Topic: Portrait

EXHIBITION TITLE: ‘Force of Judgement’

MY INSPIRATION: ‘Thomas Ruff ’

My exhibition title is ‘Force of Judgement’. This exhibition will be a series of photographs that feature subjects who have all adopted expressionless and emotionless faces, and this forces you to make your own judgments about them, when all you have to go on is their appearance. The people in my pictures will be asked to try their hardest in showing as little emotion as possible. As much as they do this, the more assumptions the viewer will have to make. My title links back to this idea, and I think it fits really well.

I have been looking at a lot of Thomas Ruffs’ work for inspiration. Ruff is a German photographer who focuses on portraits, featuring subjects with expressionless and emotionless faces. The subjects are always against a bland background, and are often in black and white, creating a passport/mugshot style picture. The portraits force you to make your own judgements about the people involved, when all you have to go on is their appearance. This links back into my idea ‘Force of Judgement’.

TYPES OF SHOT:

These are the shot types I will be experimenting with…

-medium shot (shows some part of the subject in more detail while still giving an impression of the whole subject)-medium close up (half way between a medium shot and a close up shot)-extreme close up (gets right in and shows extreme detail)-over the shoulder (looking from behind a person at the subject)-long shot (this shot shows the entire human body, with the head near the top of the frame and the feet near the bottom. While the focus is on characters, plenty of background detail still emerges)

PHOTO LOCATIONS:

EXHIBITION LAYOUT:

My pictures will be taken in a variety of places around the school. I want to have plain or bland backdrops so I will use locations such as the photography studio and the brick walls of the science block. I also want to experiment with having the field in the background, but I’m not sure if this will play the same effect. Using the photography studio will also allow me to play with aspects such as lighting which will be a bonus.

IDEA 3:These are a few ideas of how my exhibition could be organised. All my photographs will be portrait and possibly with black borders around them. I think my favourite is the basic IDEA 2.
