  • IntroductionBefore moving forward to earning a degree in Medicine, the first step one needs to go through is to choose a pre- medical course. Is there a difference between the clinical performance of B.S. in Nursing and B.S. in Biology graduates in medical school at UERMMMC? v

  • Independent: Medical students in UERMMMC, who are graduates in B.S. in Nursing and B.S. in Biology.

Dependent: Clinical PerformanceMedical KnowledgePatient CareProfessionalismCommunication and Interpersonal SkillsVariables

  • Definition of TermsClinical Performance - used to assess and evaluate the performance of medical students.- based on a model that was developed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). > Medical Knowledge> Patient Care> Professionalism> Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Definition of TermsMedical School- It is atertiary educationalinstitution that teachesmedicine, and awards a professional degree for physicians and surgeons.

University of the East Ramon Magsaysay- the research locale where the respondents, graduates in B.S. in Biology and B.S. in Nursing, are taking up a Medicine course.

  • Medicine Students- These are undergraduates taking up the Medicine courses offered at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay.

  • Significance of the Study

Medical Students. Interpretations and analysis of the data gathered will provide understanding of clinical practices in medicine school.

  • Significance of the Study

To people who want to pursue Medicine - The output of the study will give insights to those who would take their pre-medical courses of either B.S. in Nursing or B.S. in Biology before pursuing their medical career.

  • Significance of the StudyThe future researchers. It will serve as a guide for the development of prospect researches; if they intend to further continue and broaden this

  • Statement of the ProblemThe focus of the study is to know the similarities and differences of the clinical performance of B.S. Biology and B.S. Nursing graduates in the medical school at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay.

  • The researchers would like to know the answer to the following questions:What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:Pre- medical course

Is there a significance difference between the clinical performance of B.S. Biology and B.S. Nursing graduates in medical school?Medical KnowledgePatient careProfessionalismCommunication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Conceptual Framework

  • Research Design

This research study used Comparative Research Method- It identifies similarities and differences between the medical students who are graduates in B.S. in Biology and B.S. in Nursing.

  • Research DesignRandom Sampling is used in choosing the medical students who are graduates in B.S. in Nursing because 116 is their total population. - Hence, 79 students will be randomly chosen to have an equal number with the B.S. in Biology graduates (79).

  • Participants of the Study

The graduates who took their pre- medical courses in B.S. in Biology or B.S. in Nursing, and are currently 4th year medical students having their internship at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay.

  • Research InstrumentA constructive questionnaire was used as a tool to gather and collect data from the actual respondents.

The survey questionnaires used the Likert Scale, wherein the respondents specified their level of agreement or disagreement on a symmetric agree- disagree scale for a series of statements

  • Data Analysis Instruments The interval scale is used to express the data in real numbers so it can be classified and categorized. It determines the distance between two or more variables in terms of equal interval.

    Average Mean Rating

  • Results and DiscussionAn equal number of students came from both Bachelors Degree courses since the researchers wanted to maintain fair treatment to those who are graduates in B.S. in Biology, thus, both having 79 students.

  • Mean Rating on Medical Knowledge

  • Mean Rating on Patient Care

  • Mean Rating on Professionalism

  • Mean Rating on Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Conclusions:The graduates in B.S. Biology has better medical knowledge because they have more medical foundation about theories and topics.

On the Patient Care attribute, the B.S. in Nursing graduates are better because they have more experience on patient care.

Both have the same level of professionalism.

B.S. in Nursing graduates have better interpersonal skills and proves that they are more experienced in actual conversations with patients since they have more involvement on the clinical setting.

  • To those students who are currently taking their pre-medical courses, they should hone their skills in the clinical setting. To those who took B.S. in Biology as their pre-med course, these students should improve their skills in communicating with their clients. It is important to apply what one has learned on theories to the clinical setting. To those who took B.S. in Nursing as their pre-medical course, they should improve themselves on medical knowledge basically on theories. Even though they are good in communicating with their patients and are better in patient care they should be knowledgeable on the individual cases of the patients.
