces a small amount of Condrieu. Without doubt a superstar of the northern Rhône.

RENÉ ROSTAING CÔTE-RÔTIE AMPODIUM 2010 RETAIL $137 OFFER $99

94/100 “The 2010 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium is performing much better from bottle than it did last year. Fashioned from a dozen separate terroirs in Côte-Rôtie, it exhibits tell-tale notes of licorice, tapenade, black currants and black raspberries with a fl oral component in the background. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, rich and opulent, this superb Côte-Rôtie can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years.” Parker

Concen-trated but not at all heavy; bright raspberry and blackberry fl avours are lifted by a hint of violet. DOMAINE PAUL JABOULET AÎNÉ

There’s been much change at Jaboulet in recent times and all of it for the better. Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been sold to the Frey Family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part owners of Billecart-Salmon in Champagne. Jaboulet has long been one of the top producers in the northern Rhône; the changes in ownership have resulted in a change in direction which has enabled Jaboulet to regain the glory of the past.

Earlier this year we conducted a tasting with Trinity Hill Homage alongside Jaboulet La Chapelle, (which the Trinity Hill wine is a Hom-

age to), tasting back through many of the vintages featured here. The tasting highlighted the new quality at Jaboulet and in particular the change in direction from the 2005 vintage.

JABOULET LA CHAPELLE HERMITAGE 2010 RETAIL $395 OFFER $325

96/100 “Inky, glass-staining ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes dark fruit liqueur, smoky Indian spices, potpourri and cracked pepper. Deep but lively, offering palate-coating blueberry and cherry-cola fl avours and a sexy note of candied violet. This wine opens up dramatically with a little air and shows a very suave blend of power and fi nesse. An energizing mineral note comes on strong on the endless fi nish, which features sexy fl oral and spicecake nuances.” Tanzer

Displays serious power on the fi nish, which echoes the cherry note.” Tanzer

Bright and racy on entry, then fl eshier and richer in the mid-palate, with a smoky note emerging with aeration. Silky, harmonious tannins frame the long, sweet, incisive fi nish. Quite elegant, even polished, with plenty of surprisingly immediate appeal.” Tanzer

DOMAINE E. GUIGAL

Located in Ampuis in the northern Rhône, Guigal are one of the region’s top producers with a wide range of wines made; from Côtes du Rhône to dazzling Côte-Rôtie and many smart wines in between. Their practices are organic, focus on low yields, a love affair with old vines and late harvest dates. Gui-gal Côte-Rôtie are always very sought after and difficult to procure; highlighted by the 2009 vintage, which is due shortly and has already gleaned 100 points.

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2009 RETAIL $599 OFFER $525

100/100 “The 2009 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is a killer wine. An extravagant bouquet of black truff les, roasted meats, licorice, ground pepper, blackberries, scorched earth and camphor soars from this muscular, dense, over-the-top, serious, masculine La Landonne. Built like Arnold Schwarzenegger was two decades ago, this enormous-ly concentrated bodybuilder of a wine should hit its prime in a decade, and last 40-50 years. This is no trivial boast as the debut vintage of La Landonne, the 1978, is just reaching full maturity at age 34.” Parker

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2008 (90/100 PARKER) RETAIL $540 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2006 (97/100 PARKER) RETAIL $599 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA MOULINE 2009 RETAIL $599 OFFER $525

100/100 “The 2009 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline possesses off-the-charts richness. Like all the vintages, it comes from the Côte Blonde and is co-fermented with 11% Viognier. Its 13.5% alcohol is one of the highest in all the La Moulines made to date, which shows you that these wines are never that powerful. Extraordinary layers of con-centration offer up notes of roasted coffee, sweet black cherries, black raspberries, blackberries, licorice and hints of spring f lowers as well as lychee nuts (no doubt attributable to the f loral/honeysuckle character of Viognier). With its full-bodied, extravagant richness, the 2009 La Mouline should be relatively approachable in 1-2 years, and last for two decades or more.” Parker

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA MOULINE 2008 (89/100 PARKER) RETAIL $540 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA MOULINE 2006 (94/100 PARKER) RETAIL $599 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA MOULINE 2004 (94/100 PARKER) RETAIL $540 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA TURQUE 2009 RETAIL $599 OFFER $525

