Tis week I take my last fnal exams ever. Its

a little bittersweet. Actually, no, its mostly just

sweet. I have looked orward to this day or

our years and one semester. Yes, I am a super

senior. No more late nights writing last minute

    papers or cramming or tests.

Tats a lie. I never really had too many

late nights. I like sleeping too much. I tried

to pull an all-nighter once just to say I did it,

but by 6 a.m., I was crawling into bed to take

a nap beore class. My roommates were always

talking about how they didnt go to bed the

night beore so that they could study or write

a paper. I thought it was a right o passage, or

something that I needed to complete. But I just

couldnt.I heard that sleep is important or doing well

on tests, though, which must be how I have

made it through college, since studying wasnt

    my strongest point.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that I

made it. And so will you. Im not saying not

to study, but I am saying make sure you get

    some sleep.

Rest assured you will make it through this

week, and you have the Finals Guide to help

    you through it.

Inside you will fnd music to help you study

and advice on how to temporarily block yoursocial media websites as well as puzzles or

those breaks rom studying. Good luck on your

fnals, and remember to make room or sleep.

    You wont regret it.

As finals approach, students will be thinkingmore about where to study. There are a thousandnooks and crannies on campus, but some of themost popular locations are Watson and Anschutzlibraries, the Kansas Union, the Undergroundand group study rooms in dorms.

Dr. Mary Ann Rasnack, director of theAcademic Achievement and Access Center(AAAC) in the basement of Strong Hall, empha-

sizes the idea that studying is different for eachand every student. She said that while somestudents thrive on silent and independent study, other students enjoy being in locations with manyothers studying.

Above all, each student should do what is bestfor him or her.

It depends on a couple of things, and that, obviously, is the individual student, she said.Noise is especially distracting. For some people, its the movement. Other people need to knowthat theyre not alone.

    Anschutz LibrAry

One of the most popular study locations isAnschutz. Travis Ryan, a senior from OverlandPark, appreciates the fact that everyone atAnschutz is there to study.

Here, thats what everyone else is doing, hesaid, so theres not too many distractions.

Junior Rachael Kerz, from Springfield, Ill.,

goes to Anschutz to get away from distractions ofher sorority house and study quietly.

Its quiet, she said. I can put my headphoneson.

Despite the benefits of studying at Anschutz,Ryan and Kerz both admitted its drawbacks.

During finals it gets really busy, Ryan said, Iwont come here because there will be too manypeople to even get a spot.

Its hard because when you know people andyou see them, its hard not to talk to them andcatch up and say hi and thats kind of distracting,

so thats kind of why I go downstairs.Anschutz is a great place for students to study

whether theyre looking for a quiet, independentsetting or a group study session.

the undergroundAnother popular study destination among

students is The Underground.Angela Figgs, a senior from Topeka, appreci-

ates the proximity of both food and socializationwhen shes at the Underground.

I feel like Im more likely to bump into myfriends here, and if I want to chat with them, Idont feel like Im disturbing anybody like I do

when Im at the library.Though Figgs enjoys the social aspect of the

Underground, she also sees it as a drawback to beproductive and focus.

While the Underground is far more hecticthan Anschutz, the environment is just whatsome students are looking for in a study space.

    KAnsAn union

For students who like to study near the food, the Kansas Union is a similar option to theUnderground.

Stephanie Beauchamp, a sophomore fromWichita, said she appreciates both the atmo-sphere and the resources available at the Union.

Theres not a lot of seating, which means itsvery limited to the amount of people that can

come in, she said. Theres much more foodoptions than at the library.

Casey Miller, a junior from Hutchinson, seesthe Union similarly. He appreciates the fact thathe can stop by between classes.

I came here today while Im in between class-es, he said, and its around lunch, so I can just

grab a bite to eat. While Beauchamp appreciates the limited

seating, Miller wishes the main level of the Unionhad more tables.

