Background & History

Siphon Diabetes Center is the recently built diabetes clinic & research center which is a provider of diabetes education. The Center was founded in 2010 in West Haven by Health Care students in the belief that the key to managing diabetes is with patient involvement, education and empowerment. It is located on the West Haven Center in West Haven, Connecticut. Siphon is unique in its sole focus on diabetes and has the best team of board-certified physicians treating diabetes and its complications, as well as the most skilled staff of Certified Diabetes Educators in the world.

Since its inception, Siphon has focused on aggressive, comprehensive care of the patient. Over 1500 active patients receive specialty care for their eyes, skin, heart, kidneys and feet.

Siphon supports its own diabetes research team with more than 10 faculty level investigators for a total of more than 20 researchers.

A team from Siphon surveyed in different areas of Connecticut where they found about 3000 patients with diabetes who were then trained to take care of their diabetes.

Definition of Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Under normal circumstances, it's made by beta cells that are part of a cluster of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas and regulates the level of glucose in the blood, preventing the level from going too high.

Diagnosis

In order to determine whether or not a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, we do, 1) Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) – if blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl signals pre-diabetes & blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher has diabetes 2) Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) - blood glucose level is measured after drinking a glucose-rich beverage. If the two-hour blood glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, has pre-diabetes & if the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, has diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

In 1980, WHO was classified diabetes by clinical classes that included type1 diabetes, type2 diabetes and other types associated with specific diseases and syndrome.

•Type I diabetes, formerly referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

•Type II diabetes, formerly called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

•Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy.

Medications

The first line treatment of type 2 diabetes is diet and exercise. If the blood glucose level remains high despite a trial of diet and exercise, use tablet (Glipizide, Gliclazide, Pioglitazone, Metformine etc.) to reduce the blood glucose level are usually advised. Insulin injections (Mixtard30, Actrapid + insulatard) are needed in some cases.

Siphon Diabetic Center considers an Information System as a necessary tool to success. This system helps the hospital provide its services easier, faster and more safely. For example, the center uses computers for its admissions process, updating patients’ information, contacting with insurance companies, scheduling appointments etc.

The center uses a collection of computing devices to share resources and facilitate communication, and we can describe the Network in Siphon Diabetic Center as a Local Area Network (LAN).

DIET PLAN:

Diet plays a significant role in controlling the diabetes.

Main objective of diabetic diet is to maintain ideal body weight, by providing adequate nutrition along with normal blood sugar levels in blood.