100/100 “Another perfect wine is the 2009 Côte-Rôtie La Turque. It possesses a slightly denser purple colour than the opaque Côte-Rôtie La Mouline as well as notes of Asian spices, roasted meats, bouquet garni, spring f lowers, camphor and truff les. It is a different expression of Syrah as this comes from the more iron-laden soils of the Côte Brune. Although never as aromatic, precocious or enjoyable as La Mouline is in its youth, La Turque is, nevertheless, a remarkably concentrated, profound wine that is built like a skyscraper. It possesses a level of intensity and richness that must be tasted to be believed. Despite the f lamboyant personality of the vintage, the 2009 will require 4-5 years of cellaring and should age effortlessly for 25-30 years.” Parker

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA TURQUE 2008 (89/100 PARKER) RETAIL $540 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA TURQUE 2006 (93/100 PARKER) RETAIL $599 OFFER $465

GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE CHÂTEAU D’AMPUIS 2005 RETAIL $262 OFFER $225

94-96/100 “If the 2006 represents a 1991-ish feminine offering, the 2005 Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis is a ma-cho, masculine-styled effort. Dense, concentrated, and powerful, with gamy black currant, spice box, bacon fat, and herb notes, this chewy, tannic, enormously promising requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following two decades or more.” Parker

GUIGAL EX VOTO HERMITAGE 2006 RETAIL $599 OFFER $489

95+/100 “The opaque purple-coloured 2006 Hermitage Ex-Voto reveals notes of black fruits, graphite, ink and acacia f lowers along with fabulous intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, good acidity and high, but sweet tannins that caress the palate. Despite having spent 42 months in barrel, it remains a youthful wine that should age ef-fortlessly for 30+ years.” Parker

GUIGAL EX VOTO HERMITAGE 2005 (95-98/100 PARKER) RETAIL $599 OFFER $489

GUIGAL SAINT-JOSEPH VIGNES DE L’HOSPICE 2007 (93/100 PARKER) RETAIL $168 OFFER $135

LES VINS DE VIENNE: IN THE NORTHERN RHÔNE

Les Vins de Vienne is a Negociant operation started in February 1996 by Pierre Gaillard, François Villard and Yves Cuilleron; the wines of Les Vins de Vienne combine not only the skill of these three very talented winemakers, but also the access to top quality material to produce an outstanding (albeit extensive) range.

THE WINES OF SEYSSUEL: AN ANCIENT VINEYARD GIVEN NEW LIFE

Pierre Gaillard was the fi rst of the three to come to the area of Vienne; his readings of historic writers led him to the Seyssuel vineyard where wine was highly regarded through the Roman era, the Middle Ages, and the 19th Century. Historically there were three wines made within the area of Vienne and from the Seyssuel vineyard; Heluicum, So-tanum and Taburnum. Phylloxera destroyed the vineyard and it was not until 1996 that they were cultivated by this talented trio who once again produce the three wines from the Seyssuel vineyard.

DOMAINE MONT-REDON

Château Mont-Redon, established in 1344, is one of the oldest wine-producing estates in France and is also the largest single property in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Estate includes 100 hectares of the most perfectly-sited vineyards in this appellation. Their rules? What they call “ancient know-how”: a manual selection at the harvest to ensure that only perfect grapes are used; a balanced blend of numerous grape varieties to high-light the aromatic complexity of the wines; a long mac-

eration to obtain the required depth and structure; fi nally, a refi ned barrel ageing. And now a new guard; the four pictured above represent the future of Mont-Redon, a combined family company (the Abeille and Fabre families; the two older generations are cousins) is slowly being handed down to the new generation. The old team are not standing still whilst handing on the estate, with a huge focus on new innovation including a brand new winery and optical sorter. Quality right now and a very promising future - one to keep a close eye on.

DOMAINE AUGUSTE CLAPE

A benchmark producer of Cornas, at 86 years old, Auguste Clape is one of the few remaining old heroes of French winemaking; an icon whose name is synonymous with some of the best wines in the Rhône, and some say the world. The King of Cornas, both because his wines are widely considered to be the best from this tiny appellation and be-cause he has sometimes single-handedly fought to maintain its integrity and recognition over the years.

