Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts

With the enchantment of the holidays upon us, I look forward to welcoming you to another exhilarating season at the Kravis Center, where world-class entertainment, arts education and local outreach combine to create something special for everyone in our community.

After celebrating our sensational silver anniversary last season, we are thrilled to mark another exciting milestone: 10 years of Kravis On Broadway. During the past decade, this remarkable series has featured more than 500 performances with ticket sales of nearly $60 million! We are pleased that these productions attract not only local Broadway fans but also guests from beyond Palm Beach County, boosting travel and tourism to our area. Kravis On Broadway continues with Finding Neverland, January 2-7; Cabaret, February 6-11; The Illusionists – Live From Broadway, March 6-11; The Bodyguard the Musical, April 10-15; and Something Rotten!, May 1-6.

Great White Way enthusiasts will not want to miss this season’s exquisite Gala “Night of Stars” – A Broadway Celebration performance and dinner dance on January 12. The black-tie affair will feature a red-carpet reception prior to a spectacular show in Dreyfoos Hall by a blockbuster lineup of Broadway

luminaries, including the legendary Angela Lansbury, who has won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards; Tony winners Chita Rivera and Brian Stokes Mitchell; MTV-acclaimed pop sensation Kate Davis and more. Dancing and a delicious dinner prepared by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center will follow in the Cohen Pavilion’s Gimelstob Ballroom. Tickets are $1,000 for Gala Patrons and $500 for Young Gala Patrons (45 and younger). For information, please visit kravis.org/gala or call 561.651.4320. For those interested in just the “Night of Stars” performance, tickets start at just $50 and can be purchased by calling the Kravis Center Box Office at 561.832.7469.

Our second fundraiser of the season, which also will be held in the elegantly decorated Gimelstob Ballroom, is the Palm Beach Wine Auction on February 1. This important event supports Kravis Center arts education programs, which range from Family Fare to the African-American Film Festival and from Lunch & Learn lectures to Kravis-on-the-Road programs for students. Last season more than 50,000 students attended S*T*A*R (Students and Teachers Arts Resource) Series performances during their school day, while nearly 4,000 adults participated in ArtSmart classes and lectures. We hope that you will consider requesting an invitation to this very special fundraiser that culminates in a five-course dinner and live auction. Tickets are $1,000. For details, please visit palmbeachwineauction.org or call 561.651.4320.

While continued monitoring of expenses by staff, innovative marketing campaigns and stellar programming are essential, the biggest factor in our ongoing success is your support. All of us at the Kravis Center are deeply grateful to the nearly 400,000 ticket holders who attended presentations last season and the 11,000-plus donors who made generous contributions. I also am pleased to announce that nearly 1,000 new donors became Kravis Center supporters, which will help us further our mission of offering exceptional entertainment and arts education opportunities to the entire community.

As our dynamic and diverse 2017-2018 season continues, I invite you to join us at performances including comedians Brad Garrett and Rita Rudner on January 9; German Cornejo’s Tango Fire on January 14; legendary vocalist Tony Bennett on February 5; renowned cantor Dudu Fisher on March 28; and famed ventriloquist Terry Fator on May 12. For tickets to all shows, including Kravis On Broadway productions, please visit our official website, kravis.org, or call the Box Office at 561.832.7469.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kravis On Broadway, I also salute the dedication of our 121 full-time employees, half of whom have been on staff for a decade or more. Their commitment, as well as your attendance and continued support, helps to make the Kravis Center one of the premier performing arts centers in the country. s

kravis on kravis

The Gimelstob Ballroom once again ushered in more than 300 Board Members, Life Trustees, community leaders, partners, group directors and media members during the highly anticipated Kravis On Kravis luncheon.

Guests enjoyed a delicious meal provided and served by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center when the master of ceremonies, Jill Switzer, took the stage. The multi-talented co-host of Legends 100.3 FM’s “Morning Lounge with Jill and Rich” soon had the audience clapping along with a fun rendition of Come to the Cabaret. Radio co-host Rich Switzer accompanied Jill on one of the two grand pianos gracing the stage.

Kravis Center CEO Judith Mitchell joined Jill to welcome everyone and introduce members of the Center’s Board, Life Trustees, sponsors and the Kravis Center’s Senior Director of Programming, Lee Bell. Guests were then treated to an exciting video highlighting the sensational season line up as well as a video that presaged the arrival of the event’s first guest, Ten Grands Executive Director, Kathy Fahlman Dewalt.

