TO: Monir Bahhage, Magnolia System Designer
Bellevue, Employee since 1994
Monir Bahhage, our system designer (and my Guru)
was excellent in helping me decide on the (flat-panel
TV) and components that would work in our home. He
spent hours going over every single piece. Not just the
TV, but the receiver, various speakers, Blu-ray, a
universal remote. . . explaining what it would do for us
to essentially make our TV and music listening so much
more enjoyable. After everything was installed, he
made sure that the little glitches (one on Christmas Eve)
were dealt with immediately—even coming to the
house himself to work out the problem (which wasn’t a
big problem it turned out). The installation was an
amazing process. To watch it you would think that the
space shuttle was being installed! The team was
efficient, knowledgeable, careful and very neat, plus a
whole heap of fun to be around! They put in very long
hours on both days (at least 10-12). Even when a few
unexpected snags happened (like a water pipe behind
the wall where a speaker was going, and no crawl
space where the wiring should go because of a prior
remodel), they managed to figure things out and just
carry on. It was wonderful to watch their teamwork. I
felt so confident everything was going to be perfect.
The third day the programmer came to show me how
to use the universal remote. He was calm, took a lot of
time in explaining, and made sure that I understood (I
am not a techy person). He had the patience of a saint!
All of these guys are geniuses in my mind!!!!
We have proudly told all of our friends and
neighbors about our experience and would certainly
never go anywhere else in the future. Thank you ALL for
a wonderful and memorable experience. Sincerely…

family for 10, 15 or even 20 years. We pride ourselves on
empowering them to meet your needs—providing you a single point
of contact. Someone you’ll want to return to again, and again.
We also carry the finest products in the industry, with a wealth
of brands including quality mainstays like Samsung, Sony and iPod,
as well as high-performance brands like McIntosh, Pioneer Elite and
Sonus faber. Together, with these products and our knowledge, we
can craft a system that will blow you away. All it takes is 15 minutes
in one of our Demo Rooms with one of our System Designers to
understand what the experience can be like in your home.
Then, when it comes time to bring it to life, we will work on your
terms, in your home or office—with your designer, builder or
architect—to make it even better than you dreamed. And when the
installation is done, the service doesn’t end. We offer a service
infrastructure unlike any other in the business to ensure you receive
the best, most helpful after-sales support around. Because we want
your system to be as much fun 5 years from now as it is today.
So with that, I present to you our third issue of M Magazine…to
help dream and inspire. Enjoy...

TO: Tim Cordell, Magnolia System Designer
Palo Alto CA, Employee since 2003
Just a quick note to tell you the great job that Tim Cordell and all
of your installation team did on my project. The guys who ran the
wires showed up on time, respected my house, were neat and
thorough. The equipment was delivered exactly on time. Tim is the
best. He shepherded me through a complicated process. He was
clear on what I would be billed for and when. He went way out of
his way to make sure that everything happened on time.

TO: Nick Koffler, Magnolia System Designer
Bellevue, Employee Since 2007
Buying a new (LCD or plasma TV) these days can be a trying and
lengthy process…luckily, we stumbled upon Magnolia because of a
referral from a friend. (Kristen and I) walked into Magnolia knowing
nothing, and Nick Koffler stepped up and explained just about
everything we needed to know to make an educated decision on what
to buy. After spending nearly an hour with us, we left to shop the price
around. We did in fact find the TVs we wanted for lower prices, and
install estimates that were cheaper than Magnolia. However, we did
not find a place that made us feel as comfortable with the installation,
or a person we could trust as much as Nick. He made us feel that he
would be willing to solve any problem that may arise, before or after
the purchase. Nick even made a house call to check out the space.
To make a long story short, we believe you get what you pay for.
After multiple visits, a house call, and over a month of deliberation,
we decided to spend the extra money at Magnolia because of its
customer service. Plain and simple, we bought from Magnolia
because we felt we could trust Nick. He was an excellent salesman
and information source. Thank you very much, Nick. It was a pleasure
working with you and I look forward to the next audio/video project!

I just wanted to let you know how outstanding a job your delivery
and installation people did today. Their names were Rick and Rolan,
and they went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with
every aspect of the experience. In the future I will steer my
electronics purchases to Magnolia just so I can take advantage of
this type of white glove customer service, as they made sure that
everything was up and running. Thanks for the great service.

for decades. From the 1980’s hit Night Court, for
which he won four consecutive Emmys, to his current
role on ABC’s Boston Legal, Mr. Larroquette certainly
knows his way around a television. But when it came
to creating a system for the Marina Del Rey, California

the other side of television—Magnolia Senior System
Designer Victor Savage.
It was Mr. Larroquette’s son Jonathan who first
introduced him to Magnolia. He was looking for a piece
of furniture to house part of his system, but when he
walked into the Santa Monica store and met Mr.
Savage, “I realized that I had a guy who not only knew

one-on-one relationship with his customers. It seemed
like a good fit—the way I wanted to build my systems,”
Mr. Larroquette said.
“It was about the customer, not just the

The room started coming together when they picked
out a few key pieces, mainly the beautiful looking and

northern Italy. “It’s important to have equipment that

up choosing. “Those speakers down there. I could
certainly go spend a lot more money, but I could keep
those speakers the rest of my life, if I want to,” added
Mr. Larroquette.
So, what’s playing on those fantastic speakers?
“My son just gave me, as a present, the original mono
mix of Pink Floyd’s Pipers of the Gates of Dawn. In
those days, you spent all your time making the mono
mix,” explained Mr. Larroquette. “But The Beatles, for
instance, for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band,
they spent two months—McCartney, Lennon, George
Martin—mixing the mono. They weren’t even there
when they mixed the stereo, so you’re truly hearing
what they wanted you to hear when you listen to the
mono. And, when you’ve got equipment like that down
there, especially those speakers, and you put a mono
track in, it’s so distinct. It’s great listening.”
A work in progress
Today the home theater is a room that the Larroquettes
use and enjoy, but it is also a room that is constantly
changing. It was important to Mr. Larroquette to have a
system he could continue building and improving over
years. “Anybody who says that budget isn’t an issue is
either so rich they’re stupid or don’t know what they’re
talking about. I knew what I wanted to spend because
I knew that eventually I wanted to upgrade,”
Mr. Larroquette remarked.
On his wish list now are a few pieces that will take
his theater to the next level. Starting with a new
projector, screen and “bigger, better amplifiers that
maybe split their duties. I think A/V amplifiers are fine,
but I think I would love to have the McIntosh stuff
Magnolia is carrying now.”
At home in the rest of the house
Mr. Larroquette has made sure that good music and
great technology don’t just stay downstairs. In the great
room that encompasses the kitchen and the family

up for more everyday viewing. And a Sonos wireless
music system allows him to program and play his
favorite music in whichever room he’s spending time in
that day.

