Clearly Leading The Way

The Journey Started…

2Clearly Leading The Way

The journey started for find© with a request to produce some signage which would be easily understood by people with dementia. That was a long time ago and now we have a whole range of products and strategies which contribute to helping people have healthier and happier lives.

We work closely with leading health professionals, universities and the people who use our products, to ensure that we design and produce innovative solutions that transform the environment for people with dementia and cognitive disabilities.

As our approach to product design has become widely validated we are now creating adaptations of our designs to make them appropriate for people with cognitive issues associated with learning difficulties and autism.

We are the Worlds leading manufacturer and our commitment to delivering life-changing solutions couldn’t be greater. find© is an established provider to hospitals and carehomes in the UK and we’re now developing our networks in America, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.

What a difference a cup makes…A lady with dementia would not drink her water and would only drink her tea or coffee, which was being given to her in a blue cup. One day whilst talking to another patient I saw her at the sink washing the blue cup out. I was surprised because this lady did not usually initiate tasks. When I returned from taking a patient to the bathroom I saw the lady filling up the blue cup with water from her jug and then begin to drink it. I informed the nurse in charge and we made a plan to leave her with a blue cup for her water as well as her hot drinks. Since then she is drinking really well and independently.

Health Care Support Worker on Elderly Care Ward

As a nurse specialist for the Gold Standards Framework I called onto the Medical Assessment Unit to see a patient, this lady was asking for a cup of tea, the Support Worker had advised the tea lady to give her it in a feeder cup. I gave the lady the feeder cup but she was clearly struggling. She did not seem to be able to comprehend the concept of a feeder cup. She stated it was a ‘funny cup’. I am also a dementia training facilitator and from my experience, I thought she might be better with a blue cup. I got her a blue cup and found that the lady not only managed to drink her tea independently but she enjoyed it. I feel that if the cup had not been changed she would not have drunk her mid morning cup of tea.

Nurses Specialist Medical Assessment Unit

We have worked with find© to improve the acute care environment for people with dementia in hospital. The signs, blue toilet seats and blue handrails have all been integrated within our wards that care for people with dementia. Using the colour contrasting and signs for way finding especially to the toilet areas has made a big difference to our patients in terms of their dignity and safety.

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust

Providing a memory box for Joan empowered her to become independent again, smiling and enjoying life as she was no longer anxious, frightened or angry because Joan could identify her bedroom as home again. The memory box provided her with dignity and well being.

Abbeyfield Dementia Care Home

I can confirm that the new crockery has been a success for all 3 of the homes who purchased it. One quote I got back from a carer was “Mrs P for the first time in several weeks ate everything on her plate”. Plates don’t slip around like they used to and the broad rim helps the person to hold on to the plate much easier. The beakers have proved very useful especially with residents that have to take liquid through a straw, the lid to the beaker with the hole in is perfect. On another plus side we are about to buy some washing up bowls so that those residents that want to help can, especially as this crockery is indestructible!

Please remember that for maximum effectiveness signage should be installed at an optimum height of 1200-1400mm from floor level.

Finding The Toilet

We take finding the toilet for granted but we’ve all experienced the stress and anxiety of needing a toilet and not being able to locate one!

When dementia is involved, the frustrations are multiplied. This results in anxiety, challenging behaviour and sometimes a loss of dignity too.

Our solution is all about using highly visible, high contrast colours to establish a clear route to the toilet and, once there, to use the same principles to decipher the environment by making the important things (the toilet, grab rails etc) easier to see.

This boosts confidence and independence, as well as helping to maintain or restore dignity.

Our strategies have proved highly beneficial to thousands of people by helping them to find and use the toilet independently, maintaining dignity and supporting their independence.

Finding The Bedroom

Our products make the environment much easier to understand.

A door-cal is a self-adhesive, waterproof, chemical resistant, laminated, fire-rated, hard wearing colour print which can be applied to a flat door in a few minutes, creating the appearance of a brand new panelled door to someone’s home.

To further enhance the door-cal we have a range of accessories including: letterboxes, door knockers and numbers.

We’ve also introduced Windows to the door-cal range. You’d expect to see windows in the street, so we’ve created some attractive, self-adhesive windows which can be easily applied to the wall to create a more realistic, stimulating space.

All the materials we use to make the door-cal come with a Class 0 or equivalent fire rating.

Through intelligent design we have created a range of crockery, which is attractive and dignifi ed, yet incorporates features that makes food far easier to see and manipulate.

These features ensure that food stays warm longer for slower eaters and can be more easily manipulated, with less spillage. This makes for a more dignifi ed and all-round better dining experience, supporting all the benefi ts of better nutrition and hydration, along with the social aspects of less stressful, more enjoyable mealtimes.

By supporting improved eating and drinking, food wastage is minimised, people are signifi cantly healthier and happier and the cost and time involved in direct care is reduced. Our dining range is dishwasher safe.

The find© Calendar Clock is a large 17”x17” square face with a clear analogue dial and the month, date and day displayed in a logical way. Importantly there is no reference to the year. Everything is clear and easy to read and ideal for hospitalsand communal area’s. CQC recommend the use of dementia friendly clocks to reduce stress levels and aid orientation. Ideally, all patients should also have sight of a clock from their bed. Our Day/Night Clocks support people having issues with circadian rhythms by simply displaying the time as well as whether it is day or night. The clock face design is simple, traditional and clear and won’t look out of place in any homeor care setting.

Our latest addition, The Day Clock has been developed by Bath Institute of Medical Engineering and is designed to help people living with Dementia. The design features a simple and clear display showing the time of day as either morning, afternoon, evening or night. The Dementia Day Clock is ideal as people living with dementia as they can lose the ability to distinguish between day or night. The Alzheimer’s Day Clockcan therefore assist primary carers maintain daily routines. Orientation Boards all come with clocks included. These boards can convey a lot more information than a clock alone and can prove invaluable in helping to organise someone’s day with a minimum of stress.

Memory boxes are a great way of improving orientation and encouraging communication and are most effective when filled with a variety of items that are readily recognised and meaningful to their owner.

A thoughtfully assembled Memory Box serves as a highly effective orientation tool for the owner and as a brilliant information resource for carers, enabling them to interact more easily.

Lighting

14Clearly Leading The Way

Quality of lighting affects everything we do. It affects our moods, appetite, activity levels and our general health.

The lighting solutions we provide can reduce energy costs by as much as 80% and provide 50,000 hours of lighting, that’s 6 years of use, 24 hours a day.

“Good lighting in buildings can help people to see what is around them, use landmarks to navigate, identify signs and spaces, see others’ faces and participate in activities. Poor lighting can increase anxiety and may lead to trip and fall accidents if people cannot make sense of what is ahead of them.” Stirling University DSDC

Please contact us to discuss your lighting requirements.
