    Background of the Industry

A printed circuit board, or PCB, is used to mechanically support and electricallyconnect electronic components using conductive pathways, or traces, etched from

copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. It is also referred to asprinted wiring board (PWB) or etched wiring board. A PCB populated withelectronic components is a printed circuit assembly (PCA), also known as a printedcircuit board assembly (PCBA).

The inventor of the printed circuit was the Austrian engineer Paul Eisler (19071995) who, while working in England, made one circa 1936 as part of a radio set.Around 1943 the USA began to use the technology on a large scale to make rugged

radios for use in World War II. After the war, in 1948, the USA released theinvention for commercial use.

Before printed circuits point-to-point construction was used. For prototypes, orsmall production runs, wire wrap or turret board can be more efficient.

Originally, every electronic component had wire leads, and the PCB had holesdrilled for each wire of each component. The components' leads were then passedthrough the holes and soldered to the PCB trace. This method of assembly is calledthrough-hole construction.

    MANUFACTURING PROCESS

    EXISTING PLANTPCB

MANUFACTURE OF SINGLE SIDE AND DOUBLE SIDED PCBThe simple technology for PCBs is single sided PCBs (which is still very popularin entertainment electronics and telephones) where circuit is also on one side andcomponent assembly and soldering on same side. As the design becomes morecomplex, the double sided PCBs are produced. Here there is one component sidewhere components with leads are mounted and solder side where components aresoldered. This is true for leaded components but with evolution of SMD designs, some components are soldered on both sides. This entirely depends on design. Thebasic raw materials used for PCB manufacturing is called copper clad laminateswhere copper foils are bonded with books of glass epoxy material on both the

sides. It is available in various thicknesses.

    13. LEGEND PRINT:14. PROFILE15. ELECTRICAL TEST16. QUALITY CHECK

    Explanation of the steps

    1. SHEARING:Here the laminates are sheared to standard panels.

    2. CNC DRILLING:In this process, the panels are stacked in three with top plate and bottom plate andformed like a book. These books are fixed in CNC drilling machines are holes aredrilled as per the Gerber data provided by the user.

    3. PLATED THROUGH HOLES:The drilled holes would have lost its continuity between top layer and bottomlayer. Hence they need to be interconnected. It is not possible to electroplatecopper on epoxy material and hence a process called electro less copper plating isused where with only chemical action initial 5 microns copper is built.

  • 7/30/2019 Final Project on Csil

    24/64

    24

    4. LAMINATION:A photo resist dry film is vacuum laminated using a Laminator after thoroulybrushing the surface of panel.

    5. EXPOSE/TRANSFER CIRCUIT IMAGE:Using a positive photo tool (which is already prepared in CAD section with respectto customer data) circuit is transferred to panel using ultra violet exposureequipment.

    6. DEVELOPING:This chemical process removes the unexposed photo resist in all areas where it isto be taken for electroplating. All other areas are covered with exposed resist.

    7. ELECTROPLATE COPPER:This is a electroplating process where 25 to 30 microns of copper is built onsurface of panels and as well has holes.

    8. ELECTRO PLATE TIN:In this process (which is done in the same line of copper plating) the circuits arecovered with tin which acts as etch resist during subsequent etching process.

    9. FILM STRIPPING:The photo resist is stripped by a conveyors machine chemically leaving exposedthe copper to be etched.

    10. TIN STRIPPING:In this process, the tin plating is removed from the top of circuitry by a strippingmachine chemically.

    11. SOLDER MASK:Solder mask operation is done to give insulation properties and also to avoid

bridging during soldering is carried out using a screen printing machine. Theboards are thoroughly cured in curing oven so that proper adhesion is achieved. Inthis operation generally only pad and land areas are not covered and the rest ofPanels are masked.

  • 7/30/2019 Final Project on Csil

    25/64

    25

    12. HOT AIR LEVELING:During this process the exposed pad and land areas are covered with solder coatingusing a hot air leveling m/c. In this machine panels are dipped in the molten solderbath vertically and while retracting hot air is impinged by two fronts to backnozzles to make surface even and to clear excess solder in holes.

    13. LEGEND PRINT:This is an operation done in screen printing to print the legend as per the given dataand subsequently cured.

    14. PROFILE:This is an operation done in CNC routing machine. Here the required size and

profile is generated using a programme previously generated in CAD.

    15. ELECTRICAL TEST:ET is an electrical test done for every single PCBs to test and certify tha t PCBmanufactured is ok as per Gerber data and the documents given by customer. Itchecks for continuity, shorts and insulation properties of produced PCBs. Bed ofnails method is used for through hole and simple SMD PCBs and for complexPCBs flying probe test machines are used.

    16. QUALITY CHECK:In this, all PCBs are checked with respect to drags and IPC specs and packed anddispatched.

    MANUFACTURING PROCESS - MULTILAYER PCBS

With emergence of more functions in a system, miniaturization of systems andequipments, more complex inter connectivitys it was not possible to accommodatesuch designs in double sided PCBs. Hence the concept of multi layer PCBsemerged. Here additional circuit layers are embedded between outer layers andInterconnections are built through visa.