Dewalt shared the marvelous success of Ten Grands, which features ten of the most accomplished pianists in the world playing ten grand pianos on one stage. Ten Grands makes its debut at the Kravis Center on February 18 and Dewalt introduced two of the local performers, Dr. Jure Rozman and Catherine Lan who then gave Kravis On Kravis guests a sneak preview of multi-piano performances with short movements from Gabriel Faure’s Dolly Suite: Le jardin de Dolly and Le Pas Espagnol.

Next up was the announcement of the exciting collaboration between the Kravis Center and the Rinker Playhouse-based MNM Productions. Jill welcomed MNM Co-Founder Marcie Gorman-Althof to the stage to talk about the upcoming co-production of Little Shop of Horrors. The beloved musical takes the stage this December and stars Florida-based actors Mike Westrich and Mallory Newbrough. The two stars spoke about their Carbonell-winning roles with MNM Productions since its inception three years ago. Then, they wowed the

crowd with a powerhouse performance of the duet Suddenly Seymour.

Lee Bell then discussed the can’t-miss shows of the season that include the 10 year celebration of Kravis On Broadway. This year’s lineup kicked off with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King And I, and Kravis On Kravis guests were treated to an exciting appearance of Heather Botts, starring as Anna in the Broadway touring production. The delightful diva stunned the guests with an emotional, operatic performance of Hello Young Lovers.

Prizes were won, and laughter and applause abounded throughout the event that only hints at the excitement to come during the Kravis Center’s upcoming season. s

More than 575 volunteers and guests put on their finest cocktail and black-tie attire for the Kravis Center’s Volunteer Salute. The annual thank you dinner is known for its imaginative themes and fun surprises, and this year shined brightly with silver décor, a magic and mentalism show and a 25th Anniversary “Salute to Our Stars” theme. Awards were presented for Student Volunteer of the Year, Rookies of the Year, Ushers of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. There was also a special pin presentation to those who have been volunteering for 25 years or more.

“Over the past 25 years we have welcomed over 8,000 volunteers into our programs and we have had many funny, unusual and amazing moments to remember,” said Maureen Gardella, Director of Guest Services. “Tonight is all about our volunteers and we want to recognize and thank each of you for all you do. Your time and efforts are an invaluable part of what we do. Over the last 25 years, our volunteers have represented approximately $3 million in value to the Kravis Center. Our staff is proud of you and we thank you for your time, efforts and donations.”

Gardella then acknowledged Board Members in attendance, including founding Board Chairman Alexander Dreyfoos, current Board Chairman

Michael Bracci, past Board Chair and current Vice Chair Jane Mitchell, John Jenkins and Gary Lickle as well as CEO Judith Mitchell, CFO Kyle Ruge and COO Jim Mitchell.

With a mission to enhance the quality of life in Palm Beach County by presenting a diverse schedule of nation-al and international artists

and companies of the highest quality, it takes a diverse group of volunteers to keep the Kravis Center running smoothly.

Dreyfoos School of the Arts student, Ishbel Ayala, was awarded the Student Volunteer of the Year award by Education Assistant Miranda Hawkins. Ms. Ayala was recognized for her 80 plus hours of service. She has assisted teachers in the classroom, led group activities and helped with administrative tasks. “She is a role model for the students to look up to,” said Hawkins.

The Rookie of the Year award went to two outstanding volunteer ushers. The first Co-Rookie of the Year was awarded to an usher who has “from the beginning, excelled in the usher classes and on the usher test. This usher has been a quick learner and approached each assignment with enthusiasm. This being his first season, he has already worked 55 shows,” said Event Manager Karole Cooney when announcing recipient Ben Baxley.

volunteer who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the Kravis Center,” said Ms. Mitchell. “This year’s award goes to a volunteer who has been here since 1998 assisting us in numerous capacities. Extremely knowledgeable about the Kravis Center, this volunteer assists guests, answers questions, and does whatever is asked in a friendly, welcoming manner. Although quiet, this recipient stands out with a helpful and approachable demeanor and is proactive about helping guests.”