he is having fun playing around with new technology
like a USB turntable he’s using to start digitizing his

Blu-ray technology was almost parenthetical because I
bought my sons a PlayStation 3 system to put down

The most important part of the calibration is grayscale.
Why? Well, back in the day television broadcasts were,
of course, in black and white. When color was
introduced, broadcasts needed to be able to deliver a
black and white picture, and a color picture at the same
time. So what the National Television and Systems
committee (NTSC) did was overlap the color picture
with the gray picture, and what we ended up with was
Never The Same Color (NTSC). Okay, bad joke. But what
all of this means is that subtle variations of deep sea
blue to sky blue are created by adding grayscale to the
primary colors red, green and blue. And if the gray scale
is not set right, all of the colors will be off; and no
amount of fiddling with brightness, color and tint will
correct it. You may get sky blue to look stunning, but
miserably alter the color of grass green.
So how is grayscale adjusted? This is done with the
colormeter I mentioned earlier. It reads the light output.
The technician brings a test pattern up on the screen
showing a solid gray rectangle with a black background.
Using the colormeter, he then works to get the gray
rectangle to match 6500° Kelvin. If you say “huh?” now,
I wouldn’t blame you. The first time I heard it was at film
school and I was very confused.
6500° Kelvin—the magic number
The theory is quite simple. The sun puts out light at a
whopping 6500° Kelvin. Kelvin is a unit in which color
temperature is measured. And every day, no matter
what color an object is, it is bathed in that same 6500°
Kelvin. So it would make sense to adjust that gray
rectangle on your TV to match it (remember gray is a
part of each and every color your TV produces).
Basically, if everything on your new television matched
that color temperature, then it is going to look the most
realistic. Televisions that have not been calibrated do
not keep a constant color temperature, instead they
jump around quite a bit.
Dive in...the picture is incredible
So now your television reflects what the director and
cinematographer saw when they planned their vision
and edited it on a studio monitor perfectly calibrated to
6500° Kelvin. The first thing you will notice after
calibration is your picture will seem naturally darker.
That’s because the overall light output has been
improved; meaning everything will look more natural,
color won’t look artificial, and edges will look a bit softer.
You might also be pleased to know, a by-product of ISF
is that when your TV is calibrated to run at peak
performance, you are actually saving on your energy bill.
So ask your Magnolia System Designer about
calibration of your new TV. We have certified technicians
on staff who can do the work. Then, after the calibration
is complete, you’re ready to fully experience the
benefits of your new HDTV. Enjoy.
“Hmmm...why does Frodo have a sunburn?”By Grant Anderson Magnolia System Designer
Having just picked up your new HDTV, you bring it home, hook it up and pop in the new
Lord Of The Rings Blu-ray Disc™ that you bought at Magnolia, but something’s wrong.
Frodo Baggins, whom you remember as being pasty white, has a gnarly looking sunburn.
To save face in front of friends and family who came over to gawk at the new TV, you go
straight into the picture adjustments and pretend to know what you are doing. A few tweaks
here and a few there, and presto…the picture is perfect right? Now the hobbits look like little green men.
Frustrating, yes. But why is it so hard when the picture looked so great at the store? Here’s the secret. When TV manufacturers send out
their HDTVs to be on display in the stores, they try and make the TV stand out from all the others on the wall. They do this by making the
picture as vivid as possible under the harsh fluorescent lighting conditions of most stores. And considering most stores are nothing like
your home, the TV often doesn’t look as good—because it wasn’t calibrated to your unique living space. Don’t get me wrong, the television
you bought or are planning on purchasing has a great picture, but to get it to come completely alive in your room—to get it to reach its
full potential—proper ISF calibration is extremely important.
m a g n o l i a a v . c o m 13| B r i n g i n g i n s p i r a t i o n t o y o u r s p a c e ™12
So what is ISF calibration?
I’ll use an analogy. Think of the childhood game
telephone. The first kid in the chain is the original picture,
created by the producer. And the last kid in the chain is
your television. If the first kid were to say “I like dogs”
and the last kid says “I like cats” then something went
awry in the translation. Your new TV set has a whole host
of features designed to translate the original picture
signal—from brightness to contrast, to gray scale
adjustments, plus other factory settings you can’t even
touch as a consumer. ISF calibration is like being able to
yell out “operator” during the game to get back to the
original message. Or the picture the director originally
intended in the case of the TV.
Founded in 1994, the Imaging Science Foundation
(ISF) has strived to improve the image you see on your
set. They set the calibration standards every ISF-trained
specialist adheres to. When a certified technician visits
your home, he will bring a cornucopia of test patterns,
either from a signal generator or from a calibration DVD,
and a colormeter that is designed to read the light
output from color signals.
Calibrators to the rescue
When the technician sets up shop, the first thing he will
do is access your service menu—which customers can’t
typically access. He will start with the five most
common adjustments—contrast, brightness, color, tint,
and sharpness. These adjustments are done in the
service menu to ensure they can’t be accidentally
changed or lost. Of course you’re probably thinking, I
can adjust all those settings myself on the TV menu,
why do I need someone else? You would be correct.
However ISF technicians do this for a living. They are
trained to notice every little nuance that the average
consumer may miss.
Why grayscale is crucial to color
But these adjustments are not the reason you are going
to want to send him a fruit basket when he is all done.

My must-see
movies, after
ISF calibration
Having worked on films
in the past, they are one
of the major reasons I
strongly recommend
calibration. There is so
much that goes into
making a movie or
television show that the
average person does not
know. Every color, every
detail has a purpose. The
end result being a
suspension of disbelief.
Once you’ve had your TV
properly calibrated, here
are five amazing films
that will really showcase
the difference calibration
makes. I think they will
blow you away with their
cinematography.

