INTRODUCTION:

Kathputly colony is one the big slum of west Delhi. This slum develops during 1960-1970s.

The first people of the slum were puppeteers from Rajasthan. So, the colony got their name

from their first residents. Kathputly means wooden puppet. After that traditional artists,

puppeteers, jugglers, folk musicians, dancers, acrobats, magicians etc. were came from other

part of the country settles there. This slum started from 12 shelters to 2200 families. They

attracted towards city for better work and money. They are basically performers who have

their own culture where father used to teach his entire trick to their children so that these

folk arts can be live. They are called in parties, restaurants, marriages, etc. for their

performance. They used to work on street and roads. But by the end of the day they have to

come to their window less home. The conditions of the people are not good. There are lack

of basic amenities. They are still Urban Poor.

OVERVIEW:

Delhi’s first Slum rehabilitation is a government project by which they want to improve the

condition of urban poor. This is first such a project carried by the Delhi government. After all

Delhi has 900 slums and all of them are needed to upgrade by making basic services

available. Also to save their culture because this is our social heritage.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:

Kathputly colony has unique character. The development of these urban poor should be

done in this way so that they can have better environment which suits to themselves also

save their culture.

Slum-dwellers stay in shanty structures in unhygienic environment, not by choice but by

compelling circumstances as they were thrown out of the formal housing sector, the latter

being unaffordable and much beyond their income levels. So, we need to develop it in that

manner so that they can flourish and grow.

Design of the whole development should be sustainable. Because this is not only about 2200

families or 13000 people approx. but also things related to these people. Also commercial

area should be developed in this way that they don’t affect from this adjoining building but

also serve the slum people for their betterment. There should be all basic amenities with the

places to fulfill their daily need in an effective and efficient way. My aim to provide the

much awaited and necessary infrastructure which will cater the need of those people, so

that the problem faced by them can be finished. Also there should be some places like park,

shopping, training center and recreation etc. to give them a better life.

AIM:

To design a space for the slum people having suitable environment and save their culture

too. Also use extra F.A.R. to create commercial space which can give work to the slum

dwellers and serve other people of the city.

OBJECTIVE:

To design for the programs that offer long term solutions to the problem of survival

for a much broader base of creative talent.

To promote the growth of a vibrant and economically viable artistic community that

has the inherent capacity to create wealth and goodwill for itself and for the nation.

To construct the whole buildings with the locally available material and low cost

material in order to make energy efficient and sustainable structures.

To save our social heritage by preserving their culture and to create a comfortable

environment having all basic facilities.

To educate the people and setup new vocational institutes there.

To provide employment to the people to make their life better.

To provide recreational facilities along with the commercial facilities for the people

to interact and a happy living.

To help the capital city to be one of the good city of the world.

UPLIFTMENT:

Another major concern of this project is to provide the slum people and other people of the

city a better place and uplift the value of the city. Also it will act as the milestone to upgrade

and rehabilitate other slum areas of the city. I believe that the people living in slums are a

core support of the city and must be provided with a meaningful living environment. It will

also help in giving a good platform to the resident who has tremendous talent in different

fields. Slums are generally taken as dirty place and people often neglect. But slums are the

need of other high class colonies and it fulfillment their basic service needs. So, it is necessary

to know the role of that particular slum and its need in society and in economical balance.

SELECTION OF THE PROJECT:

This topic was the first that I outlined. I am specially interested in creating living space for

people and create safe environment for the inhabitants specially for ladies. Also design in

such a way to give professional opportunity and save social & cultural heritage.

pur depot, Narayana, Moti nagar, Karam pura, etc. All these areas are directly or

indirectly depends on these people of kathpulty slum for great extent.

DESIGNING METHODOLOGY:

1.  Objectives and data collection

Study of site and analysis of available information.

Frame objectives, scope & limitations of the project.

Collect basic information about the project and its client. Consultancies and

reference shall be taken from time to time to established books of standards like

NBC, Neuferts, and Time Savers etc.

Apart from this, a detailed study of the site, its potential and handicap if any is to the

root level.

A demographic study of the surrounding areas is also imperative as it will influence

important decisions regarding the usage pattern of the facility and the level of

involvement and contact (both visual as well as physical) with the adjoining areas.

2.  Case studies

Selection of projects taken as a case study.

Area program based on the results from case study reviews.

Comparative analysis between them and relevant justification.

3.  Concept design development

Literature study, site study and analysis, case study to develop appropriate design

language.

  Develop integrated design solution.

4.  Final design development

  Refinement of conceptual design.

  Detailing of project requirements.

  Final design solutions.

CASE STUDIES:

1 ARANYA HOUSING - (affordable low cost housing)  –  This is a community housing

located in Indore, Madhya Pradesh designed for EWS primarily but to ensure balance

development, all sections were catered. This was urban housing aimed to give ready-built

houses. Conventional and locally available building material and construction technique

were adopted.

2 JAUNAPUR SLUM RESETTLEMENT:

This is a resettlement project done in Delhi, India. This scheme identifies a logical and cost-

effective approach to land selection, water supply & drainage, infrastructure planning and

cluster planning with in-built checks for encroachment. It displays appropriate technologies

and provides housing with permanent finishes. The Jaunapur Project is unique not only in

terms of its planning strategies and construction techniques, but it is also the first of its

kind. The adopted system of building is a completely fresh approach in every aspect of

planning, composition, material procurement, assembly, thermal properties, waterproofing

properties, seismic properties and cost differences.

3 CRAFT MEUSEUM AT PRAGATI MAIDAN:

It is located in Delhi, India. The Museum has a specialized library and periodicals pertaining

to Indian arts, crafts and textiles. It is open to public for reference purposes. It documents

the living arts and crafts. Thousands of schools children and students of art colleges visit

the Museum for general exposure to India's rural artistic heritage. The low-lying museum

building, most appropriate for displaying India's rural and tribal arts, is designed by the

renowned architect Charles Correa, to act as metaphor for an Indian village street - affable,

accommodative and active.