Special pins were presented to those Kravis Center volunteers who have been with the performing arts center the longest. Gardella noted that “this year I am pleased to announce that we have 27 volunteers who have been

here since the first season, 25 years ago, or before.” Those individuals who received pins included Rita Bjork, Lori and Bob Clinger, Phyllis and Bob Coleman, Louise D’Alia, Rosemary Diehl, Sandy and Irving Erekuff, Adele Espo, Sue Finestone, Betty Goldberg, Rosalyn Goldberg, Roberta Greenfield, Rita Greiner, Jerry Henin, Jane Holden, Phyllis Hopman, Evelyn

and Jim Louwers, Fran Maltzman, Ellen Migdal, Alexis Morrill, Serena Rinker, Norma Rosenfeld, Selma Rudnick-Waters and Rhoda Stopek.

Volunteers and their guests were treated to a very special dinner by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center featuring a delicious surf and turf. Ms. Mitchell led the guests in a champagne toast. For the dinner’s grand finale, decadent ice cream sundaes adorned with sparklers were paraded through the ballroom.

Guests enjoyed not only table-side magic and mentalism with Magic by Mio, but also a mesmerizing stage performance by Mio. The evening ended with dancing under the shining chandeliers to DJ Midnight Mike. Board Vice Chair Jane Mitchell sponsored the evening’s music, décor and entertainment. To inquire about volunteer opportunities, please visit the Center’s website kravis.org or call 561.651.4294. s

Former Event Manager D a l h i a P e r r y m a n acknowledged Mary Benbow as the second Co-Rookie of the Year. “She is a kind, dedicated team player with a great attitude. At every event she greets you with a beautiful, warm, welcoming smile. She is a phenomenal woman.”

Event Manager Paul Kaufman presented the Ushers of the Year award to Nancy and Bob Tschupp, noting that “dedication, loyalty, excellent customer service skills, a thorough knowledge of the entire campus and a never-ending willingness to help, are just some of the attributes that this year’s Ushers of the Year have shown.” In his remarks about the Tschupps, Kaufman said “they take much of the stress out of what can sometimes be very stressful situations.”

Kravis Center CEO Judith Mitchell presented the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award to Larry Dougher, who was a previous recipient of the Usher of the Year Award.

Approximately 73 students participated this summer in the De George Summer Launch, a week-long workshop for current and incoming elementary youth, providing a sampling of performing arts experience in theater, music, and dance with the opportunity to focus on specific interests. The students studied with professional arts educators as well as high school-level De George Academy students who shared their own experiences and mentored the younger students. The De George Academy is generously funded by the Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust.

During the 2016-17 school year, more than 160 students — five times that of the program’s first year — participated in the Academy’s afterschool

and weekend workshops. These workshops prepare Academy students for auditions for performing arts schools. They were nominated to attend by their teachers at area Title I elementary schools. The acceptance rate for De George Academy students at arts magnet schools is 64 percent, compared to only 21 percent for students not enrolled in the program.

This spring, the De George Residency will mark its fourth year, welcoming fifth through eighth grade students in a two-week artist res idency program. Under the guidance of teaching artists, students will create an original production which they will perform in Persson

Hall. s

WINE, CHEESE and WINNING!

On October 24, the Kravis Center welcomed 120 Palm Beach County school teachers for the fourth annual Educator Night, a fun and relaxed evening highlighting the Kravis Center’s 2017-2018 Season. The annual event gives teachers the chance to see how the arts can enhance their classroom efforts, while offering them exclusive ticket opportunities and treating them to live performances throughout the evening.

The Kravis Center will be offering the S*T*A*R (Students and Teachers Arts Resource) Series of presentations for young people during the 2017-2018 season, ranging from Dragons Love Tacos and Junie B. Jones to Hamlet. Teachers of all grade levels are encouraged to find productions to help support their classroom curricula and to provide complementary programming.

Teachers attending Educator Night were treated to exclusive ticket opportunities while socializing over wine and cheese and enjoying a performance by the Kravis Center’s and MNM Productions’ Little Shop of Horrors actors playing December 1-17 in the Rinker Playhouse. Performing were Mike Westrich as Seymour and Mallory Newbrough as Audrey. Teachers won prizes, including tickets to other Kravis On Broadway hit shows. The event was free of charge to all Palm Beach County educators and was hosted by Jill Switzer, co-host of The Morning Lounge with Jill and Rich on Legends 100.3, who also performed a song from Cabaret, accompanied by husband Rich Switzer on Piano.

