At 12 PM January 20 Chile Time (9 PM January 20

Beijing Time), the Dakar 2013 wrapped up in Santiago,

capital of Chile. The HAVAL Dakar Racecars steered by

Sousa and Zhou Yong rolled slowly by the closing

platform, drawing attention from car fans and the media.

Haval Dakar Team achieved the same results as last year,

with Sousa placing 6th and Zhou Yong 19th.

Following the Dakar 2013, David Castera, deputy general

manager of ASO and sporting director of the Dakar Rally,

highly acclaimed the performance of HAVAL Dakar

Racecars this year, “Haval Dakar Team performs well

overall this year. Its performance was not good at first

due to the intention to maintain a moderate pace to finish

every stage smoothly, but the result turned out to be

good. I don’t know if they are satisfied with their perfor-

mance, but I think they were good.”

It is foreseeable that Haval Dakar Team should make

breakthrough instead of duplicating the past in the Dakar

2014. At this point, the team’s outstanding performance

this year has passed such information beyond doubt.

HAVAL Dakar Team continues success

The result list of the top 10 in Dakar 2013

The Haval Dakar Team finished 6th in the overall standings, placing in the top 10 among the big names like BMW and Toyota.

At 6 PM on January 12th Argentina Time (5 AM January 13th,

Beijing Time), stage 8 of the Dakar Rally concluded. The

organizing committee terminated the competition of the day

due to torrential rain. Except the top three in the stage

rankings the others will be tallied as the fourth. In the case, the

overall rankings almost remain unchanged with Sousa and

Zhou Yong placed 10th and 22nd respectively.

Stage 8 was divided into two timed sections. It was delayed

due to the fact that many segments were flooded by torrential

rain during the first timed section. Due to the fact that even

heavier rain occurred after some competitors had finished the

stage, the organizing committee terminated the competition

due to safety concerns.

However, their final results are yet to be determined by the

Due to torrential rain stage 8 of the Dakar Rally was terminated by the organizing committee

organizing committee. Despite of the short break, the team

chose not to relax but instead carefully check the two

racecars. Both Sousa and Zhou Yong expressed gratitude to

the hard-working logistics teams.

“I feel a heavy committment as a competitor. We are being

supported by many crew members who work very hard

behind-the-scenes, so we feel that we are not only competing

for ourselves, but also for the whole team,” Sousa said. On this

point, the Dakar Rally is really an all-out war for every team.

This year, in addition to two racecars, the Haval Dakar Team

fielded one T4 rescue truck, three T5 logistics trucks, one

press vehicle, one working vehicle, and a service team

comprised of 17 members. In order to complete the race

smoothly, the Haval Dakar Team has made full preparations.

1.05-1.20During the Dakar Rally

By 6 PM January 14 Argentina Time (5 AM January 15 Beijing Time), HAVAL

Dakar Team had finished Stage 9. Sousa finished 6th with 05:46:51, moving

into the top six of the overall standings; Zhou Yong came in 21st with

06:25:37, ranked 20th in the overall standings.

Roma took his second stage champion with 05:36:28 in the 2013 Dakar Rally

by 00:04:41 over Peterhansel and 00:06:54 over Terranova. In the overall

standings, Peterhansel was on top with 24:11:43, De Villiers ascended to

second, and Novistkiy and Roma ranked 3rd and 4th.

Stage 9 saw sharp turns and high temperature, which made competition more

difficult. Zhou Yong was once 11th, but his car rolled over on hitting a stone. With

the help of a passing motorcyclist, he straightened his car and continued, but lost

a dozen minutes. Were it not for the rollover, he would have achieved record

results of Chinese competitors. Despite the turnover, he stabilized his pace and

finished this stage in 21st and 20th in the overall standings.

Stage 9 marks the beginning of the second half of Dakar Rally. Every team has

little time, but every competitor stands a chance of achieving good results as

long as he holds on, just as Dong Ming, director of HAVAL Dakar Team, said,

“Challenges and opportunities always coexist in the Dakar Rally.”

1.05-1.20During the Dakar Rally

By 6 PM January 15 Argentina Time (5 AM January 16

Beijing Time), HAVAL Dakar Team has finished Stage 10.

In this stage, Sousa finished 12th with 04:21:36,

securing 6th in the overall standings; and Zhou Yong

ascended to 17th with 04:25:37, still overall ranking

20th.

Terranova aboard BWM took his first stage champion

with 03:57:58 in the 2013 Dakar Rally by 00:02:07 over

Roma and 00:02:19 over Peterhansel. In the overall

standings, Peterhansel remained on top with 28:12:00,

followed by De Villiers with a gap 00:52:38, and

Novistkiy ranked 3rd.

