NEWSPAPERS
Newspapers are the oldest and,
generally, the most trusted
source of news. Newspapers
employ the most reporters of
any of the media and provide
the most in-depth coverage.
DAILY NEWSPAPERS
Most cities over 25,000 in
population have a daily
newspaper. Most dailies
are “morning papers,” whose
primary coverage area is their
home town.
WEEKLYNEWSPAPERS
Smaller towns often have weekly
newspapers. They focus 100 percent on local
coverage and often do not subscribe to wire
service news.http://rrleader.com/
MONTHLYNEWSPAPERSMonthly papers are
often entertainment-
based papers. They are
normally distributed for
free and are supported
entirely by ad sales
revenue.
NEWSMAGAZINESTime Magazine is the last remaining news magazine in print. It has a circulation of 25 million. It provides an in-depth look at the major news stories of the week.
SPECIALTYMAGAZINESThere are countless specialty,
or specialized, magazines
that provide news to a
specific group of people: such
as computer users,
skateboarders, gardeners,
etc., etc.
NON-FICTIONBOOKSMore and more journalists and
writers are writing non-fiction books
about current events to provide an
incredibly in-depth look at the cause
and effect of a wide range of topics.
These take months of research and
100s of interviews.
THE BIG NETWORKSABC, NBC and CBS are the three top networks.
Fox has joined their ranks. The Big Three
networks focus primarily on entertainment, but
each has a news division that produces the
nightly news and a variety of news magazines
and special coverage of events. The broadcast
news tries to be fair and
impartial. Each of the major network
have 100s of local affiliates around the
country that provide local news broadcasts,
usually at 5 and 10 p.m.
CABLE NEWSIn the last 15 years cable news has become a
driving force in news coverage because they
are on the air 24/7. The big cable news
networks are FOX, MSNBC, and CNN. Cable
news is dominated talk shows and interview
formats that are often biased to one side or
another and oftentimes do not
present the news accurately.
FAKE NEWSThe “Fake News” popularized by Saturday Night
Live has found a home on Comedy Central with
the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert
Report with Stephen Colbert. Researchers
found that a lot of young people actually get
their news from these shows.
THE BBCThe venerated British Broadcasting
Corporation, which is usually known more
simply as the BBC, began on the radio years
ago and has since
moved to television and the
Internet. Based in England,
it is the world’s largest
broadcasting corporation
with 23,000 employees,
an annual budget of more
than $8 billion and hundreds
of reporters around the world.
PUBLIC BROADCASTINGIn the United Stated there is a publicly funded television network and a publicly funded radio network. Each provides extensive news coverage.
In addition to their nightly news, ABC,
NBC and CBS also have television news
magazines — half hour or hour long
broadcasts that either focus on one
subject with more depth, or three or
four segments. CBS’ 60 Minutes is
the granddaddy of television
news magazines.

NEWSPAPERS
All newspapers have web sites that
provide not only what is in their
printed versions, but much more in
terms of more news, more photos,
interactive features, video and
additional advertising revenue.
BROADCASTThe same is true for television networks
and local television news shows. In
addition to video, they also post written
news articles, archive material,
interactive
graphics, and
actually much,
much more
than what you
find on their
Television
newscasts.
ONLY ON THE WEBSalon.com and Slate.com are two of the
pioneering web-based publications. That
is to say they do not have a print
version, they are 100% on line. Some
newspapers have stopped printing and
moved to the web, such as The Christian
Science Monitor and the New Orleans
Times Picayune.

have reporters on staff to gather news,
but they provide articles and photos
from news services.
YOUTUBEYouTube, home to millions
of videos on everything from music
videos to people doing stupid stuff just
to get attention, is actually an incredibly
important venue for news. Video clips —
both from national news sources and
average people — provide real
information worldwide.
SOCIAL MEDIATwitter is a recent addition to the news
world where newsmakers, politicians
and celebrities Tweet their thoughts that
are then fodder for news articles.
Everyday citizens use Twitter to report
on what they see around them.
Facebook is also used by newsmakers to
post information, and people around the
world use Facebook to post information.
BLOGOSPHEREWeb logs, or Blogs, are relatively new to
the scene. Established journalists and
average people set up blogs to opine
about whatever their hearts desire.
Some blogs, such as www.dailykos.com
become influential and can actually
drive the news cycle.
PODCASTS& EMAIL ALERTSMost news sources provide Podcasts, where short clips can be
downloaded to your smartphone to view and share. This is just
one new example of how the availability of news over the
Internet is growing and taking advantage of new technologies.
Most major news sources also provide free e-mail alerts to your
computer or cell phone to keep you up-to-date on news you want
to follow.