For over 25 years, the Kravis Center has helped students of all ages fuel their imaginations and expand their lives through comprehensive arts education programs. Last season, nearly 60,000 children from Palm Beach, Broward, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties attended performances, presented in Dreyfoos Hall, through the S*T*A*R Series. The Center’s Admission Waiver Program ensures that no child is denied access to a performance based on ability to pay. s

CAPITALISTS AND COMMUNISTS, AMERICA IN RUSSIA PART II1933 TO 1999 – FDR AND STALIN TO CLINTON AND YELTSINLecturer: Dr. Stephen R. de AngelisThursday, March 29 at 1:30 pmAfter a 16-year hiatus in Russian-American relations, the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union cautiously reopened diplomatic presences in Washington and Moscow. Their common fear now was the rise of

German fascism. With communism ever spreading, bilateral fears resulted in a protracted Cold War between America and the Soviet Union.

Dr. Stephen R. de Angelis, who worked in business for 25 years before returning to Columbia University to earn his doctorate degree in Russian Studies through St. Petersburg University in Russia, will present a slide show along with his discussion. He has written 25 books, including the translations of the Diaries of Nicholas II.

Beyond the Stage welcomes Kravis Center guests to enjoy a bonus “show-before-the-show” experience through a series of pre-performance talks and presentations held each season at the Kravis Center to complement many of the dance and music performances. The in-depth talks, led by industry experts Steven Caras and Sharon McDaniel, delve into the stories behind the dancers’ and musicians’ performances, from the history of and inspiration for the choreography and compositions to personalities on stage that bring them to life.

Caras, a dancer with the New York City Ballet for 14 years, maintains an active schedule as a published author, featured lecturer, photographer, dance critic, guest ballet master and fundraiser. Along with Lee Wolf, he also hosts the hugely popular ArtSmart Lunch & Learn lecture series each season. McDaniel, an award-winning journalist and classical music critic, is the Regional Arts Concert Series Programming Associate for the Kravis Center and has been a Fellow at both the National Arts Journalism Program at Northwestern University and the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism.

Highlights for the 2017-18 season include free pre-performance talks for Finding Neverland on January 2; Cameron Carpenter on January 8; Tango Fire on January 14; Chicago on January 20; Cabaret on February 6; Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Rohan De Silva on February 26; the National Symphony of Cuba on March 12 and A Chorus Line on April 20.

broadway artists intensive

It’s never too early to start planning summer vacation fun! The Kravis Center is home to several popular summer theater arts programs that return for 2018 with exciting opportunities for students from throughout South Florida and beyond.

The Broadway Artists Intensive returns with two summer sessions. The Broadway Artists Intensive Junior will be held June 25-29, 2018. Taught by the same professional Broadway faculty as the more demanding, by-audition-only program, the Junior program allows students ages 9-13 to study all areas of the performing arts, with daily classes in ballet, jazz, tap, vocal technique, acting and improvisation. No audition is required.

The Broadway Artists Intensive, a three-week, advanced musical theater training program for ages 12-20, will be held July 9-28, 2018. This by-audition-only program features faculty comprised only of Broadway professionals from New York, offering the experience of more than 100 major musical productions. During the three-week program, students are immersed in the three major areas of the performing arts: acting, voice and dance.

Guest faculty for the 2017 session included Jon Rua from the original Broadway Cast of Hamilton, actress CJ Greer of Les Misérables, casting director Benton Whitley who cast Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 and Joshua Bergasse, choreographer of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Previous guest artists have included famed Director/Choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who has received multiple Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, TV star and Tony winner Christian Borle of NBC’s Smash and Tony-winning actress Annaleigh Ashford.

The program was created by Broadway professionals Jason Gillman, Jackie Bayne Gillman and Greg Graham.

For more information about The Broadway Artists Intensive, call the Kravis Center’s Education Department at 561.651.4251 or visit kravis.org/education-community. Additional information is also available by visiting www.thebroadwayartistsintensive.com. Room and board options are also available for students from outside of Palm Beach County who wish to attend The Broadway Artists Intensive. s

The Kravis Center is excited to announce its newest arts education program, the Kravis Center Dream Awards: Celebrating High School Musical Theater Excellence.

This new performing arts education initiative for high school students, being launched for the 2017-2018 school year and sponsored by PNC’s Arts Alive program, is open to all public and private high school students in Palm Beach County. During the yearlong program, Kravis Center theater adjudicators view and critique eligible musical theater productions at participating schools.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, student ensemble work and individual students’ accomplishments in musical theater performance will be recognized and honored at an exciting awards event in Dreyfoos Hall.