This stage was easy to the competitors. Sousa was

once 5th neck and neck with Peterhansel and Roma,

Zhou Yong achieved record result, Sousa secures 6thovertook Peterhansel to lead the stage after getting through

Point WP4, but unfortunately lost some 30 minutes due to his

car failure at the 125th kilometer and eventually finished 12th.

Zhou came in 17th, his best rank in the 2013 Dakar Rally

instead of 18th in Stage 3. After returning to the camp, Zhou

expressed his satisfaction, saying, “I feel I am lucky today and

will maintain the momentum in future stages, because any

mistake will have a heavy price towards the end of the rally.”

January 16 Argentina Time will see Stage 11, in which the

competitors will run from La Rioja to Fiambala, covering a

road section of 262 kilometers and a special section of 219

kilometers. Deserts will reappear, plaguing the stage with car

“sinking” and engine “overheat”. At this point, the “seemingly

hospitable” dune zone is likely to frighten the competitors.

By 6 PM January 16 Argentina Time (5 AM January 17 Beijing

Time), Stage 11 of the 2013 Dakar Rally concluded. In this

stage, Sousa finished 8th with 00:56:16, securing 6th in the

overall rankings, and Zhou Yong finished 15th with 01:01:28,

placing 21st in the overall rankings.

Gordon won this stage with 00:50:21, followed by Chabot

with 00:51:29 and Alvarez with 00:52:38. In the overall

rankings, Peterhansel remained in the lead, ahead of De

Villiers and Roma.

Stage 11 stretching from La Rioja to Fiambala is a stage

mixing desert, sandstone and earth. Flash flooding appeared

simultaneously at the 69th kilometer and 85th kilometer. For

the sake of safety, the organizing committee halted this stage

at the first checkpoint after the 84th kilometer. Finally, the top

21st place.

“My goal for the 2013 Dakar Rally is to break my record 12th

place in the end,” Zhou Yong said in a previous interview.

According to his competition state after the rest day, he has

come closer to his goal. After finishing 17th in Stage 10, he

moved two places up to 15th, just a step away from his goal.”

Sousa was dashing in the second half, and aimed to achieve

a breakthrough in the overall rankings. “I adjusted myself to

the car and stage in the first half, and in the second half, I

have got used to it and improved my control ability. I hope to

dash for a new overall record.”

finished. Sousa finished 7th with 03:46:32, securing 6th

overall; and Zhou Yong finished 10th with 03:59:22,

Roma won this stage with 03:36:34, followed by Gordon

with 03:40:52, De Villiers was 3rd. In the overall stand-

ings, Peterhansel remained on top, ahead of De Villiers

and Roma.

Stage 12 was climbing over the Andes from east to west,

returning to the Atacama Desert from Paso San

dunes were the top problem faced by the competitors,

and dense sandstones greatly slowed cars. Despite

those troubles, Sousa and Zhou Yong of Haval Dakar

gave full play to their advantages in the desert stage.

Zhou was most eye-catching who came in record 10th with

03:59:22, against his personal stage best 12th in the Dakar

2013. “I have achieved the goal of moving up from 12th and

my next goal is to achieve the same stage result as Sousa’s,”

he said. In this stage, he hit the road in 15th, took a slight

lead at first and even placed around 20th, but came back in

the second half and surpass many cars to finish 10th. Sousa

moved up a bit, only 00:09:58 behind Roma.

January 18 Chile Time will see Stage 13 in which the

competitors will run from Copiapo to La Serena, covering a

road section of 294 kilometers and a special section of

441 kilometers. With sandy paths making up one third of

the course, the stage will offer the competitors another

opportunity to fight it out. In the last section of this stage,

the competitors will run south all the way on open paths,

but they should be careful of those hidden “dream-

meant that he achieved record stage results amongst Chinese

competitors. Following the Rally, Zhou said, “Our good perfor-

cars after each stage, and the logistics team offered competitors

the best logistics support. A common saying that goes around in

Dakar rung true - ‘Teams win with skills and services’.”

The awarding and closing ceremony is scheduled to take place

in Santiago on January 20th Chile Time (night of January 20th

View the Dakar Rally from another perspective – mass production cars escort racecarsDeserts, wildernesses, Gobi and steep mountains, all of these

features make the Dakar Rally truly deserving of the title “the game for

the brave”. During the fierce competition, obviously the racecars of all

the teams are most striking. However, behind their dazzling splendor

is an array of various escorting vehicles - the logistics vehicles.

