MOVIE TRAILER – THRILLER/HORROR

Page 3: Final major project ideas moodboards

Setting:

The Setting would depend on the type of trailer however, if I was making a Thriller/Horror Trailer, the setting could be in a isolated place such as a Forrest, an isolated place like this would be a good way to trigger fear for the viewers.

A Convention of a Horror Movie is that the main events take place at night. This is another trigger for fear. If the setting is dark the viewer instantly thinks something is going to happen which then gives them the edge of their seat feeling. Other conventions of a horror film is a haunted house, the houses are usually deserted and/or very old which indicates that they have some history to them. Having the setting in a Haunted House can also bring the paranormal side of horror into the film.

Other settings could include Grave Yards, Underground and Caves.

Characters:Antagonist - The Antagonist is the main ‘Bad Guy’ of the Movie, this character is the character that will hold the storyline of the film and will be causing all of the problems. In a horror film the character will typically be very mysterious throughout the film, we wont get to know the character, they are their to scare us. The character will usually look scary with hair in their face, blood on their clothes, wearing a mask etc. Typical Antagonists in horror Movies are:

- Ghosts (Paranormal Activity) - Psychopath (Halloween)- Stalkers (Just Before Dawn) - Zombies (Resident Evil, Dawn Of The Dead) - Serial Killers (The Call Movie)- Kidnapper (Hush)

Protagonist – The main character of the film, the ‘Good Guy’ the movie will focus mostly on this particular characters experience throughout the movie. As a twist to the end of the movie the main protagonist sometimes dies or loses. This done as a way to shock the viewers as they wouldn’t expect it to happen. An example of where this happens is in the movie ‘The Skeleton Key’ If there is a group of people involved in the movie, a lot of them will die throughout , a common way to end the movie is by using a popular convention known as ‘The Last Girl’ This is seen in the movie ‘Descent and Train’

Camera Angles: Camera Angles are important in Horror Films. Numerous shots are used. A high angle shot in a perspective style would be good when the victim has fallen down, this triggers fear as the victim seems defenceless and we can see through either persons eyes. Low angle shot for the Antagonist and high angle for the protagonist. Canted camera angles/filming is also good to use in horror. An example of a film that uses this is ‘The Blair Witch Project’ This makes the movie seem as though the film is shot entirely on a hand held camera. Using this is a good way to make the viewers concentrate harder on the film which then leaves an opportunity to scare them. Using close ups cuts everything else out of the frame so the audience would be easily scared if a hand for example was to enter the camera frame it would make the audience Jump. Other camera angles could include: Wide Shots, Birds Eye View, Over The Shoulder, Extreme Close Ups etc.

Sound:The Sounds in Horror/Thriller Movies/Trailers are important, the music in trailers creates suspense. A soundtrack should be used in the trailer as well as diegetic and non-diegetic sounds such as Heart Beats and Sound Effects.