“We have always wanted to create a high school musical theater awards program here at the Kravis Center, so we’re thrilled that our Dream Awards are launching this season,” said Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO. “Our community has become the cultural capital of Florida, and these awards are a testament to the mission of the Kravis Center, as well as to the hard work by our local educators to make arts education a priority for our young people.”

At the Dream Awards event, two local student actors – one male and one female – will be selected to travel to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards. They will represent Palm Beach County while taking part in a week-long musical theater intensive. The culmination of the intensive will be the Jimmy Awards ceremony performance on a Broadway stage. s

Michael Feinstein’s Youth Ticketing Fund is a new program this season at the Kravis Center that provides students

from underserved communities the opportunity to experience an evening of live music featuring American classics performed by Michael Feinstein, featured performers and The Kravis Center Pops Orchestra.

Feinstein, a five-time Grammy Award nominated conductor, singer, songwriter and pianist known as the “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” has been entertaining audiences for more than 30 years in concerts around the world. He is a longtime supporter of the Kravis Center and conductor of its Pops Orchestra.

“Michael Feinstein is an American treasure, not only for his contributions to thepreservation and continued appreciation of the Great American Songbook, but for his passion for arts education,” said Lee Bell, Senior Director of Programming for the Kravis Center. “The Youth Ticketing Fund is a great example of his dedication and we are grateful he is bringing the program here for local students to enjoy one of his live performances along with our Pops Orchestra.”

The Youth Ticketing Fund covers the cost for local students to attend up to three performances scheduled this season: Michael Feinstein Conducts the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra: An Evening of Cole Porter on January 31, Michael Feinstein with the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra Big Band: Sinatra and Friends on February 28, or Michael Feinstein Conducts the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra: First Ladies of Song Including Judy, Peggy & Ella, with a Special 90th Birthday celebration for and starring Marilyn Maye, featuring Storm Large on March 13.

For more information about the Michael Feinstein Youth Ticketing Fund and how students from local schools can participate, please contact the Kravis Center’s Education Department at 561.651.4251 or kravis.org/education-community/.s

MUSIC “AT EIGHT” AND MUSIC “AT TWO” Series sponsored by Leonard and Sophie Davis

RegionalARTSConcert Series

The 2017/2018 season opened on November 4 with a blockbuster: The larger-than-life Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the finest orchestras on the world stage, in larger-than-life music – Richard Strauss’ A Hero’s Life (Ein Heldenleben). With the Orchestra’s esteemed Music Director for Life, Zubin Mehta, for whom the music of Strauss is a specialty, the performance was a true celebration for the audience.

Regional Arts also welcomed back the always-dynamic Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, led by its Music Director Pavel Kogan. As usual, the Moscow State’s inventive November 15 program brought to mind part of the saying “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” – Russian style! The “old” was the beloved Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto, in a dazzling performance by 29-year-old pianist Dmitry Masleev – appropriately, the Gold Medal Winner of the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition (2015). The “new” was the Regional Arts premiere of The Rock, a powerful and atmospheric work by a then-budding young composer – named Sergei Rachmaninoff.

“Gold Medal” season continues with pianist Vadym Kholodenko, First Prize winner of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, who will make his recital debut at Kravis on December 4. Moreover, the Competition’s 2017 Gold Medalist, Yekwon Sunwoo, will give a debut performance on March 12 as piano soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. In addition, yes, there is even a third Cliburn Medalist: Pianist Kenneth Broberg, the 2017 Silver Medalist, will debut on the Young Artists Series in a March 20 solo recital – another “don’t miss.”

Cameron Carpenter (January 8), the first organist to be nominated for a Grammy Award, will present a wide range of music and styles for his first full-length recital on the Kravis Center’s George W. Mergens Memorial Organ, a gift to the Center from Alex W. Dreyfoos. Carpenter’s program will cover core repertoire from France and Germany, plus jazz classics, and even Carpenter’s incomparable improvisations.

A long-time audience favorite, pianist Garrick Ohlsson plays the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 on January 29 (with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, led by the great Neeme Järvi) preceding the return of an amazing new guy on the block, pianist Behzod Abduraimov, as soloist in the infamous “Rach 3” (Jacksonville Symphony, and its new Australian Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall) on February 27.