3. Gladiator
4. Citizen Kane
5. Curse Of The GoldenFlower

and edited it on a studio monitor perfectly calibrated to
6500° Kelvin.
Enhanced picturequality and moreenergy efficient.[

My must-see
movies, after
ISF calibration
Having worked on films
in the past, they are one
of the major reasons I
strongly recommend
calibration. There is so
much that goes into
making a movie or
television show that the
average person does not
know. Every color, every
detail has a purpose. The
end result being a
suspension of disbelief.
Once you’ve had your TV
properly calibrated, here
are five amazing films
that will really showcase
the difference calibration
makes. I think they will
blow you away with their
cinematography.
1. Lawrence Of Arabia
2. House Of FlyingDaggers
3. Gladiator
4. Citizen Kane
5. Curse Of The GoldenFlower

1080p vs. 720p?
All high definition is not equal. In fact you have two
formats to choose from. 720p was the first HD format
and provided 5 times the resolution of standard-
definition TVs. The new generation is 1080p and is
sometimes referred to as full HD. It has nearly doubled
the resolution of 720p. If you have a set budget, 720p
will run you a few hundred dollars less for a comparable
screen size. Yet with Blu-ray Disc™ becoming more
mainstream, being able to watch movies in their full
1080p glory on your TV is a truly cinematic experience.
Almost there...
Answering these questions should have helped narrow
down your options from about 150 possible TVs to 10 or
20. Now it’s time to consider features. For example, if
you watch a lot of sports you might want to look at
TVs with 120Hz motion smoothing technology for an
incredibly fluid picture. Or if you watch a lot of movies,
consider a TV designed to process film-based content
the way the director intended. Yet, perhaps the biggest
question is what do you want to plug into it? A
new Blu-ray Disc™ player, a DVR, a game system, etc.?
Number of HDMI inputs is certainly an important
consideration and delivers a full 1080p signal to
the screen.
Of course, often the easiest thing to do is to walk
into a Magnolia Audio Video store and ask a System
Designer to help. They’ll put your interests first, by
asking a lot of questions about what you watch, where
you watch it and who is watching. It’s truly the easiest
way to find a TV you’re thrilled with.

f l a t - p a n e l f a b u l o u sHow to pick the right HDTVwanting a sleek, slim flat-panel TV that looks smart on
a stand, or even better on a wall, is easy. It’s thin, a bit
sexy, and the widescreen picture turns homes into
private theaters. So the question is, which one? Anyone
who has stood in front of a sea of flat-panel TVs on the
store wall knows this dilemma. LCD or Plasma? 1080p
or 720p? The 40" or the 50"? (You get the picture).
Suddenly your 37" tube TV looks okay for a few more
months (or years). So, let me arm you with some
information that will help you wade through the host of
options, narrow them down, and get to your ideal TV.
LCD vs. Plasma?
The question is—which is better? And the answer is
neither. Both have characteristics that make them right
for certain situations. Love intense action movies, video
games or fast-paced sporting events? Have a room that
you can lower the shades and filter out the afternoon
light? Then pick a plasma. They perform best when the
room is darker—really showcasing their vibrant color
range and deep black levels. They are also incredibly
adept at displaying fast-paced action in crisp, clear detail.
In contrast, if your room has a lot of natural light
that can’t be toned down by room-darkening shades,
LCD is the clear choice. Generally they’ll handle glare
and reflection better than plasma. So even in midday,
pictures come alive. LCD TVs also come in a broader
range of sizes from 15" up to 70".
Yet, if you have your heart set on one or the other,
both LCD and plasma offer features like antireflective
technology and contrast-enhancing advancements that
are bringing their differences closer together.
What about size?
The rule of thumb is that the seating distance should be
at least two times the diagonal length of the TV screen.
Which means for a 50" TV you’ll want to be able to
position your couch or chairs about 8' away. It’s kind of
like picking out the best seat in a movie theater based on
how big the screen is, only in reverse.

For over a decade BDI has engineered furniture that is
designed to make the home theater feel more like
home. Working with a small group of world-renowned
designers, BDI is always anticipating the needs of today’s
home theaters—earning awards and accolades most
brands could only wish for. Today their premium line of A/V
furniture is defined by quality, innovation and unique design.
A designer’s influence
Take for example BDI’s modern-meets-retro Marina series
(featured right). It incorporates the sleek lines of 1950’s
modernism, in your choice of gloss black or gloss white finish.
Inside, your audio/video equipment is perfectly concealed until it
glows to life behind the black glass doors. It’s the ideal marriage of
beauty and function, all coming together in your space.
Avion, the series that started it all, has lent its well thought-out
feature set to the range of cabinets you see on these pages. It is a
classically contemporary piece—though its natural cherry- or espresso-
on-oak finishes live well in traditional décors as well. It features a top
drawer to conceal a center channel speaker behind speaker cloth (or a
collection of DVDs and CDs). There’s even space for additional components
in a flip-down compartment below.
For those who prefer an update on a traditional look, the Novia series of
cabinets may be the perfect answer. A classic overhanging crown graces the top
of the cabinet, while gently curved legs support the base. Novia is available in natural
stained cherry or a warm cocoa brown finish.
Give your home theater a different spin with Revo—ideal for 32" to 37" flat panel TVs.
A single column of components rests behind a curved glass door, with a compartment for
a center channel speaker. The twist? Give Revo a spin for the perfect view from anywhere
in the room. Available in natural cherry or espresso on oak.
Intelligent home theater by design
Besides décor-enhancing aesthetics, each BDI piece is designed to enhance the home
theater experience. The enclosed cabinets feature flow-through ventilation to keep your
equipment cool, while concealed wheels allow you to easily roll the cabinet away from
the wall to access wiring. Many of the shelves are adjustable and have steel inserts for
years of reliable use. Even the doors close softly. In fact, there are so many well thought-out
features that you may never notice them all. To see them firsthand, visit a Magnolia
Audio Video near you—and experience the many faces of BDI fine furnishings.

The Vienna influence
Vienna Acoustics isn’t in the business of making music.
No, the highly regarded speaker manufacturer is in the
business of transforming the experience that you have
in your home and on your couch, into the goosebump-
inspiring experience of sitting in one of the famed
Vienna concert halls. To them, it’s about creating that
feeling every time you put in your favorite CD or
concert DVD, no matter what kind of music you enjoy.
The music of Vienna hums through every aspect
of Vienna Acoustics. They borrowed the name of the
city for their brand. The names of Vienna’s most
important artists and composers for their products.
And, maybe most importantly, the acoustics of some
of the great music halls, specifically the Goldener
Musikvereinssaal, to create a sound that has
won them customers around the world. “Some
manufacturers are compared to the perfect violin or
musical instrument. Vienna [Acoustics], to the perfect
acoustic theater,” is how International Sales Director
Kevin Wolff described their sound.
What’s in a name?
The tall and proud Beethoven Concert Grand. The
elegant lines of the Mozart Grand. The compact, but
vibrant Haydn Grand. And the critically acclaimed and
sophisticated Mahler. Each speaker was named and
designed to honor a Viennese composer.
“Beginning with our Classic Series, we wanted
to draw a connection between our products and the
wonderful city where they are built, and also where
they receive much of their inspiration,” commented
Managing Director Maria Gansterer. “While Vienna has
a vibrant music scene covering all genres of music, it is
with classical music that most people recognize Vienna
and thus paying homage to the great classical
composers of Vienna only seemed natural.”
Vienna Acoustics Designer and Founder Peter
Gansterer agreed, “There are so many important
composers who lived and worked in Vienna. It was
about honoring them and their work.”
Building a brand
Mr. Gansterer’s journey started with a passion for
music at an early age. He started playing with amps
and going to lectures on electro acoustics while he was
studying something unrelated at the university. As his
interest grew, he began building speakers for friends.
And then friends of friends.
Eventually, Mr. Gansterer’s hobby became a
business, and that business became one of the world’s
“The main difference is in the people we work with.We hire music lovers.”

leading speaker companies. His attention to detail,
design genius and deep knowledge of speaker
technologies have come together seamlessly in Vienna
Acoustics’ products. His pride for the brand and his love
of the product is evident as he talks about a recent
patent on a new, flat cone that will make Vienna
Acoustics’ new line of speakers his best yet.
But at the end of the day, it isn’t about the
technology or the aesthetics of the speakers.