1.05-1.20Mass-produced vehicles

Page 12: Final Dakar Update

Despite the fact that they only travel along the

ordinary track, the logistics vehicles also face a

similarly complex environment. They have to

cross the boundless Atacama Desert and

climb over the steep Andes. These obstacles

create a great challenge which tests the quality

of the logistics vehicles. The Haval Dakar Team

– now making its fourth appearance at the

Dakar Rally - has a strong logistics lineup

following close behind. It is composed of one

rescue truck, three logistics trucks, as well as

two logistics working vehicles (Haval H5 and

Wingle 5 which are all non-refitted mass

production vehicles).

Since the beginning of the Dakar Rally,

Haval H5 and Wingle 5 have run from Lima

(Peru) into Argentina via Chile. They have

covered over 5,000 kilometers and have

operated extremely well without experienc-

ing any problems. In particular, during the

climb over the Andes at an altitude of 4,800

meters, the steep gradient and endless

sharp turns were able to fully demonstrate

the outstanding maneuverability and

dynamics of both Haval H5 and Wingle 5.

Let’s congratulate our friend Mr.Milciades Fretes Rubiani! He finished the Dakar with extraordinary mettle

and perseverance, and achieved brilliant results. He is a hero and our pride.

Competing in and finishing the Dakar, or achieving brilliant results is the dream of everyone fond of competi-

tion. But you need mettle first, and more importantly, you must have a racecar standing severe competition.

Look at our friend Mr.Milciades Fretes Rubiani, who finished the Dakar by driving our Wingle 3!

This is the most important game in my life!

Wingle pickup overcame the harshness of the Dakar.

Wingle 3’s outstanding performance and off-road power was fully displayed. This is the

pride of our Paraguayan distributor Milciades Fretes Rubiani, the pride of Great Wall Motor

and the pride of millions of Wingle customers. Wingle’s performance was tested through the

Dakar, which is a superb promotion of Wingle brand.

Looking back at the past Dakar Rallies, the average completion rate is less than 40 percent.

However, under the same rigorous racing conditions Mr.Milciades Fretes Rubiani drove our

Wingle 3 and conquered the toughest race in the world. This has been the breakthrough for

both brand promotion of Wingle Pickup and realization of his personal dream. We have

every reason to believe that more and more people will get fond of Wingle pickup through

watching the Dakar Rally for days.

Page 15: Final Dakar Update

On January 18 Chile Time, the Dakar journey of

experience kicked o. The event featured the

participation of 17 overseas distributors and 22

overseas journalists from Russia, South Africa

and Chile etc.

Watching rally came rst. A team composed of

the distributors and journalists, a Haval Dakar

replica, and 12 Wingle 5 pickups arrived at the

site at 11 AM to watch the rally. After seeing

HAVAL Dakar Racecars No. 308 and 322 speed

past, the distributors all gave thumbs up and

captured the impressive moment with their

cameras.

At noon, Haval Dakar Director Dong Ming

and the Chinese journalists headed for the

site to meet with overseas distributors and

watch the rally. During the event, the

domestic and overseas journalists got to

test-drive the Haval Dakar replica. They then

exchanged ideas about the outstanding

performance of the HAVAL Dakar Team.

A visit by overseas distributors came as the

second part of the Dakar journey of experi-

ence. This event took place on January 8th at

10 PM. The overseas distributor team visited

the Haval Dakar camp, and took a photo with

the team leaders and competitors. During the

visit, Haval Dakar Director Dong Ming briefed

Chairman Delco about GWM’s competition

and future technical direction. Li Yachao, the

manager of Chile Market Department, spoke

to the chairman about market situation. He

also introduced GWM’s development plan in

South America to the media.

GWM’s distributors from many markets, like

Russia, South Africa, Chile, Peru, Columbia,

Ecuador, Bolivia, and Panama offered their

strong support for the activity. They each

took an active part in the journey, sharing

information from their respective markets,

and forging a deep friendship with each

other.

The team will visit the La Serena Winery on

January 19th , make a tour of Santiago on

January 20th, and finally attended a test

drive at suburban Santiago’s Laguna on

Sousa. Spending his birthday in the

Dakar is not special for Sousa, because

his birthday coincided with every edition

of the rally over the past 14 years. Zhou

Yong presented Sousa with a “Lord

Rabbit” toy. Sousa made a gesture of

rabbit ears, saying happily and

confidently, “This represents that I will run

faster than a rabbit in future competition.”

On the morning of January 9 Lima Time, Michelin race director Mr. Berlin visited HAVAL Dakar