If the ever-popular Orpheus Chamber Orchestra closes out 2017 (December 5) with star Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk, then more top-shelf ensembles will open the New Year 2018. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with Pinchas Zukerman in the dual role of conductor and violin soloist returns

in two different programs (January 15 and 16). The esteemed Chicago Symphony Orchestra also returns to Regional Arts after a 10-year absence on February 14 and 15, with two innovative programs led by its distinguished Music Director Riccardo Muti.

For celebrated violinists, catch the back-to-back concerts by Joshua Bell (with Academy of St Martin in the Fields Orchestra on March 26), then renowned Daniel Hope (with Zurich Chamber Orchestra on March 27) who pays tribute to his mentor, the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Plus Pinchas Zukerman returns to join powerhouse Itzhak Perlman (February 26) in a long-awaited duo recital with pianist Rohan De Silva. s

The Regional Kitchen & Public House in CityPlace rolled out the red carpet for Kravis Center guests during the Tony Awards® viewing party this past June. While the best of Broadway took a bow, nearly 200 attendees joined in to kick off the highly anticipated 10th Anniversary season of Kravis On Broadway. Winners of the on-line Tony Award® party contest were greeted at the door with special V.I.P. All Access badges at West Palm Beach’s hottest new gathering place. Chef Lindsay Autry at The Regional prepared tasty treats fit for a star, which were passed among the jubilant crowd of supporters, subscribers and contest winners. Refreshments were plentiful, and the bar’s signature “Tony-tinis” were declared a “smash hit!”

While guests posed with props in front of the Tony-inspired backdrop for the “paparazzi,” other attendees made new friends in the cozy lounge area, comparing prediction cards on who would take home the next statuette. The standing-room-only crowd, including new Kravis Center Board Member and Community Relations Committee Chair, Bradley Hurston, was also treated throughout the night to live standup reports broadcast from the party by Tony Award® presenter WPEC CBS 12’s own Liz Quirantes and Suzanne Boyd.

Throughout the enchanted evening, partygoers had the chance to win fabulous prizes including two Kravis On Broadway subscription series. Additional drawings included commemorative programs, hand-made wine

rings and other items themed for the spectacular Kravis On Broadway 2017-2018 season of shows which includes The Book of Mormon, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I, Finding Neverland, Cabaret, The Illusionists Live From Broadway, The Bodyguard the Musical and the breakout Broadway hit, Something Rotten! As the final confetti fell on the Beacon Theatre stage on New York City’s Broadway, the last guests departed with their Kravis Center “swag bags” from The Regional Kitchen & Public House knowing they will soon be able to see the Great White Way’s own Tony Award®-winning shows during the 10th Anniversary Kravis On Broadway season. s

{22} OVATIONS.WINTER.2018

In February, nearly 250 of the Kravis Center’s major donors attended a special evening in honor of the Center’s Founders and Grand Benefactors, Benefactors, Grand Sponsors, Sponsors and Patron Members of the Dress Circle.

Donors and special guests enjoyed a welcome cocktail reception prior to entering the Gimelstob Ballroom for a delectable three-course dinner by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center. The ballroom was awash with candlelight, and the tables were decorated with Versailles mercury overlays and beautifully arranged floral centerpieces featuring white hydrangeas, white roses, light blue delphinium and purple lisianthus.

The annual dinner was sponsored by Northern Trust, which was acknowledged for its sponsorship of the dinner for 21 consecutive years. The performance following the dinner was sponsored by Founder members Alec and Sheila Engelstein and Zelda and Allen Mason.

The Kravis Center’s CEO, Judith Mitchell welcomed guests and acknowledged the new Founder members in attendance. “Tonight we celebrate and thank each of you for the important role you play in supporting our mission to enhance the quality of life in Palm Beach County,” said Ms. Mitchell. “In our last fiscal year, the financial commitment of donors at your level represented 70 percent of our annual fundraising goal of $5.5 million. This fiscal year, which ends on June 30th, our annual goal is $5.8 million. Thanks to your generous support, we are well on our way to meeting and exceeding that goal.”

Ms. Mitchell then introduced Michael Bracci, Kravis Center Board Chairman and President of Northern Trust Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Region.

Mr. Bracci recognized Alexander Dreyfoos, the Kravis Center’s founding Board Chairman, and Eberhard Zeidler, chief architect of the Kravis Center’s original building. He thanked the Kravis Center staff for continuing to keep the landmark institution a thriving success. He also introduced a “look back” video that highlighted the economic impact the Kravis Center has had on the community over the last 25 years.

board member and life trustee reception

Celebrating COMMITMENT, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP!