As Ms. Gansterer said, “Peter [Gansterer] just wants
to spread as much good sound as possible.”
The Vienna Acoustics family
Like one might expect, the people who work at Vienna
Acoustics share Mr. Gansterer’s passion for music—all
music. “The main difference is in the people we work
with. When we hire people, all are music lovers. All go
to concerts. They like different types of music, but they

The Vienna influence
Vienna Acoustics isn’t in the business of making music.
No, the highly regarded speaker manufacturer is in the
business of transforming the experience that you have
in your home and on your couch, into the goosebump-
inspiring experience of sitting in one of the famed
Vienna concert halls. To them, it’s about creating that
feeling every time you put in your favorite CD or
concert DVD, no matter what kind of music you enjoy.
The music of Vienna hums through every aspect
of Vienna Acoustics. They borrowed the name of the
city for their brand. The names of Vienna’s most
important artists and composers for their products.
And, maybe most importantly, the acoustics of some
of the great music halls, specifically the Goldener
Musikvereinssaal, to create a sound that has
won them customers around the world. “Some
manufacturers are compared to the perfect violin or
musical instrument. Vienna [Acoustics], to the perfect
acoustic theater,” is how International Sales Director
Kevin Wolff described their sound.
What’s in a name?
The tall and proud Beethoven Concert Grand. The
elegant lines of the Mozart Grand. The compact, but
vibrant Haydn Grand. And the critically acclaimed and
sophisticated Mahler. Each speaker was named and
designed to honor a Viennese composer.
“Beginning with our Classic Series, we wanted
to draw a connection between our products and the
wonderful city where they are built, and also where
they receive much of their inspiration,” commented
Managing Director Maria Gansterer. “While Vienna has
a vibrant music scene covering all genres of music, it is
with classical music that most people recognize Vienna
and thus paying homage to the great classical
composers of Vienna only seemed natural.”
Vienna Acoustics Designer and Founder Peter
Gansterer agreed, “There are so many important
composers who lived and worked in Vienna. It was
about honoring them and their work.”
Building a brand
Mr. Gansterer’s journey started with a passion for
music at an early age. He started playing with amps
and going to lectures on electro acoustics while he was
studying something unrelated at the university. As his
interest grew, he began building speakers for friends.
And then friends of friends.
Eventually, Mr. Gansterer’s hobby became a
business, and that business became one of the world’s

Mr. Gansterer.
For Ms. Gansterer, the atmosphere around Vienna
Acoustics isn’t just like family. It is family. Much more
than just the sister of the founder, her enthusiasm for the
brand, the products, and the entire team is evident in
everything she does. “When building a product by hand,
as we do, it is always the people and their teamwork that
is most important. While it is a bit cliché to emphasize a
family environment, we could not do what we do
without it,” she added. It’s that kind of family atmosphere

that is felt in both the company headquarters and in their
factory just outside of Vienna.
White gloves, golden ears…
Inside the Vienna Acoustics factory, there is a high
standard for excellence. From Ms. Gansterer’s
worldwide search to select the perfect veneers, and the
12 coats of lacquer that are carefully applied for the
perfect finish, to the hand-numbering of serial numbers
on each speaker pair, quality is built into every step.
A careful, white glove inspection ensures that every
product that leaves the factory looks museum perfect.
Looking perfect is one thing. Sounding perfect is
another. A combination of man and machine perform
quality control on every speaker. While most speaker
manufacturers test each speaker against the other in the
pair, Vienna Acoustics tests every speaker against the
original reference speaker with a highly sensitive
machine that plots even the slightest discrepency. This
means that the pair that ends up in your home has the
same exact sound as the perfect model in the factory.
Next, each speaker goes on to the even stricter
test—a human one. Four employees are the company’s
“Golden Ears”, which requires them to carefully listen to
find any imperfection and pull any speaker that doesn’t
live up to their high standards. It’s these measures that
truly set Vienna Acoustics apart from the competition.
Bringing them home
You just have to listen to them to understand it. “Once
people have listened to our speakers, they realize how
good they are,” said Mr. Gansterer. And, with Vienna
Acoustics’ impressive collection of speakers at many
price points, there truly is one for everyone. Added
Mr. Wolff, “even at the high end of the speaker market,
there are values.”

“The best I’ve ever created…”
Vienna Acoustics Designer and Founder Peter Gansterer
doesn’t launch a new speaker line on a whim. The
company is committed to getting new products to the
customer only when they can significantly improve on
the technology. For the new Klimt series “THE MUSIC”
he did just that, commenting, “this system is the best I’ve
ever created.”
It was a technology that Mr. Gansterer had been
thinking about and working on for a long time. “I knew it
was the best. I always knew a flat cone was best. It’s just
very difficult to make,” he said. It was years of his work
that produced a driver that used a revolutionary flat cone.
It was that lightweight cone, with the best mass-stiffness
ratio in the industry, that led to “THE MUSIC’s” truly
remarkable sound.
A whole new look and sound
The Klimt speakers not only sound different, they look
different too. The long, lean body houses three bass drivers
in a sleek, leaning cabinet. The movable top unit handles
the mid and upper bass that best represent the human
voice, and can be adjusted to create the right sound for your
room. “You can point it downward, upwards, right and left,”

Creating a reference
This new technology is not just important for these
speakers, but for future Vienna Acoustics speakers. As the
reference speaker for the new Klimt series, it will be the
speaker that all other speakers in the line are tested
against to ensure the best possible sound.
Naming Klimt
Honoring Viennese artist and leader of the Secession
movement, Gustav Klimt, was important to everyone at
Vienna Acoustics because of the influence that music had
on his art. “Naming a product is always difficult. We
wanted to draw on our own heritage while also implying,
by name, that we have created something new. The entire
art movement that had Klimt as its leader seemed
not only interesting, but also appropriate,” explained
Managing Director Maria Gansterer.
Klimt. A fitting name for a new speaker that
looks radically different and is taking Vienna Acoustics to
their next chapter, and listening experience to the
next level.

