Gunnedah High School's Year 12 class of 2018 came together for the last time on Thursday, November 15.

With the HSC already fading into memory, the graduates dressed up for their formal at the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club.

Year advisor Simone Carlyon shared some last words with the students who graduated this year.

“You have worked hard, completed all of your exams and this is your very last Gunnedah High School function,” she said.

“It is probably hard to believe that you have finished.”

Mrs Carlyon said for the past six years, their teachers had tried to impress the school motto of “respect, responsibility and doing your best” onto the students.

“I can assure you that living your life with these three values in mind will be an asset in future career development, relationships and your own personal well-being,” she said.

“Over the past six months the assembly revamp of both the Australian Anthem and our school song – Sempter Optime – with Mr Heath leading the charge, reminds us to remember where we have come from and to always stand proud.

“It always brought a smile to my face seeing particularly Year 12 students embracing this with vigor at our assemblies.

“I know you will all channel your own super-hero when it is needed to get you through future challenges in life.”

Major awards were also presented on the night (see page 3).

GHS FAIR'18

Gunnedah High School’s grounds were transformed for its annual fair on Friday, November 9.

Hundreds passed through the gates to meet friends and participate in the new Ninja Warrior course, and novelty events, including Bat the Rat, Gumboot Toss, Ball Drop and Poker Chip Toss.

There was also a dunking machine, pillow fights, photo booth, jumping castle, face painting and food and drink stalls.

High school teacher and fair committee member Adam Mooney said there was a “good turn-out” in the fair’s second year.

“The atmosphere was fan-tastic,” he said.

“It was great to see such a wide section of the com-munity come to support and engage in the activities.

“The Ninja Warrior course was one of the highlights of the night, with plenty of peo-ple trying their luck to win the cash prizes."

Mr Mooney said another highlight was a live per-fomance by Darwin band VanderAa, which has played at Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival and Burning Man.

“The band was excellent,” he said.

“The crowd really got into it

and it was a great way to finish out the night."

Mr Mooney said the funds raised at the fair would go to the P&C.

“We are very grateful for the support of the local commu-nity,” he said.

The fair will now become a biennial event.

Gunnedah High School stu-dents have participated in two hoof and hook cattle shows this term. The Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza at Scone and Northern Schools Prime Live-stock Competition at Inverell.

Mid November saw us take five students and two steers to Inverell for a two-day event. Thirty-three schools from across the North-West and New England areas were in attendance for this event. Students participated in edu-cational workshops and Junior Judging and Parading. Tiffany Alderson, Ashleigh Mills and Lucy Moore were all selected to do an oral presentation for Junior Judging. Tiffany placed 1st and Lucy and Ashleigh were placed equal 4th in an

extremely competitive Year 11 and 12 age division. Both Ash-leigh Mills and Kurt Rennick made it through to the finals in their respective age groups for Paraders.

On the final day the steers were judged. Our two steers were in the biggest class with 20 steers. Captain was placed 6th in this class which was an extremely pleasing result considering the calibre of the competition.

Thanks to Mr Philip Tydd and Mrs Sharon Tydd for these two Angus cross steers.

Without Mr Tydd's help and dedication, as our Gunnedah High School Farm Assistant, these steers would not get to these competitions.– Mrs Dwyer

eIMEx EXPO

Year 9 and Year 10 students attended the Energy, Innovation and Mining Expo (eIMEx) on Friday, November 2 to hear from guest speakers about possible career opportunities for students to enter the mining sector. They explained the various jobs that are available and what is involved. It was an insightful learning experience for all who attended.

As a part of their unit on Food Businesses and Cater-ing, Year 10 Food Technology undertook a huge task of designing a menu suitable for this prestigious event. Staff were invited to purchase platters that students pre-pared and the final result was a mouth-watering assortment of fresh seafood, savoury and delectable desserts.

Students amazed them-selves with what they achieved on the day and staff were impressed with the ser-vice and range of food items created.

Congratulations Year 10 on managing your first function.

MELBOURNE CUP LUNCH

On Monday, November 19 Year 11 students par-ticipated in workshops by Elevate. Elevate workshops are presented by university students who have recently faced and aced high school themselves.

Presenters are energetic, speak the same language as students, and get them thinking about study skills from a fellow student's per-spective.

Elevate conducts rigorous research each year to work out what the top students are actually doing, to make sure students get simple, practical and effective skills in our workshops.

This year the workshops consisted of Study Sensei and Time Management.

The Study Sensei seminar breaks down the study tech-

niques of the top students, providing students with a road-map for what work they need to be doing across the year and how to do it. Skills covered included working consistently, note taking, conceptual learning skills, standing out on assessment and how to distinguish one-self from the thousands of other students being taught the same material.

The Time Management seminar addressed the sec-ond most common question: “Once I know what to do, how do I find the time to do it?” Students have busy lives and for most the challenge is simply finding time to get the work done.

Skills covered include study routines, working smart, study groups, and procrastination.