I think they could have more tables downhere for people that need to study because, a lot oftimes, when you come in here, you dont see verymany spots open for people who need to put theirbooks on a table and write stuff down.

Beauchamps only qualm with theUnion is its tendency to be a high traffic area.Sometimes, Ill catch people coming in and

out, and Ill stop what Im doing, and itll avert my

attention, and Ill just forget what Im doing.Though the Union can get noisy, its the per-

fect place for students who like having plenty offood and social options at their fingertips whilethey study.

Watson LibraryWatson library provides an atmosphere simi-

lar to that of Anschutz. However, students whoprefer Watson appreciate its lower noise levels.Kaleb Gilmore, a senior from Hoyt, appreciatesthe fact that Watson is less noisy and social thanAnschutz.

I feel like people take it more seriously here.Chas Strobel, a senior from Wayzata, Minn.,

agrees. Its quieter than Anschutz.Gilmore also appreciates Watsons extra space.

I get more space, he said. I sprawl and getcozy.

Though Watson has extended hours duringthe week of finals, Gilmore and Stroble both wishWatson had longer hours all semester.

I really dont have any qualms about it otherthan if it was twenty-four hours, Id love it,Gilmore said.

Strobel also wishes he was able to check out aMacBook charger from Watson.

You cant rent Apple chargers, he said, soI always have to go to Anschutz to get a chargerwhen I forget one at home.

    residence haLL study

    rooms

Finally, a popular study location amongyounger students is the study or conferenceroom on their residence hall floors. Many stu-

dents appreciate the ease of studying at home, butaccording to Rasnack, removing yourself fromyour living area can help you focus.

Its where you live, and filled with easy dis-tractions and easy ways to get off task, she said.

Rasnacks main tip to studying successfullywas to find an environment where you can studywithout distractions, such as your friends orroommate or anyone else in your residence hall.

Removing yourself from distractions is themost important thing, she said. Putting yourselfin an environment that is conducive is the nextmost important thing.

There are a thousand places to study on cam-pus and in Lawrence. Sometimes, it can be tough

for students to find that one place where they canfocus. For help getting organized or finding aplace to study, visit Dr. Rasnack and the staff ofthe AAAC.

After hours spent studying at the library, nights of no sleep and a few deep breaths, itshere, and the only thing standing between youand winter break is a packet of questions and a

Scantron sheet. The word stress goes hand-

in-hand with finals, and its afeeling that both students andprofessors share during thisweek.

I find final exam week tobe as stressful or more stressfulthan [students] do, psychologyprofessor, David Holmes, said.To watch students take an examjust drains the blood out of me.

Holmes said he finds himself in the same

position as many other professors with theadded burden of dealing with students excep-tional circumstances, such as getting sick orhaving travel arrangements on the day of thefinal.

In a Psychology 104 class of almost 1,000

students, the extenuating circumstances seemto be pouring in steadily.

The only solution I have is to get ready veryearly. Ive been getting ready for finals before[students] even thought about it, Holmessaid.

Holmes said he has been preparing for the

final for the past two weeks, and he has allof the pieces together. Hesaid finals are valuable forgauging knowledge.

Unfortunately withsuch a large class, Holmessaid he doesnt have muchof an opportunity to givea more in-depth exam.

I think its better inanother course where wecan watch and test stu-

dents integration of a lot of material. Here I

cant do that, he said. Theres very little I canmeasure on integration, that would requireessay exams, and Im not going to read a thou-sand essays.

Zachary Dennett, a freshman from Winfield, doesnt think that finals are a good test of

gained knowledge. Its just a competition to see who can mem-

orize the right information the day before atest, he said.

Although he isnt stressing for finals,Dennett said he recognizes the importance ofperforming well on them.

They will actually matter. If you fail thesetests they have consequences, he said.

Unlike Holmes, Dennett hasnt felt the pres-sure of exams.

Theres no use being nervous for the inevi-table, he said.