When Pioneer set out to make a new display, their
engineers sought to create the most immersive,
experiential, emotionally powerful television possible.
So with the KURO line of plasma TVs, they started from
scratch; and dedicated their passion to making a truly
revolutionary display that reproduces what the artist
originally intended. And that meant, above all,
achieving the blackest blacks imaginable.
Because when it comes to TV, black is everything.
Black is the canvas. Black is the foundation. Black gives
each color greater definition, additional shades, more
depth and the sharpest details. In red. In green. In blue.
And everywhere in between. A truly black black breathes
life into color and forever changes the way you think
about TV. And black, as you might expect, is at the very
heart of what the KURO plasma displays are all about.
From sound reproduction to reality
For years, HD has stolen the show in home theater
advancements, and many of the changes in receiver
technology have been in support of new HD video
standards. Today, Pioneer is bringing the HD leap to
surround sound with their new line of Elite receivers
with the Direct Energy HD amplifier with ICEpower™
class-D analog technology. They process the latest HD
audio formats, including Dolby® True-HD, DTS-HD®
Master Audio, and uncompressed LPCM all with THX
Ultra2 Plus post processing—delivering the next
generation in high-definition multichannel home theater
surround sound.
The flagship SC-09TX model represents Pioneer’s
biggest transition in years. At the heart, it’s a Direct
Energy HD 10-channel amplifier with 1400 watts of total
power—delivering maximum audio resolution to multi-
channel formats. Yet perhaps what is most innovative is
its ICEpower Class-D analog amplifier technology. This
revolutionary design is about 90% efficient vs.
traditional amplifiers (which operate at about 50%
efficiency). The Class-D amplifier design also achieves
amazingly detailed audio resolution by switching
transistors on and off completely. The result is an
experience that resonates with all of the authenticity
and emotion of the original performance. And when this
receiver is combined with a KURO display and an Elite
Blu-ray Disc™ player—the experience in your home has
never been more real . . . more intensely authentic.

The digital evolution
The arrival of new digital
sources, such as Apple’s
iPod—HD Radio and XM/Sirius
Satellite Radio—have created
wonderful new listening
opportunities, particularly in the
area of control. These new digital
devices are menu based and allow
users to sort and organize their music into genres,
artists, albums, and personalized playlists. The result is
the ability to custom-tailor a music experience. Yet more
importantly, these devices offer the ability to share this
content information with remotely located devices—a
critical component of simple, intuitive whole home
control. For example, you can have an iPod docked in
the kitchen, and view and access its songs and playlists
using a control panel in the master suite.
Centrally located entertainment—
accessible from anywhere
The flat-panel TV has accelerated everyone’s desire to
find a clean, unobtrusive place for technology in their
lives. They love all of the entertainment possibilities that
technology offers, but often resist the gear encroaching
upon their living space. System Designers are
responding by organizing most or all of the
equipment in a central location, hidden
from view. Advanced systems have
the ability to distribute and control all
the centralized audio/video, and make
it easily accessible from anywhere in
the home. You no longer go to the
entertainment—it comes to you.
IntelliControl® ICS
The IntelliControl ICS system from Niles
delivers on the desires of today’s audio/
video enthusiasts. And the professionals at
Magnolia can design and install a system
that is perfectly tailored for each individual.
The IntelliControl ICS
system features all the
popular sources and
simplifies operation with
automated one-touch
control. Intelligent system
management ensures that everything
works as it should, each and every time. Intuitive
control is provided via an assortment of attractive touch
screens and keypads available in a variety of designer
color finishes. In addition, the new iRemoteTS, a
wireless full-color touch screen control, enables the
user to roam the house and access any home theater or
the multizone audio/video system with ease, from a
single user interface. The IntelliControl ICS system,
coupled with the skills and creativity of
Magnolia, provides the customer with a
unique, unparalleled home entertainment
experience.

the introduction of the ZR-6, a whole-home
audio/video system that features plug-and-
play iPod integration. The system’s Solo6-MD,
a compact wall-mounted keypad, includes an
easy-to-read LCD that displays the metadata
from the iPod and other menu-based digital sources.
While the IntelliControl ICS system offers a higher
level of customization and flexibility, the ZR-6 offers
many of the key attributes that simplify operation,
including one-touch automation and control.
The future looks bright
The future will continue to offer wonderful
advancements (and new challenges) in home
entertainment, and both Niles and Magnolia are
committed to keeping pace with evolving
technology and customer desires. If the past is
any indication of the future, then the modern
audio/video enthusiast is in good hands.
o m e entertainment has come a long way since Niles and Magnolia
first started working together nearly 20 years ago. Early on it was all
about bold, dynamic 2-channel audio. Then, in the 1990s home theater
as we know it came on the scene and dramatically altered how we
experienced television and movies. Home entertainment eventually
expanded beyond the confines of the home theater and family room.
Today people want to enjoy their favorite movies, TV shows and
music anywhere in their home—when they cook in the kitchen,
entertain in the great room, or relax by the pool. They want the ability
to create listening “zones” that allow everyone in the family to select
and operate specific sources, independent of the other zones of their
home—creating their own personal oasis. Today’s audio/video
enthusiasts want a system that is easy to use, so that every family
member can access the fun. They also want it to complement and
blend with their home’s décor.
“One Touch to Music”. The Contact wall-mountcontroller makes music selection easier than
ever, and provides one-button control overwhole-house audio systems.
The weather-resistant Solo-6MD with 2" LCD displayallows you to view andcontrol your iPod’s playlistfrom anywhere—inside oroutside of your home.
The iRemote TS bringstogether multizoneaudio/video and hometheater into a single, unifiedwireless system. It allowsaccess to sources and digital content using thebright, high-contrast touch screen display.

