A whole world of opportunities
From the Careers Service and Edinburgh Global
Making the most of today’s fair
• Before you approach a stand, prepare some questions and think about the main points you want an organisation to know about you.
• Aim to demonstrate a real interest in the organisation by using this opportunity to get insights and tips from people working there.
• Visit your top priority exhibitor after you’ve talked with some others – this gives you a chance to warm up and build confidence.
• Avoid opening the conversation with questions about application deadlines or visas. Instead focus on talking about the organisation, their opportunities and what you have to offer.
• Do get the name of the person you are speaking to. Later, in applications or at interview, you can refer to the person and something interesting they said.
• Stop at one of the Help Points (dotted around the exhibition area) to note down key points you’ve learnt from exhibitors.
• Avoid walking around the fair in a large group. The exhibitor may not realise that you are interested in them.
• Smile - enthusiasm is infectious! Be purposeful and confident, but also polite and courteous.
Organisations are here because they want to promote third sector careers. You may find that there is a strong emphasis on volunteering today - this is a common feature of third sector career paths and reflects the reality of the labour market. Here are some top tips to help you make a positive impression:
If you’ve already researched the exhibitors on MyCareerHub then you’ve got a head start. If not, don’t worry, you can use this guide to help you work out which exhibitors to approach.
