About The music of New Mexico-based singer-songwriter BorisMcCutcheon is rooted in country and traditional folk andblues songs, but has long defied even those genres.McCutcheon (b. November 21, 1969-- ) grew up in ruralHolliston,MassachusettsandintheElizabethIslandsoffthecoast of Cape Cod. Before entering the music industry,McCutcheonattendedMarlboroCollegeinVermontwherehestudiedcreativewriting.HealsoattendedtheprestigiousFarm and Garden Program at UC Santa Cruz, where helearned practical organic farming. Before leaving NewEngland for California, McCutcheon had encountered thelegendary folk musicologist and mandolin player RalphRinzler,whomadeadeepimpressiononhim.Atthattime,McCutcheonwasdiscoveringhisidentityasasongwriterandguitarist.OnaroadtripacrosstheWest,McCutcheonalsodiscoveredNewMexico.ButhelefttheWestattheendof20th century and returned to the East Coast to launch hismusic career. He assembled a roots rock band, andperformedhis firstgigattheCaptainKiddinWoodsHole,MA., and quickly moved into the prestigious folk-rootsscene in Boston. He became a regular, appearing on thestagesofClubPassim,theLizardLounge,theMiddleEast,and the Cantab. McCutcheon released his first albumMotherDitch(2001)whichwasproducedandengineeredbyPeteWeiss (AimeeMann,VaporsofMorphine).Bothpressand fans took notice of his unique songs, voice, andarrangements (with tuba, Moog, Wurlitzer, megaphone),andhegarneredaninstant,ifsmall,fanbaseonbothcoasts.He released his sophomore album When We Were Big(2003) produced and engineered by Craig Schumacher(Calexico,NekoCase)atWavelabStudiosinArizonaandwonBestMaleSingerSongwriterfromtheBostonMusicAwardsthefollowingyear.ItwasatthistimethathewasdiscoveredbyLuckyDiceMusic/LDMBookingsintheNetherlands,runbySandraZuidemaandLucianoMulder,establishedbrokersand curators of Americanamusic in Europe. Zuidema andMulduralsorunapremiereonlinerecordstorepromotingAmericana artists to European audiences. McCutcheon’sbandBoris&theSaltLicksbegantotourthroughHolland,BelgiumandGermanyeachyearandimmediatelyfoundahome in the LDM stables, alongside other favorite artistsGreg Trooper, Rod Picott, Frazey Ford, Dayna Kurtz andmany others. With a cult hero reputation in Europe, andselling out large and small venues,McCutcheonmoved toNew Mexico, and made a permanent home there. Heconsolidated his core band, and with the Salt Licks (BrettDavis,SusanHolmes,KevinZoernig,PaulGroetzinger)beganrecording at Santa Fe’s Frogville Studios, a boutique indiehouseforalternativeandtraditionalAmericanamusic.

About (cont’d) The first album out of Frogville by Boris & The Salt Licks wasCactusmanvs.TheBlueDemon(2006).Thealbumwasproducedandmixed by Boris and piano savant Kevin Zoernig, whose keyboardarrangements brought some intensive jazzy improvisations toMcCutcheon’s unique compositions. Cactusman debuted at #1 ontheEuroAmericanaChart,andstayedinthetoptenformorethansixmonths.OntheotherEuropeanchartofnote,Americana&RootsTop13,basedonairplay,internet,salesanddownloads,everyoneofMcCutcheon’salbumshasenteredandstayedinthetopten.AfterCactusman, McCutcheon and the Salt Licks were in demand allaroundtheuptownanddowntowntheatres,barsandbreweriesofNew Mexico. McCutcheon, now living off-the-grid near Ojo Sarcowithamilemarkerasanaddress,startedafarmandafamilywithhiswife,LauraMcInerney.Inthisperiod,everygigstartedwithanhour-longdrivealongthehighroadtoTaos,throughcanyonsandcone-shapedhills, and finally to the state road and through theCarsonNational Forest to reach a highway. During the years from 2006-2012, McCutcheon released his “off-the-grid trilogy”: Bad Road,GoodPeople (2008)TheWheelofLife(2010),andtheblockbusterfinaleMightCrash!(2013).Inadditiontothese,hemadeacoupleofpraisedcompilationalbums,a livealbumfromtheNetherlands,anEP,amusicvideo,andabootlegacousticsoloalbumofTownesVanZandtcoversongs,recordedfromthecreakycarseatthatservedastheonlychairintheshed.Atthe2007NMStateFair,McCutcheonwonthestate’scovetedBestSingerSongwriteraward.Commercially,hehashadanumberofhissongslicensedasbothsourcemusicandfeaturecuesontelevisionandradiodramas.NPR’sClickandClack(Car Talk) couldn’t stop laughing and playing his song “Pilgrim” –about aman’s dying old truck.
