Patient Satisfaction Update
As previously noted, the latest Performance Pay tracking period began on July 1st. We have been tracking to just meet the Patient Satisfaction goal of ≥ 68% rating their experience as “Excellent”. In order to create a more comfortable margin of performance and to continue to improve the patient experience, we would like to share some feedback from recent patient focus groups. Two areas that patients value are: Communication from the treating crew “Explain treatment options and procedures” “Provide reassurance and compassionate communication with patient” Setting clear expectations “ Set transport length expectation” “ Set a triage level expectation before arriving at the hospital”

currently seeking designs for new patches to correlate with each certification level. These designs should represent each of the proposed new certification levels; Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), and Paramedic.
A committee with representation from some of our various stakeholders has been asked to assist with this process. We would like to engage the entire EMS Community in this process; therefore designs will be accepted on the NCOEMS website (www.ncems.org) from August 15th 2014 through September 15th 2014. We will have several designs chosen by the committee on display at Emergency Medicine Today ’14 in Greensboro
The North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS) is preparing for the implementation of new EMS certification levels. These levels are included in the revisions proposed to North Carolina Administrative Code, which was approved for the rulemaking process by the EMS Advisory Council on August 12, 2014. We anticipate codification of these rules by the 3rd quarter of 2015. In order to make this transition, we are
from October 4th – 8th. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to view the designs and vote for their preference. We will also allow those not able to attend EM Today the opportunity for input on the NCOEMS website. Prize(s) will be awarded to the designer of the winning pattern(s).
All designs submitted must contain a minimum of the following in the design; “Star of Life” and “North Carolina”. We will accept single patch templates with different wording for each certification level, certification rockers, and/or different designs for each level. Personnel may submit multiple designs. No duplicate trademarked designs are allowed. Visit www.ncems.org for more details about how to submit all proposals.
Philips Monitor Reminder
Recently a small number of Philips MRX Cardiac Monitors have been discovered with their batteries almost completely discharged. As a reminder, please return the Philips monitors back to the wall mounted charging brackets when not in use. Returning the unit to the wall mount is for important several reasons:
These brackets are test rated to withstand a 20G+ crash which means having the monitor on the wall could prevent injury/damage in the event of a crash.
Now that the monitors are mounted to the walls, this is the only means of charging the batteries have. Logistics no longer replaces batteries and trucks may be immediately redeployed.
While the Philips MRX Cardiac Monitor is in use, it should perform as follows;
Monitoring Only: The batteries provide at least 9 hours of ECG monitoring
Monitoring and Shocks: At least 5 hours of monitoring with ECG, SpO2, CO2, temperature and 2 invasive pressures monitoring continuously, NBP measured every 15 minutes and 20 200-joule discharges
Quick Charging — The Philips batteries can quickly charge to their full capacity because they do not require an extended trickle charge. The battery takes approximately 2 hours to reach 80% of its capacity and 3 hours to achieve a fully charged state from a fully discharged state. Simply put, if left in the charging wall mount, they should obtain their maximum potential without difficulty in most circumstances.

Medic celebrated another great patient reunion, on August 18th. Mr. Pacella went into cardiac arrest while playing tennis at Freedom Park on July 16th. A bystander called 911, Emergency Medical Dispatcher Michael Sheriff coached the caller to instruct additional bystanders on how to perform CPR. Charlotte Fire Department and Medic arrived shortly to the scene. Mr. Pacella is a survivor today due to

Building Bridges Scholars Enrichment Summer Camp came to Medic to learn more about Paramedics & EMT’s. They toured an ambulance, learned about the different certification levels, and explored the special operations assets. Their teachers report that the kids had a great time and they couldn’t stop talking about all the great things they saw at Medic! Thank You to Josh Stiller from Special Operations for showing them around.