The digital evolution
The arrival of new digital
sources, such as Apple’s
iPod—HD Radio and XM/Sirius
Satellite Radio—have created
wonderful new listening
opportunities, particularly in the
area of control. These new digital
devices are menu based and allow
users to sort and organize their music into genres,
artists, albums, and personalized playlists. The result is
the ability to custom-tailor a music experience. Yet more
importantly, these devices offer the ability to share this
content information with remotely located devices—a
critical component of simple, intuitive whole home
control. For example, you can have an iPod docked in
the kitchen, and view and access its songs and playlists
using a control panel in the master suite.
Centrally located entertainment—
accessible from anywhere
The flat-panel TV has accelerated everyone’s desire to
find a clean, unobtrusive place for technology in their
lives. They love all of the entertainment possibilities that
technology offers, but often resist the gear encroaching
upon their living space. System Designers are
responding by organizing most or all of the
equipment in a central location, hidden
from view. Advanced systems have
the ability to distribute and control all
the centralized audio/video, and make
it easily accessible from anywhere in
the home. You no longer go to the
entertainment—it comes to you.
IntelliControl® ICS
The IntelliControl ICS system from Niles
delivers on the desires of today’s audio/
video enthusiasts. And the professionals at
Magnolia can design and install a system
that is perfectly tailored for each individual.
The IntelliControl ICS
system features all the
popular sources and
simplifies operation with
automated one-touch
control. Intelligent system
management ensures that everything
works as it should, each and every time. Intuitive
control is provided via an assortment of attractive touch
screens and keypads available in a variety of designer
color finishes. In addition, the new iRemoteTS, a
wireless full-color touch screen control, enables the
user to roam the house and access any home theater or
the multizone audio/video system with ease, from a
single user interface. The IntelliControl ICS system,
coupled with the skills and creativity of
Magnolia, provides the customer with a
unique, unparalleled home entertainment
experience.

create their own personal space, it had almost
everything they had ever wanted. Almost.
The one thing it was missing was the standout
technology Steve had been placing in his customers’
homes for years. But, after an extensive, year-long
remodeling project with family and technology top of
mind, it had everything they wanted.
Designing his own system
Steve and Kristine McHugh had an impressive laundry
list of technology they wanted to include in their new
home. A dedicated home theater. Another theater room
for their two daughters to enjoy with each other and
with friends. An ADT security system that they could
control from a Control4 home automation system.
And, perhaps most importantly, music and lighting
control throughout the home.
Putting a picture to the music
The McHughs knew all along that they wanted to be
able to play music all over the home. With in-ceiling
speakers hidden in nearly every room and TVs
placed throughout the house, you’re never far from a
great experience.
Whether they’re watching and listening to an Elton
John concert DVD or want to put their latest family
vacation photos to music, the Control4 system can
make it happen. “I love having concert DVDs playing
throughout the house, so that’s how it is networked,”
Steve said. “And with Control4, you can add photos to
play on the screens. So, right now I have family pictures
on the screen and the same music playing all around
the house.”
Seeing lighting in a whole new light
It’s the lighting control that has surprised the family the
most. “I really, really love control of the lighting. If I had
to say what was the coolest thing I’ve discovered after
being in this business for 25 years, it’s how incredible
automated lighting is,” commented Steve.
“In our old house, before a party, I would go
through the house and turn every light on because
that’s how a house looks its best. Now I just hit a few
buttons,” added Steve. But, the McHughs found the
benefits of lighting control go far beyond the ability to
program lighting scenes for parties.
Lighting control has become a part of everyday
living in the McHugh household—saving energy,
money and even some parental/child tension. With the

“The girls like the lighting because there’s no
stress for me. They know that I won’t wig out when they
leave the lights on,” added Steve. And it helps for times
when he’s the one guilty of leaving lights on. “We
always leave our bedroom closet light on. Now it goes
off on its own after 15 minutes.”
It’s not just turning off the lights that is saving
money. Even the lights that are turned on have become
more energy efficient. ”Before these lights were
programmed, when you walked into this room [living
room] and hit the switch, the lights would go on at
100%, which is a lot of light. More than you need. Now
they come on at 60%, which uses a lot less energy,”
explained Steve.
Room for two theaters
Beyond lighting and music, there is one thing that is at
the heart of every well-connected home—the home
theater. In the McHughs’ case, there are two. Mom and
Dad’s theater. And the girls’ theater.
With two well-equipped lower-level home
theaters, there is certainly space for everyone to play
and relax. The girls’ theater room—equipped with a big
screen TV, a MartinLogan sub, an Xbox 360, and the
latest and greatest Guitar Hero—can easily entertain
the energetic girls and their friends for hours.

niche. The B&K, made in America. A real solid, high-
current piece. Vienna Acoustics, a handmade speaker
from Austria. Phenomenal product. I fell in love with the
richness and look. MartinLogan…I love their subwoofer
offering and thought it was a nice blend.”
All this along with a projector TV and screen, and of
course, a Blu-ray player. “Blu-ray is amazing. I bet wrong.
I thought just the word HD-DVD would have intrigued
more people. But, of course Blu-ray won the war. I have
the same Elton John concert in regular DVD and Blu-ray,
and I show that always when someone’s getting a theater

Getting the most out of their new home
The entertaining, new technology and more complex
Control4 programming will all come with time. The
flexibility of Control4 will allow them to build upon their
current system over time as the needs of their family
change. Right now, the McHughs are just getting used to
the technology all around them and enjoying a lot of
quality time snuggling on their Acoustic Innovations
theater seats. As Steve explained, “We have a lot of
movie nights. We talk about having people over and
using the beanbag chairs, but most nights we end up
sitting there and enjoying it . . . just the four of us.”

from the pixel only dimming, or residual glow from a
backlight. Being able to turn the pixel off completely
results in deep, inky blacks and an unheard of contrast
ratio of 1,000,000:1 (some of the best Plasma TVs only
achieve a contrast ratio of 100,000:1). Since TVs paint
with black to achieve shades in colors, this amazingly
high contrast ratio represents a quantum leap in depth
of color and detail.
Living, breathing color
Light from your room hitting the colors displayed on
your TV is the enemy. It washes colors out and dilutes
their impact. Sony’s unique “Super Top Emission“
technology, combined with a special micro-cavity pixel
design and color filters, allows OLED to achieve
amazing color purity and a wide color expression. It will
redefine your definition of lifelike.
So fast...so bright
OLED technology delivers response times that are
incredibly fast. So fast in fact, it cannot be measured in
milliseconds (as with other display technologies).
Blurring and flicker are virtually
nonexistent. In addition, OLED elements
emit light that is directly displayed on
screen for amazing high brightness.
Today and tomorrow
OLED technology is here and now, in the
form of Sony’s 11" desktop model. Yet it
doesn’t take much to imagine the
possibilities, where super-slim displays hang
on the walls throughout your home. In fact,
Sony displayed a 27" prototype at the 2008
Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Larger OLED
displays won’t hit consumer markets anytime
soon, but if you want to see the future of flat-panel
technology today—this 11" personal TV is on display
and available at select Magnolia Audio Video stores

imagine a TV that’s about as thick as three credit cards
sandwiched together. Imagine a TV that delivers a
contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. Now, imagine color so rich
and deep that you feel like you’re not watching TV at
all—rather you’re looking through a window. No, this is
not science fiction. It’s OLED and it is available today in
a first-ever 11" desktop design. And it is set to
revolutionize the future of flat-panel TVs.
An unbelievable 3mm thin
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. And
these TVs achieve their revolutionary slim form because
the organic material itself (carbon) directly emits light.
Which means an OLED panel doesn’t need a thick
backlight or complex construction like other traditional
TV technologies to produce a bright, vivid image. To
emphasize this point, try this: pull out three credit cards
and hold them together. That’s how thin this display is.
Considering this, it doesn’t take much to imagine the
wealth of TV placement options this technology could
open up in the future.