“The master of Cornas, this estate continues to fashion a beautiful array of wines. With his son, Pierre-Marie, in charge, Auguste Clape enjoys a well-deserved retirement. In addition to outstanding Cornas, Clape also produces a very good Côtes du Rhône and Vin de Pays, both made from fruit grown just outside the Cornas appellation. 2007 is a slightly lighter vintage in Cornas than 2006, but the sweetness of the tannins, and the precociousness of the wines make the 2007 Cornas much more approachable than usual.” Parker

DOMAINE AUGUSTE CLAPE CORNAS 2006 RETAIL $180 OFFER $155

93/100 “Clape’s 2006 Cornas reveals notions of scorched earth, smoked meats, blackberries, camphor, fi gs, cassis, and licorice. It is full-bodied with macho power as well as serious depth. This concentrated yet surprisingly velvety-textured wine should be cellared for 1-2 years, and consumed over the following two decades. It appears that Pierre-Marie Clape is getting more tannic sweetness than his father did.” Parker

DOMAINE AUGUSTE CLAPE CORNAS 2007 RETAIL $210 OFFER $165

90/92 ”A bigger wine, the 2007 Cornas exhibits notes of scorched earth, new saddle leather, blackberries, cassis, fi gs, and tobacco leaf. Luscious by Clape’s standards, it should age nicely for 15 years.” Parker

DOMAINE PIERRE GAILLARD

Pierre Gaillard started in the wine business at a very young age with Chardonnay vines from his parents garden. After working for both Guigal and Vidal Fleury he went out on his own and started with a Saint-Joseph red. Since then he has expanded and now has vineyards in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. Pierre Gaillard is well recognised as one of the nothern Rhône’s best vintners. Pierre’s hallmark is his ability to choose the best parcels and various barrels, blending them together into very harmonious wines.

SAINT-JOSEPH

Pierre Gaillard makes three styles of Saint-Joseph, starting with the AOP, which is produced from fruit grown in Chavanay and Malleval. Clos de Cuminaille is the next level up, Syrah off a 3ha block in Chavanay aged for 18 months in oak. Les Pierres comes off 1.5 selected hectares, 18 months in new oak after which only the best 25% of the barrels are chosen to make Les Pierres.

VIGNERONS DE CARACTÈRE

Vignerons de Caractère are a cooperative specializing in the southern Rhône and are a new addition to our range. We have had a preference in the past to work directly with Domaines, however when we tasted the quality here, our views on cooperatives were changed. This is a collective of 80 families who have been working together for 50 years, between them looking after 1000 hectares. The collective has passed through the generations; whilst there are many sig-nifi cant points to note, one key fact is that all of the families livelihoods come from grape growing and winemaking.

“If you’re looking for a solid way to introduce yourself to the wines of the southern Rhône, it’s hard to beat the price-to-quality ratio that Vignerons de Caractère is currently delivering.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, August 2010

“This is a well-run large cooperative in Vacqueyras that admirably displays the talent involved. I tasted a dozen separate cuvees from this operation and six of them were potentially outstanding. The (...) wines should change the mind of anyone with an an-ticooperative prejudice.” Robert Parker, November 2010

VIGNERONS DE CARACTÈRE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE ROUGE 2010 RETAIL $76 OFFER $59

92/100 “Dark and brawny, offering a nice briary frame and lots of grippy pebble, tar, tobacco and black currant notes. Fleshier on the back end, with plum, blackberry and a streak of tobacco. Very terroir-driven, showing fi ne acidity. Best from 2014 through 2028. 1,200 cases made.” JM, Wine Spectator

VIGNERONS DE CARACTÈRE ELOQUENCE GIGONDAS 2009 RETAIL $76 OFFER $59

90-92 “Inky purple. Pungent aromas of dark berries, cherry-cola and tobacco, with an exotic note of apricot in the background. Smooth and velvety in texture, with deep blackberry and cassis fl avours perked up by a late note of cracked pepper. Lively, mineral-accented dark fruit and fl oral notes linger on the long, sappy fi nish.” Tanzer

VIGNERONS DE CARACTÈRE VACQUEYRAS ÉTERNITÉ 2010 RETAIL $70 OFFER $49

90/100 “Bright purple. Heady bouquet evokes candied dark fruits and fresh fl owers, with an exotic apricot note gaining power with air. Juicy, penetrating and nicely concentrated, offering sappy blueberry and fl oral pastille fl avours and a kick of peppery spices. Finishes smooth and broad, with very good energy and a lingering violet note.” Tanzer

DOMAINE LE COLOMBIER

Located in Vacqueyras, Domaine le Colombier was established in 1963 by the current owner’s father and grandfa-ther. Jean-Louis Mourre has been at the helm since 1996 and takes good care of some of the oldest vines (planted in 1902) in the appellation. A Vacqueyras specialist, the quality here has sky rocketed in recent years, yet the wines remain affordable.

DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE

Widely recognised as one of the best producers of Hermitage, the Chave family have been growing grapes in Hermitage since 1481. Whilst they are based in a village not far from Cornas, the basis of the operation is the hill of Hermitage where they own vines in nine of the eighteen vineyards that cover the Hermitage hill. The most signifi -cant holding is a 2ha plot in Les Bessards, a vineyard on the western end of the hill with granite soils.

DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE BLANC 2009 RETAIL $450 OFFER $360

99/100 “The bottled 2009 Hermitage Blanc is one of the greatest whites ever made chez Chave, and that’s saying something given Chave’s track record. This spectacular wine, normally a blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, exhibits layers of concen-tration, superb acidity and minerality, laser-like focus, and plenty of quince, white currant, citrus oil, honeysuckle, anise, white peach and apricot marmalade notes. This signifi cant, full-bodied, dry white Hermitage should age for 30-50 years. However, given the vintage’s fl amboyance, it will be drinkable early in life. Drink 2011-2061.” Parker

DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE ROUGE 2009 RETAIL $525 OFFER $389

100 /100 “The greatest wines Chave has produced since 2003 are the two cuvees of 2009 Hermitage. The 2009 Hermitage exhibits a black/purple colour along with a sumptuous nose of roasted meats, ground pepper, black currants, blackberry jam, and subtle smoke and licorice. The extraordinary bouquet is followed by a wine of extravagant intensity as well as tremendous focus and precision. While not as powerful as the blockbuster 2003, the amazing 2009 may turn out to be a modern day version of their magnifi cent 1990 (which is drinking incredibly well at present). Anyone who loves Hermitage and has a cold cellar should be lining up to get a few bottles of this beauty. Drink 2021-2071.” Parker

CHÂTEAU BEAUCASTEL

One of the oldest and greatest producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Beaucastel wines are remarkably long lived wines with a distinctive character, farmed organically; whilst being renowned as one of the best, their blend is atypical. Along with Mont Redon and Domaine de Nalys, Beaucastel is one of three producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has all 13 of the permitted grape varieties planted; their blend is unusually high in Mourvèdre. Run today by Jean-Pierre Perrin and Francois Perrin, they both learnt their craft from their father, the late Jacques Perrin, and have carried on his exacting standards whilst further enhancing the style.

CHÂTEAU BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2009 RETAIL $205 OFFER $164

Perfumed, expressive aromas of red and dark berry preserves, smoky herbs and lavender, with a touch of licorice adding depth. Fleshy and supple in texture, offering intense black raspberry and bitter cherry fl avours lifted by a spicy quality. Shows the richness of the vintage but carries no excess fat. The fi nish lingers with impressive tenacity and echoes the fl oral and smoke notes.” Tanzer

CHÂTEAU RAYAS

Château Rayas are an iconic and enigmatic Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer. No stainless steel, no temperature controls, no new oak, only Grenache is used from a very late harvest, and both yields and production are ridiculously low. There are two Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced on the ten-hectare vine-yard; Rayas and Pignan. Pignan is often overlooked, made from a 2 ha lieu-dit of the same name plant-ed in the late 80s. These are all substantial and exotically rich wines that are quite literally unique. Château de Fonsalette is the most famous of all Côtes du Rhône; from a vineyard outside the appella-tion but is vinified at Rayas, and is better than most producers Châteauneuf. Château des Tours is a separate top quality estate also owned by the Raynaud family.

PROVENANCE: PEACE OF MIND

There has been much written in the press about the conditions for transporting the wines from Europe to their fi nal destination. We take extra time in coordinating our shipping to ensure that the conditions are optimal. As with all of our fi ne wines arriving from overseas, they are transported in refrigerated containers to New Zealand; we also collect our stock from the wineries in temperature controlled vehicles. All of this does increase the freight costs slightly, but gives you peace of mind as to the condition of the wines when they arrive.

Shipping is of course only one part of the process, it is equally important that the wine is stored correctly when it arrives in New Zealand, particularly wine for long term cellaring. Once our containers arrive at our warehouse, we have a large temperature controlled storage container that our fi ne wines move into. This has monitored temperature control and the ranges over the last six months, for reference, are detailed below.
