Recognition of Work

• The book 'Liberty and Social Transformation' has been widely acclaimed.

Leading western scholars have commented on it.

∼ Prof. Harry Ruja, San Diego State Univ., California writes:

Dr. Chandrakala has sought out the most direct and explicit rejections of her

thesis without equivocation or evasion .... has succeeded in supporting her

position most persuasively. She reads Russell closely and carefully which his

critics always do not do.

∼ Dr. K.E. Garey, McMaster University, Canada writes :

Dr. Chandrakala's work shows qualities of clarity and insight which I have

rarely encountered in reading about Russell, or indeed about the other great

mind which have shaped our civilization. She has capably disposed of many

current opinions concerning Russell's attitudes and has substituted for them

a lucid, carefully crafted interpretation of her own, basing her conclusions

firmly upon a close and sensitive reading of Russell's most important works.

∼ Prof. Jean Bethke Elshtain, Chicago Univ., USA writes:

What Chandrakala has accomplished in this tightly argued volume is a

sustained brief on Russell's behalf against the detractors ....Chandrakala

convincingly argues .... Concludes her critical summary and interpretation of

Russell's work taking apart and reassembling his views on war, peace and

world Govt.... I commend her for her persistence.'

Page 11: Final Prof. Padia's CV update - Maharaja Ganga Singh ... · on M.K. Gandhi (October, 1997) Commented on three papers presented by distinguished scholars on the ... Malviya Ji” to

10

∼ Louis Greenspan, McMaster Univ. writes:

Dr. Chandrakala's work will revive interest in Russell's work as providing a

middle road between authoritarian communist systems and unbridled

capitalism. This will be a great task of the 21st Century.

∼ Kenneth Blackwell, Director, the Bertrand Russell Archives, Canada writes:

"Dr. Chandrakala..... Successfully applies Russell's principles to an analysis of

the profound social, political, and industrial problems facing modern

developing societies". Besides, leading scholars Prof. Rasheeduddin Khan,

Prof. Raghuveer Singh, Prof. Om Bakshi, Prof. G.S. Bhargawa, have also

acclaimed her work.

• Other Comments in Recognition of Prof. Padia’s Works

∼ Dr. Padia's contributions [are] challenging and illuminating. She has an

open and warm style that encourages discussion. Dr. Padia is particularly

adept at exploring the connections and tensions between Western liberal

political theory and Indian thought. Her work reveals the fruitfulness of a

mutual engagement between these two traditions of reflections. The faculty

and students in our department greatly appreciate the contributions Dr.

Padia made to our community of discourse during her visit here.

(Prof. Joseph Carens, Dept. of Political Science,

University of Toronto, Toronto, USA)

∼ I have developed a deep respect for the quality of her intellect, the skill with

which she expresses her ideas, both orally and in writing, the initiative and

spirit she displays in her scholarly ursuits, and the empathy she feels for

Russell's ideas.

(Prof. Harry Ruja, Prof. of Philosophy,

San Diego State Univ., USA)

∼ Dr. Padia's work on Russell's political philosophy seems to fill a lacuna in the

literature on Russell rather nicely.... This ... book is a success at most of what

the author sets out to ccomplish .... Padia raises substantive points, primarily

on Russell's view on impulse and on the comparison of Russell with Mill and

other liberal theorists.

(Dr. Wayne H. Stromberg, San Diego State Univ., USA)

∼ Chandrakala Padia is a well respected and widely reviewed political theorist.

I am familiar with her work and have the highest repsect for her abilities.

(Prof. Jean Bethke Elshtain, the Laura Spelman Rockfeller,

Professor of Social and Political Ethics, Chicago Univ.).

∼ I have known Dr. Padia since my arrival in Varanasi .... She is ... among the

most capable, personable, and sensitive scholars I have met in all of India.

Her published work which I have read is excellent, thought-provoking,

and well-researched. .... She applies her strong theoretical and

methodological insights to problems of the local level.... Personally, I think that Chandrakala Padia is a national treasure. She is clearly one of the

Page 12: Final Prof. Padia's CV update - Maharaja Ganga Singh ... · on M.K. Gandhi (October, 1997) Commented on three papers presented by distinguished scholars on the ... Malviya Ji” to

11

brightest, most humane and most knowledgeable individuals I have had the pleasure to meet in India.

USA).

Comments on Prof. Chandrakala Padia’s Works Dr. Chandrakala's work shows qualities of clarity and insight which I have rarely encountered in reading about Russell, or indeed about the other great minds which have shaped our civilization. She has capably disposed of many current opinions concerning Russell's attitudes and has substituted for them a lucid, carefully crafted interpretation of her own, basing her conclusions firmly upon a close and sensitive reading of Russell's most important works.

Dr. K.E. Garey, McMaster University, Canada Dr. Padia's contributions [are] challenging and illuminating. She has an open and warm style that encourages discussion. Dr. Padia is particularly adept at exploring the connections and tensions between Western liberal political theory and Indian thought. Her work reveals the fruitfulness of a mutual engagement between these two traditions of reflections. The faculty and students in our Department greatly appreciate the contributions Dr. Padia made to our community of discourse during her visit here.

Prof. Joseph Carens, Dept. of Political Science, University of Toronto, Toronto, USA

I have developed a deep respect for the quality of her intellect, the skill with which she expresses her ideas, both orally and in writing, the initiative and spirit she displays in her scholarly pursuits, and the empathy she feels for Russell's ideas.

Prof. Harry Ruja, Prof. of Philosophy, San Diego State Univ., USA

Dr. Padia's work on Russell's Political Philosophy seems to fill a lacuna in the literature on Russell rather nicely.... This ... book is a success at most of what the author sets out to accomplish .... Padia raises substantive points, primarily on Russell's view on impulse and on the comparison of Russell with Mill and other liberal theorists.

Dr. Wayne H. Stromberg, San Diego State University., USA Chandrakala Padia is a well respected and widely reviewed political theorist. I am familiar with her work and have the highest repsect for her abilities.

Prof. Jean Bethke Elshtain, the Laura Spelman Rockfeller, Professor of Social and Political Ethics, Chicago University

I have known Dr. Padia since my arrival in Varanasi .... She is ... among the most capable, personable, and sensitive scholars I have met in all of India. Her published works which I have read are excellent, thought-provoking, and well-researched. .... She applies her strong theoretical and methodological insights to problems of the local level.... Personally, I think that Chandrakala Padia is a national treasure. She is clearly one of the brightest, most humane and most knowledgeable individuals I have had the pleasure to meet in India.

Prof. ConstanceA. Jone, Director, California Institute of Integral Studies, USA