from the pixel only dimming, or residual glow from a
backlight. Being able to turn the pixel off completely
results in deep, inky blacks and an unheard of contrast
ratio of 1,000,000:1 (some of the best Plasma TVs only
achieve a contrast ratio of 100,000:1). Since TVs paint
with black to achieve shades in colors, this amazingly
high contrast ratio represents a quantum leap in depth
of color and detail.
Living, breathing color
Light from your room hitting the colors displayed on
your TV is the enemy. It washes colors out and dilutes
their impact. Sony’s unique “Super Top Emission“
technology, combined with a special micro-cavity pixel
design and color filters, allows OLED to achieve
amazing color purity and a wide color expression. It will
redefine your definition of lifelike.
So fast...so bright
OLED technology delivers response times that are
incredibly fast. So fast in fact, it cannot be measured in
milliseconds (as with other display technologies).
Blurring and flicker are virtually
nonexistent. In addition, OLED elements
emit light that is directly displayed on
screen for amazing high brightness.
Today and tomorrow
OLED technology is here and now, in the
form of Sony’s 11" desktop model. Yet it
doesn’t take much to imagine the
possibilities, where super-slim displays hang
on the walls throughout your home. In fact,
Sony displayed a 27" prototype at the 2008
Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Larger OLED
displays won’t hit consumer markets anytime
soon, but if you want to see the future of flat-panel
technology today—this 11" personal TV is on display
and available at select Magnolia Audio Video stores
near you.

imagine a TV that’s about as thick as three credit cards
sandwiched together.
A million to one contrast
When an organic pixel is turned “off” the result is
complete darkness. Other TV technologies often suffer

Setting the mood
If you’re thinking about moving your family and friends
outdoors and extending your living space, blending
entertainment into the experience can transform that
space as significantly as water features, tiered patios
and manicured gardens. By extending audio outdoors,
you can set the mood of an upbeat afternoon pool
party, as easily as a romantic Caribbean night under the
stars—all in the same day.
The effect is truly dramatic when done
professionally. And the best way to ensure the
experience is flawless is through careful planning. In
the outdoors, where there are no walls to reflect sound
back at the listener, speaker placement is crucial.
Working in zones, the goal is to achieve a perfect
overlap, so the music feels as though it follows
you through the entire outdoor space. Never louder
in spots, never dropping off—simply constant, clear,
and beautiful.
Heard not seen
When outdoors, people want to hear rich, natural
sound, but not see the speakers. Nothing should
detract from the natural surroundings. Today, many
speakers are made to blend naturally with your
outdoor décor, from a range of rock speakers, available
in convincing faux designs, to speakers embedded in
actual rocks. There are even planter speakers that can
hold soil and grow your favorite florals while emitting
their remarkably clean, clear music. And for those
traditionalists, there are the speakers that can be
mounted under eaves or into walls—with paintable
grills to blend into the surrounding structures.

is the extension of automated control outdoors. It

Denon’s new line of separates consist of a home
theater processor (AVP-A1HDCI) and companion
10-channel power amplifier (POA-A1HDCI). Together
they house the most advanced and powerful audio and
video processors available today—redefining the
concept of high-definition audio and video. In fact,
these are the world’s only truly balanced transmission
multichannel A/V components. This means the signal is
balanced from input to output stages on both pieces.
Something not found in these products’ class, or in fact,

Unparalleled flexibility and acoustic control
Take for example the AVP-A1HDCI home theater
processor. It offers a complete suite of the latest digital
surround technologies, including Dolby TrueHD™ and
DTS Master Audio™ decoding, and THX Ultra2
certification. It also extends the high-definition realm to
include state-of-the-art video processing—accepting
virtually any video signal type and resolution,
upconverting to both high-definition component video
outputs, or the latest v1.3 HDMI digital video outputs.
And with 1080p/24fps pass-through capabilities it
delivers the fullest expression of high-definition
sources like Blu-ray. This is truly the ultimate in 1080p
high definition.
You’ll also enjoy three analog and one digital four-
zone multisource capability. Meaning this unit is more
than capable of delivering entertainment throughout
your home—complete with built-in Wi-Fi networking
and iPod connectivity. Altogether, it brings total home
entertainment together in a dynamic and powerful way.
Ultimate reference 10-channel power amplifier
Surround sound speaker configuration options abound, and
the AVP-A1HDCI home theater processor can be easily
configured to drive five, six, seven, nine or even 10 audio
channels. When paired with the POA-A1HDCI multichannel
power amplifier, you enjoy astounding flexibility. Each of the
10 individual monoblock power amplifier channels has its
own DC power supply for maximum inter-channel isolation
for purity of sound. Plus, this amplifier’s powerful 150 watts
per channel offers true low impedance drive capabilities for
compatibility with the most sophisticated loudspeaker
systems. Channel pairs can even be bridged for additional
high-power output, up to 500 watts into 4 ohms.
Incomparably powerful, yet easy to use
All of this technology and power is controlled by an
on-screen graphic user interface that harnesses the
immense capabilities of the two units with the ease and
simplicity of intuitive on-screen selections. There is even
Audyssey’s advanced MultiEQ XT™ in-room acoustical
evaluation and sound tailoring technology. It performs an
automated, multi-point assessment of your surround
sound speaker system and room acoustics to beautifully
balance the dynamics of your surround sound experience.