The Kravis Center honored its Board of Directors and Life Trustees on Tuesday, November 7 at a special cocktail reception in the Kravis Center’s exclusive Shapiro Founders’ Room.

Judith Mitchell, Kravis Center CEO, welcomed the Board Members and Life Trustees, expressing gratitude for their support and commitment to the Kravis Center.

“The Kravis Center would not be functioning without the generosity, leadership and continued support you all provide year in and year out,” Ms. Mitchell noted. “We are indeed grateful for the guidance, commitment and devotion each of you contributes on a regular basis.”

Board Chairman Michael Bracci provided a recap of the last season’s milestones and predicted the current season will be another stellar time for the Kravis Center.

“Tonight is a very special evening honoring very important people,” said Mr. Bracci. “The Kravis Center’s 25th Anniversary celebrated last season brought additional recognition and support to this institution, and exciting plans are in motion for us in the months ahead. In fact, the Kravis Center’s future has never looked brighter.” s

The Kravis Center has truly enhanced the quality of our cultural and social life in Palm Beach County. For more than 20 years, we have really enjoyed the world-class entertainment and the sensational fundraising events such as the Gala and the Palm Beach Wine Auction. Indeed, the Center is a special place for us to bring our friends and colleagues for a memorable evening. Coming from the New York area, we love having the Kravis Center in our “backyard.” It is so easily accessible without driving through the crazy stop-and-go New York traffic in tunnels or over bridges. What a joy!

We believe in the Center’s mission and we want it to remain financially stable for many decades to come so it can continue its extensive children’s education programs as well as be a showcase for national and international artists. It gives us great joy to know that our decision to include a gift to the Permanently Restricted Endowment Fund in our estate plan will help the Center continue its mission. I know you will agree that we are all very lucky to have a Center like this in our community. To the extent you can, we encourage you to consider a gift in your estate plan so future generation may experience the beauty of the performing arts that the Kravis Center offers to all of us.

For information about the Helen K. Persson Society, contact Margaret May Damen, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, CAP® Endowment and Planned Giving Officer at 561.651.4230 or [email protected] or visit kravis.org/endowment.

IMAGINE MAKING A LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR COMMUNITY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME—WITH JUST ONE GIFT. A gift that brings enriching, awe-inspiring and joy-filled experiences to people of all ages and ensures these unforgettable moments will continue into the future. When you give a legacy gift to the Kravis Center, you’ll be among an esteemed group of discerning donors who wish to support the causes that are important in their lives. Your gift will help us continue our mission of enhancing the quality of life in Palm Beach County. Your support today secures our future tomorrow—and will ensure that the Kravis Center retains its reputation as South Florida’s premier center for the performing arts and the community’s top cultural attraction.

STANLEY M. RUMBOUGH, JR.

The Kravis Center has lost a dear friend with the passing of Stanley M. Rumbough, Jr. on September 27, 2017. Stan and his wife, Janna have been longtime supporters of the Kravis Center. Stan was a tireless advocate for the arts and for the quality of life in our community. He served as a member of the Kravis Center’s Board of Directors for twelve years, and since 2007, continued his service in the capacity of Life Trustee. During his tenure on the Board, Stan co-chaired the Development Committee. Under his leadership, the Committee regularly

met and surpassed Annual Campaign goals, ensuring the continued fiscal strength and stability of the Kravis Center. Stan was one of the earliest contributors to the original building campaign, and his generous support of the Center continued through his lifetime.

We will miss this champion of the arts, but the Center and our community are stronger for his having been such a thoughtful and generous friend. s

JOHN B. DODGEWith the passing of John Dodge on November 6, 2017, the Kravis Center has said goodbye to a true friend. John and his wife Lore were early supporters of the Kravis Center’s original building campaign and continued their support through the Annual Campaign since its inception. During the planning stages of the original project, John brought his knowledge of construction and site development to the table, helping us to realize the dream of a performing arts center for Palm Beach County. John was elected to the Kravis Center Board of Directors in March 1995 and served

through June 2007, at which time he was elected to the position of Life Trustee. He served on the Center’s Education, Building and Grounds and Employee Relations committees.

John Dodge was a valued member of the Kravis Center family and will be missed by all who knew him. s
