Final Paper / Supplementary Material [30 pts total]
Assignment The design project this term is closely tied to the CHI 2014 Student Design Competition and its topic: “BodyData: Designing for Qualities of the Quantified Self.” Your final paper assignment and presentation will therefore follow the guidelines for submitting the camera-‐ready paper and supplementary materials for the competition. The goal is to write an Extended Abstract (six pages maximum) that summarizes all the previous assignments you did on this project. The paper should be written in the Extended Abstracts format: http://chi2014.acm.org/authors/format#extendedformat
In addition, each team will be required to create the Supplementary Material document. Guidelines for creating each component are below.
Guidelines for Extended Abstract (15 pts):
Going back to the deliverables from your previous assignments (GHW1, GHW2, GHW3, and GHW4), extract the materials that will help you write the following:
• Project title and author information • A description of your chosen design focus and proposed solution, with a summary of the approaches taken
within your design process, and your main claims for your proposed solution. For example: o What was the goal of your design project? o What was the design problem(s) you were trying to solve? o Brief overview of the design process (deriving design requirements and method you used, users involved
throughout the design process, user needs analysis, prototyping…) • Reference to design principles, sources of inspiration, and HCI theory where appropriate and relevant. • Acknowledgement of partial or incomplete solutions. • Acknowledgement of any assistance drawn from outside the student team (advisors, faculty, domain experts,
existing solutions, users, etc.).
As you work on your final papers, please refer to the previous examples (successful submissions to this competition from previous conferences that are now included in the ACM Digital Library). These examples are posted on BB Learn under “Course Documents,” under “Assignment Guidelines.”
Guidelines for Supplementary Material (15 pts):
This supplementary material should be submitted as an interactive pdf file, with a file-‐size no larger than 4Mb.
Please include the following:
• Examples of significant contextual data and its analysis (primary, secondary research or both) • Key creative sources of design inspiration (existing designs and systems) • Sketches of the evolving solution • Imagery (as appropriate) to illustrate the design solution • Significant evaluation data in support of claims in the extended abstract
Tips and guidelines for creating sketches and imagery illustrating the design solution:

• Consider design aspects adhering to best HCI design practices: o Features should be mapped out with clear indication of how they function o Screens should match users’ goals o Good use of labels o Clear feedback o Consistency and standards throughout UI
• If used, annotations should explain the tasks, steps, and how user moves from one step to another. • Make sure you address the comments you received in class during design critique session • Make sure you fixed the key problems you found in your user study (there needs to be clear/visible evolution
from your initial prototypes)

2. Supplementary material should be submitted as an interactive pdf file, with a file-‐size no larger than 4Mb
3. Individual Contributions Breakdown should be submitted via email to [email protected] for each group
Each group should provide an itemized list of team members’ contributions to the components of the final paper and supplementary materials document. If several students contributed to the same component, quantify, as a percentage, each student's contribution to this component.