Only 1.5" thin . . .
Yes, you read that right—1.5 "—
about half the depth of most flat
panels today, which generally
range somewhere in the 3.5"
to 4.5" thick category. At
their essence, these panels are
truly works of finely
engineered art and
the first in what
proposes to be a
new category of flat-panel
displays, called ultrathin.
Location . . . location . . . location
What they represent is an enormous breakthrough in
minimalist design, aesthetics and style. More flexible,
modern and sleek than traditional flat-panel displays, they
are capable of blending into the very fabric of today’s
homes. Master suite, bathroom, kitchen or living room—
wall, shelf or mantle—the options are endless.
Currently you can choose from 32-, 37-, 42-inch
screen sizes. Each rising off a pedestal stand with
streamlined ease, or hanging lightly on a wall with the
polish and grace of a picture frame. In fact, a glossy, high-
precision beveled frame surrounds the display—making
the picture feel as if it were a work of art.
Which it is . . .
Of course none of this would matter if the picture wasn’t
exceptional. At the heart, these flat panels are top-of-the-
line HDTVs. They make no compromises to achieve their
trim form. Rather, Hitachi utilizes a proprietary technology
called EEFL (External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp). This
innovative design exceeds the color capabilities of the
HDTV standard, provides greater power efficiency and
contributes to longer display lifespan.
Other impressive features include In-Plane Switching
(IPS), which delivers an incredibly sharp, clear picture with a
wide 178° viewing angle. Plus, an enhanced high-resolution
image engine called Picture Master HD V which processes
the images at high speed for incredible picture quality. It
actually optimizes contrast, color, hue, saturation,
brightness and gradation, frame by frame and pixel by pixel
for a crisp, naturally beautiful picture.
A little love for the movie lover
The frame rate of these innovative HDTVs (120 frames per
second) is 5 times faster than the film industry standard (24
frames per second) and twice as fast as the fastest HDTV
signal. The challenge has always been as you convert from
the frame rate of film to TV, the result can be a jerky effect,
called judder. Hitachi’s own Anti-Judder Technology (on 37"
models and up) effectively eliminates this by intelligently
interpolating frames based on the original movie. These
two technologies together surpass the smoothness of the
original film and present a razor sharp picture.
Altogether, innovative technology, an amazingly sleek
1.5" thin frame, and carefully thought out aesthetics put
these displays in a class of their own—bringing TV and
movie viewing to a whole new level at home. To catch

one of the best I’ve heard comes from our friends at

technology uses subtle, yet complex, directional cues to
completely free the sound of this speaker’s 9 precisely
aligned drivers from the box. Altogether it convinces your
ears and your brain that you’re surrounded by a full set of
Definitive Technology loudspeakers.
Now I’m guessing you’re a bit skeptical. Yet when I
first heard the SSA 50 at the Consumer Electronics Show in
January, I was blown away. The three-dimensional sound
field that it produced from this 9-driver sound bar was truly
impressive. On several occasions my colleagues and I
looked over our shoulder to make sure the Definitive
salespeople weren’t pulling a prank on us with hidden
speakers—it sounded that real.
Audiophile-grade sound quality
Yet what was just as impressive as the surround effect, was
the sound quality. Many bar-type speakers we’ve heard
have fallen short of the kind of basic sound performance
we want for our customers. It is here that the Definitive
SSA-50 really shines. With music and soundtracks we hear
the kind of audiophile-grade sound quality that we’ve come
to expect from Definitive—rich, clear and accurate.
At 461/4" wide, the SSA-50 is perfect for a TV that’s
50" and larger. A smaller model designed to fit 40" to 46"
TVs will be available this summer. Both are crafted in
aircraft-grade aluminum (in either black or brushed
aluminum finish) and can easily be wall mounted with
the included hardware. So, if you feel that traditional
surround speakers are not the right fit in your
room, visit the nearest Magnolia Audio
Video to hear the Definitive SSA-50 for

believe.n ever . . . ever . . . ever. That’s what I would have said
years ago if you had told me you could get an expressive
surround experience from a single speaker. Yes, sound
reflects around the room, and even a professionally
imaged stereo setup with a subwoofer can dramatically
alter a room’s acoustics. Yet, in my mind, a “grab you in
your seat” surround sound experience was reserved for 5
and 7 speakers painstakingly positioned about the room.
Now don’t get me wrong. If you love the theater-
style experience, there is still nothing that beats the
dynamics and acoustic imaging of a full surround sound
system. Still, there are some areas of your home where
it’s inconvenient to accommodate all the speakers and
wires. Spaces in your home such as bedrooms, game
rooms, smaller family rooms and wide-open floor plans can
present decorating and wiring challenges that make it
impractical to accommodate all the speakers you need.
Introducing the Mythos Solo Surround Array

single-speaker surround solutions for
situations just like these,

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
An epic tale about the Christian Crusades. Set in the
late 1100s in Jerusalem, Kingdom of Heaven has it
all. The battle scenes. A breathtaking soundtrack. And
sweeping landscapes that draw viewers in at every
corner. Magnolia System Designer Joe Lanzetti talks
about why Ridley Scott’s 2005 movie, Kingdom of
Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson,
is one of his favorites to show customers that walk
into the store.
M Magazine: Why do you like to demo Kingdom of

Joe Lanzetti: I still think it is one of the most beautiful
films out there as far as a demo goes because it
encapsulates everything about video and audio in a

M Magazine: Why do you like to demo The Prestige
for your customers?
Tony Bailey: With a lot of movies, if you want to show
something in the movie that will give the customer an
idea of what the theater is really like, you have to jump
to chapter 4, chapter 16…somewhere in the middle of
the movie. And, if the person hasn’t seen the movie
before, you’re scared of ruining the movie for them.
With The Prestige, I can play the first four minutes and
that takes care of it.
M Magazine: What happens in those first four minutes?
Tony Bailey: It starts off very quiet. Then, there’s a slow
pan across a hillside under a bunch of pine trees with a
bunch of black top hats sitting on top of pine needles,
and you can really see the details. You can hear the
wind building and getting a little louder. Then, all of
a sudden, a voice comes out of the center and says,
“Are you watching?” Every time I show it to customers,
they’re startled by the voice. They get an idea what
the movie is about and how great Blu-ray is almost
immediately.
M Magazine: Is it the sound or the picture that benefits
most from Blu-ray?
Tony Bailey: Having a great picture is important, but I
think audio is even more important. You’re drawn into
an environment, not by the visual, but by the sound.
That’s why people pay to see movies in a theater.
M Magazine: What do you want your customers to
know about Blu-ray?
Tony Bailey:The nice thing about Blu-ray is if you have
a system that you think is great now, you haven’t really
heard or seen it until you put in a Blu-ray Disc.

video. When you see the details and the production
value of the movie and hear the music, you get drawn
into the picture—more so than if it was on DVD. The
details are there, and it really heightens the experience.

showcased on a good system, you can see all of their
armor and all of their weapons. It brings a new level to
the word epic.
M Magazine: How is the Blu-ray version of this
movie different?
Joe Lanzetti: Because Blu-ray’s capacity is greater for
storage than DVD was. One thing that really helped
Kingdom of Heaven was that it was a director’s cut that
came out on Blu-ray the first time vs. the theatrical
release of the movie when it first came out. When you
watch the theatrical version vs. the Blu-ray version, it’s
a pretty different movie.
M Magazine: Are there old movies that people will
rediscover because of Blu-ray?
Joe Lanzetti:Yes. There are movies that were epics in

were visually not as impressive at home as they
were in the theater. I do believe that Blu-ray will
bring out more of these movies.