    27

Generally there are 5 additional steps as listed below in addition to that of DoubleSided PCBs in manufacturing Multi Layer Boards. They are carried out precedingCNC drilling, except de smear process which is done after CNC drilling.

    1. Inner layer preparation2. Inner layer etching.3. Black oxide coating.4. Registration and layers bonding.5. De smears after CNC drilling.

Inner layer preparation:The thin core laminate is laminated with photo resist, circuit exposed anddeveloped using a negative photo tool and unexposed areas are removed bydeveloping.

Inner layer etching:The inner layer circuit thus prepared is directly etched in a mechanized machineand the circuitry is formed.

Black oxide coat:This is a plating operation done on the etched panels. This is done to facilitateproper bonding of layers during pressing.

Registration and layers bonding:The inner layer(s) such prepared are stacked and properly registered with aregistration system and taken to hot and cold press and bonding of layers arecarried out. This is an operation where the layers are bonded under hydraulicpressure with heat. After stipulated time it is allowed to cool under external watercool. A perfect bond/book is the key to good MLB.

De smear:This is an operation carried out in electro less copper plating line to remove any

epoxy smears formed during very high speed drilling preceding electro lessoperation. During very small hole drilling the speed of CNC drilling spindle mayreach 60 to 80,000 RPM which generates enormous heat. The heat thus generatedwill sometimes go beyond the melting temperature of epoxy and an epoxy smear isformed inside the holes which will prevent plating of holes. This chemical processwill clear such smeared epoxies

    Introduction

Marketing deals with identifying human and social needs. One of theshortest definitions of marketing is meeting needs profitably. Marketing is a

social process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and wantthrough creating, offering and free exchanging products and services of value withother. We see marketing management as art and science of choosing target marketand getting, keeping and growing customer through creating delivering andcommunicating superior customer value.

    What is marketing?

According to American marketing Association Marketing is anorganizational function and a sets of processes for creating communicating anddelivering values to the customer and for managing customer relationships in waysthat benefits the organization and its stack holders.

Marketing tends to be seen as a creative industry, which includesadvertising, distribution and selling. It is also concerned with anticipating thecustomers' future needs and wants, often through market research.

Essentially, marketing is the process of creating or reorganizing anorganization to be successful in selling a product or service that people not onlydesire, but are willing to buy.

For a marketing plan to be successful, the mix of the four "Ps" must reflectthe wants and desires of the consumers in the target market. Trying to convince amarket segment to buy something they don't want is extremely expensive andseldom successful.

    The Marketing Mix

The set of controllable, tactical marketing tools product, price, place andpromotion that the firm blends to produce response, it wants in the target market. The major marketing management decisions can be classified in one of thefollowing four categories:

    Product Price Place (distribution) Promotion

These variables are known as the marketing mix or the 4 P's of marketing. Theyare the variables that marketing managers can control in order to best satisfycustomers in the target market.

    4 P`s of Marketing

The marketers task is to devise marketing activities and assemble fully

integrated marketing programs to create, communicate and deliver value forconsumers. The marketing program consists of numerous decisions on value-enhancing marketing activities to use. Marketing activities come in all forms. Ontraditional depiction of marketing activities is in terms of marketing mix, whichhas been define as the set of marketing tools the firm used to pursue its marketingobjectives. McCarthy classified these tools into four broad groups, which he calledthe four Ps of marketing: product, price place and promotion.

    Product

It includes product variety, quality, design, features, brand name, packaging, sizes, services, warranties, returns

    Products of the company

The company is in the business of 3 types of PCB i.e. single sided, double sidedand multilayer.

    PROMOTION

Method of communicating with customer are varying from company tocompany. Sometimes company makes the promotion of its products by personalselling, social contracts, advertising through brand ambassador; publicity etc.

Promotion includes sales promotion, advertising, sales force, publicrelations, direct marketing.

CSIL is into manufacturing industrial grade printed circuit boards, Its customersare traditionally OEMs and Direct Users like Telecom companies, Defense,Medical Electronics, Instrumentation, power supply etc. To cater these segments, company uses various practices like Trade Shows, direct sales, referral, etc.

    PRICE

Price is the most important factor that affecting on the demand or product inmarket. Company determines policy regarding prices, discount, concession etc.

It includes list price, discounts, allowance, payment period, credit time, toincrease sale, one should always puts some scheme in price of product. Companyshould give some discounts on certain product for certain period.

In a very competitive market like Printed Circuit Boards, prices aregenerally governed by Markets and do not provide too much flexibility. Reliabilityis the only thing that determines a price. Company offers various prices slabs andcredit terms depending on many factors like volume, customer, and technology.

    PLACE

Policy regarding outlets for sales, channels of distributionlocation and layout of stores etc. place includes channels, coverage, assortment, locations, inventory, and transport.

Marketing includes many activities. From production of goods

till purchased by the customers. In order to supply the goods to the customer, themanagement depends on distribution system. If distribution system is not proper, the goods will not reach to the customer in time. This will create the dissatisfactionin the customer. So it is very important in marketing.