Hannah Arredondo, a junior from Parkville,Mo., said the reliability of final exams lies inthe type of test. Although she doesnt like them,Arredondo said she thinks short answer andessay exams are a better reflection of what stu-dents have learned, than multiple-choicetests.

There have been times students whodo not study at all, end up with better scoresthan those who do, she said.

Arredondo believes students have an unfor-tunate disadvantage when it comes to test anxi-ety.

I think professors often get nervous becausethey want us to do well, but I dont think theyget nearly as nervous as students do, she said.

Many students listen to music while study-ing, the good news is that music actually helpswith memory retention. A research team fromStanford University recently discovered thatmusic helps engage the areas of the brain thatare responsible for attention and memoryretention. The research shows that peak brainactivity in these areas occurs during the short

periods of silence in between music, which isoften heard in classical symphonies.

Sarah Edwards, a freshman from OverlandPark, takes advantage of this.

I prefer to listen to classical music whileIm studying rather than other genres becauseit is more relaxing for me personally, she said.Songs with words can be too distracting, which is an opinion that many students share.

However, according to a physician fromMayo Clinic, melodious sounds help encour-age the release of dopamine in the reward areaof the brain, simply meaning that music can

have a positive effect on mood. Such soundscan be heard in indie and folk music throughslow melodies and light instrumentals.

Since simultaneously listening to musicwhile studying is a form of multi-tasking, it isoften better to listen to music in intervalsin

between reviewing. Music with lyrics will notonly provide a subtle distraction but also keepyou relaxed.

In a ew clicks, websites like Facebook, witter, Pinterest, Reddit and StumbleUpon canopen up and provide entertainment or hours onend. Te Internet allows or instant communica-tion and thereore, instant distraction, raising animportant question: can students avoid wastingprecious study time on social websites?

Dr. Mary Ann Rasnak, the Director o KUsAcademic Achievement and Access Center, saidthat social media can be used both positively

and negatively. Browsing Facebook or gettingnotications or messages and weets can sucktime. She emphasizes the importance o ndinga healthy balance.

Tere have always been distractions, Dr.Rasnak said. Te trick is balancing the needor stress relie, and the need or relaxation andthe need to take time out and take a deep breathand laugh with the preparation that you need todo to do well on your exams and to be successulas a student.

For many, nding that balance is dicult. When students like Caitlin Uyenura, a sopho-

more rom Osage City, are trying to study, socialmedia becomes a time-wasting problem.

Its such a big distraction, Uyenura said. You think youll only spend 10 minutes on itand then you end up on there or an hour.

Much o Uyenuras homework and studymaterials are online, which tempts her to browsePinterest instead o studying. From spring breakuntil the end o the spring 2012 semester,Uyenara deactivated her accounts on Facebook,Pinterest, witter and Instagram in preparation

or nals.I wasnt distracted, so I could study, Uyenura

said. I know that i my account was still up, itsjust a habit to go over to your computer and clickon Facebook. Since I didnt have an account, itorced me to just go straight to studying.

While Uyenura isnt sure i she will be ableto avoid abusing social media through sheerwillpower, deleting her accounts again seemsdrastic. Social media is a daily mode o com-munication in her lie; her basketball campinggroup, or example, uses Facebook to keep incontact.

Plugins may be her solution. Students canactivate plugins or Internet browsers likeStayFocused or Google Chrome and Leechblockor Fireox to program how much time theywant to spend on certain websites in a day. Teycan also limit browsing to certain times o theday, or block websites entirely.

Junior Collin Johnson, rom Council Grove, uses a plugin to block Facebook, witter andwebsites like mylie.com.

I I just block the website, then Im lesstempted to have to get on it, Johnson said. Ican study better or longer periods o time with-

out thinking, Oh, I should get on Facebook andsee i I have any notications! or check out thelatest tweets.

All major web browsers ofer compatiblewebsite-blocking plugins that can be download-ed and installed or ree.