On Friday, August 24 Zak Turnbull and I (Desmond Tuckerman) went on a trip to ADFA in Canberra for their annual open day and experienced various aspects of army, navy and air force training and life.

Along with our Careers Adviser, Mrs Sanson we joined a group of students from Tamworth schools and travelled by bus from Tamworth to Newcastle. In Newcastle we had a brief presentation from a Defence Force Recruitment officer who also informed us what to expect at ADFA open day.

After an early start on Saturday we travelled to Canberra and arrived at 11am. The bus trip was a bit long but it was worth the wait when we arrived at ADFA.

We walked around their campus look-ing at the many clubs they had to offer while also admiring their armoured vehi-cles, equipment and helicopters. There were many stalls and people handing out information and pamphlets, giving us plenty of food for thought regarding options for study and participation in the wider ADFA community. We discovered there was a club or group for almost any activity or sport you could think of, each of us finding something interesting.

Around midday we watched some rugby at the football fields. It was inter-esting to watch two teams of people studying at ADFA (‘Artisans vs Engineers’).

Ceremonial displays on the parade ground during the day included marching bands, dog handling and parachuting.

We ended the day with a lecture that explained what it was like to study and work in the defence force.

Overall the trip was well worth it and has enlightened and motivated me in whatever I do. – Desmond Tuckerman

Gunnedah High School have secured a member of the Family Referral Service (FRS) to work on-site at school for three days dur-ing Term 4.

The FRS brings together families, support services and community resources so that children and young people are safe and well.

The FRS work with all services to find out what best supports young peo-ple and families and their children, and what can be done to improve commu-nity resources.

If you are a young person or family with children, or an extended family mem-ber, FRS will listen to your needs and refer you to the right service.

This service can provide advice on the agencies that could benefit your child’s development as well as assistance in making appointments and/or writ-ing and submitting referrals for your child.

This is a fantastic oppor-tunity for parents to gain knowledge of the various agencies available and make contact with them.

If you would like to make an appointment with Toni from the Family Referral Service, please contact her on 1800 597 589 or call the GHS Front Office on 6742 0155 for more information.

GUNNEDAH HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mr Ken White Relieving Principal

FUN TIMES AT THE FAIRIt was great catching up with everyone at the Fair. It was a tribute to the work of Mr Mooney and his team. The various stalls were busy most of the night, but it seems that the doughnut and fairyfloss stalls were the major earner on the night. My turn in the dunking machine allowed for an even-up for some people and The Nin-ja Warrior course proved to be a hit. The visiting band VanderAa were also a great success, and we thank Sewa Emojong, our Gunnedah Shire Youth Worker for her efforts with this. The pictures on our Facebook page and this newsletter will attribute to how successful the event was.

FAREWELL MRS JOHNSTONMrs Johnston moves to her new position of Head Teacher Teaching and Learning at Kandos High next week. I wish her well and acknowledge that she will be greatly missed here at Gunnedah High. Mrs John-ston has worked tirelessly at this school on supporting her faculty, building opportunities for students in Vocational subjects and allowing for the practical application of Hospitality skills with the Café Optime program, just to list a few of the many things she has been lead-ing at the school. Mrs Johnston has also been an invaluable supporter of the P&C, being heavily involved in assisting with fundraising events. Mrs Johnston also ran the HSIE Faculty and was our school Vocational Education coordinator. Quite honestly I don’t know where she found the time to do all the things that she has done. Her passion for the best outcomes for students, along with the ability to assess and assist those who needed extra

support, is amazing. I hope Kandos High appreciates how lucky they are.

As a counter to this sad news, It is with great pleasure I can announced that Mr Gough has been appointed to our perma-nent staff on the TAS Faculty.

YEAR 12 FORMALIt was an honour to attend the Year 12 formal last week and celebrate the successes of that wonderful group of people. It was also a privilege to share the Principal’s speech with Mr Kelly, who had started at the school at the same time as that cohort. Congratulations to the many award winners of the evening and good luck to all of Year 12, 2018!

PLAYGROUNDOn a more serious note, the school exec-utive and I have had to deal with some concerning examples of social conflict. The concerning thing was the number of bystanders actively encouraging or promoting conflict in the playground. Accordingly, as I had warned previously, I have been using the school discipline code to enforce not only physical conflict, but also cases of verbal conflict, harass-

ment and vilification in the playground. I have also enforced the school discipline code to impose consequences of nega-tive bystander behaviour, where students have been actively encouraging and promoting violence. The most annoying fact is that much of this conflict has been brought into school from events outside school hours. As I have told the students leave “stuff” from outside school at the gate. We are all part of a school com-munity with great potential and many successes and we need to work together to achieve our best!

P&C MEETINGOur final P&C meeting for 2018 will be held at the CourtHouse Hotel on Tuesday, November 27 from 6.30pm. The meeting will be held in the function room before a meal together for anyone that would like to stay on. I look forward to seeing you there!
