Idea and its purpose The aim of the documentary is to inform

people about a very rare disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 male births/infants.

The purpose is to raise awareness of the stem and gene therapy treatment, by interviewing genetic researchers and looking into a day in life of a person who has the condition.

Conventions and Style It will be a biographical and informative

documentary because it will have both patient and health professionals.

It will be participant led so the audience are engaged in the documentary and they can relate their feelings more easily when the participant is directly telling information to the audience.

It will have semi structured interviews so the patient and the researcher knows what kind of information we are looking for but they will be able to elaborate on their answers.

Viability of the idea My idea is viable because the people I am

interviewing in my documentary are easy to access i.e. the patient and DMD organisation.

The locations I am using don’t need permission for filming i.e. the patient’s house and office of the researcher.

The documentary is cost effective because I don’t have to pay someone to make an appearance or I don’t have to pay for any locations or props to be used.

Target Audience The target audience for this

documentary will be 25-35 years old who are interested in knowing more about the condition.

It can also appeal to people with the condition or families of people with the condition because it will have information about the stem and gene therapy treatment.

Primary Research into Audience

Results of Primary Research

Secondary Research into market I looked at different documentaries on

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and found out that there are no documentaries that have health professionals explaining the condition, they only have the parents telling how they found out that there child has the condition and how they feel about it.

It tells me that having a health professional and the patient himself telling the audience will make my documentary different rom others.

How Research Developed my idea My initial idea was to make a documentary on motor

neuron diseases to raise awareness if the disease but as I started looking at similar documentaries for my secondary research I found out that there are a lot of documentaries on motor neuron disease covering all the aspects of it and If I was to make a documentary it wouldn’t be original.

After my secondary research, I decided to make the my documentary on DMD. My idea also developed after primary research because I decided to interview a doctor/expert in the documentary to tell us what causes the disease because 50% of the audience wanted to see both. This development was reinforced by my secondary research because none of the documentaries I looked at had any health professionals in it.

Budgeting According to the calculations it will cost me

approximately more then 30,000 to hire key personnel, equipment and editing software's.

However, I decided to be the producer and director of my documentary and I will be the person filming it.

I have decided to use the equipment I l already have i.e. camera, tripod, slider and mic. So I do not have to hire any equipment.

I will be using final cut pro which is already available to me.

For consultant, I will hire a media student who I will have to pay less.
