Antony and Cleopatra

Mark Antony was one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire, together with Octavius Caesar and Lepidus, and was responsible for the eastern part of the empire. He fell in love with Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt.

Antony married Octavius’ sister, Octavia, in an attempt to heal the rift between the two emperors. When Cleopatra heard about Antony’s marriage she flew into a jealous rage as she knew that Antony did not love Octavia. Antony went to Athens when war broke out between Caesar and Pompey, Antony sent Octavia back to Rome and he returned to Egypt.

Caesar was very angry to Antony’s behaviour and he declared war on both Antony and Cleopatra. When the Romans arrived, Antony was offered a choice of how to fight. He chose to fight on sea. The Egyptian navy was inadequate. When Cleopatra’s navy turned and fled, Antony followed them. Caesar defeated him.

Antony got news that Cleopatra was dead. Antony was devastated and decided to kill himself. He wounded himself without dying. His followers took him to Cleopatra’s tomb, where he died in her arms.

Read the following text and answer the questions number 33 up to 36.

Should Mobile Phones Be Banned from School?

Technology is growing fast nowadays, and so is the technology of communicating. For the sake of communication, almost all children beginning from 12 years old own mobile phones. They even have a slogan that ‘What you are depends on what your phone is’. Do they need mobile phones badly before they are 17? In my opinion, mobile phones should be banned from school.

Firstly, the children of the above age seem to have been addicted in using them. This condition has changed the children’s way in spending their spare time. Children do not play together with their friends around them anymore. They tend to enjoy their mobile phones either for playing games or networking. In other words, mobile phones have separated close friends, although they connect people all over the world.

Secondly, children tend to check their mobile phones every 5 minutes to see whether or not there is a notification. This act has disturbed them to concentrate to the lesson.

Thirdly, they seem not to be able to leave them at all. They bring them anywhere, at home, school, or any other places they go. Children even have to carry small bags wherever they move that, I think, they burden them, or at least make them move uneasily.

Next, mobile phone radiation is very dangerous for human’s brain. A research headed by Dr. George Carlo involving 200 doctors and researchers in the WTR (Wireless Technology Research) project found that radiation from the handphone can cause:

o DNA damage and impair the DNA repair process.o he increasing risk of brain disfunction, tumors, cancer, autism,

attention deficit disorder and neurodegenerative disease.o behavioral and psychological problems.o lower sperm count and motility

10

Page 11: Final term assessment grade 11 2

In addition to these acute adverse effects of EMR on sperm motility, long-term EMR exposure can lead to behavioral or structural changes of the male germ cell.

From the above facts, I believe that mobile phones should be banned from school to reduce their using of them. I’m sure the banning of mobile phones from school will help avoid the violent radiation.

(Modified from various sources)

33. This is not the reason of using mobile phone proposed by the writer why mobile phones should be banned from school.A. Students tend to spend their times lesser with their friends around them.B. is’.D. Technology is growing fast nowadays, and so is the technology of

communicating.E. For the sake of communication, almost all children beginning from 12

King Solomon’s MinesBy

H. Rider Haggard

The story begins when Sir Henry Curtis, an aristocrat from England asked Allan Quartermain to find his brother, George Neville, who was lost in seeking King Solomon’s mines. Having the map to the mine site given by a descendent of Jose da Silvestra, a Portugese explorer who claimed to have found King Solomon’s Mines, he agreed to take the request with one condition, that Sir Henry Curtis would provide for Quartermain’s medical student son should he met his end. Allan agreed when a native from Africa was begging to come along.

The journey was begun. They arrived at a vast desert. Nearly died for thurst, they left some of their supplies behind. They found a dirty oase, drank some water, and continued to the mountain known as ‘Sheba’s Breasts’. They spent the night in the very cold cave. There, one of the team died. They also found Jose da Silvestra’s corpes and laid his friend there.

When they were having a rest in a camp, Captain Good met a group of native hunters, who identified themselves as Kukuanas led by Infadoos. Along with them was Scraga, the son of Twalla, King of Kukuana who was very cruel. He found that Umbopa resembled them.

This group was about to attack them that they claimed themselves as ‘the white men from the stars’. They convinced the Kukuanas othersworldly nature. Then they went to Loo, the capital of Kukuana Land, to bring them before King Twalla who ruled the Kukuanas cruelly. On the way, Infadoos told them how King Twalla got the power to be the King by killing his twin brother King Imefu and drove his wife and son away. Umbopa was interested in his information, and finally revealed himself to be the lost prince, Ignosi, the rightful king of the Kukuanas as indicated by the serpent mark around his waist.

The next morning, the met King Twall and his advisor, Gagool. King Twalla warned them that he could kill them, but he was stopped by a display of the white men to display his ability to kill at a distance with their fire arms.

Knowing the cruelty of King Twalla, Umbopa tried to convince the Kukuanas leaders to follow him. They would not do so unless the white men showed the power of the king. They used the next lunar eclipse as their power. When the lunas eclipse happened, they believed that Umbopa had power of the king.

Knowing that Umbopa had the power of the king, Twalla became panic and the civil war was broken. The whitemen won the war and asked Gagool to show where the mines were kept. She did it, but while the men were amazed with the diamond, she tried to trap them inside the cave. Foulata, a Kukuana who accompanied the whitemen and seemed to fall in love with Capatain Good, tried to delay Gagool that she was crushed beneath the stone door. Foulata and Gagool died due to the door closure. Captain Good was saddened by Foulata’s death.

The white men found the way out to escape carrying a handful of the diamond. They decided to return to their country, and left Umbopa with their people. On the

way home, they met George Neville whose one of his legs was lost. Sir Henry Curtis invited Allan Quartermain to live around them together with his son.
