EMC Corporation, Technology SolutionsFunctional Overview Checklist
IntroductionThis document is provided to and allows us to collect information necessary to implement and verify the EMC Avamar Implementation service. The sections that follow include questions about your specific data environment.Avamar Functional Overview Checklists Table 1. Avamar Implementation Checklist
Avamar Implementation Functional OverviewTaskTask CompleteData CompleteComments
System OverviewAvamar System Design and Basic Functionality FORMCHECKBOX
Describe each system used to make up grid configuration. FORMCHECKBOX
Explain Avamar GUI and each sections role in the overall usage of the product. FORMCHECKBOX
Discuss Avamar software product concepts. FORMCHECKBOX
Explain Avamar licensing and show the customer capacity overview from Avamar GUI Server Module. FORMCHECKBOX
Provide customer focus on Capacity mgmt. and review its importance.
Explain to customers the how to review alerts and system status. FORMCHECKBOX
Reference the Avamar Administrators Guide as source of information
** Completed during Implementation Service
Client & Plug-InInstall and Test Production Clients ** FORMCHECKBOX
Activate clients to Avamar utility node via FQDN. ** FORMCHECKBOX
InstallationsAs we only install ten (10) clients and (2) DB plug-ins on a basic PS engagement, ask customer to provide unique client types and applications such as Exchange, SQL, Oracle, and SharePoint, if applicable. ** FORMCHECKBOX
Explain install points:
Obtain clients agents and plug-ins off of grid (documents and download web page) FORMCHECKBOX
Choose correct (or nearest) client type (briefly explain): FORMCHECKBOX
If windows, use cases for vss or otm FORMCHECKBOX
Applicable to 6.X clients using the 4.X client for Win 2000
If plugin, base client agent installed first FORMCHECKBOX
If windows clusters, special cluster install pattern, determine client installation location and cover the following:
Install locations, size requirements, cache operation FORMCHECKBOX
Install and activate client to Avamar Utility Node via FQD FORMCHECKBOX
Avamar Domains ConfigurationsDiscuss use cases around creating Domains should customer desire separation of clients by department responsibility, operating system, or application functions. This may be required by customer as there may be multiple groups who have responsibility for daily backups and or restores. FORMCHECKBOX
Show customer how to create Avamar Domains as best described by the Avamar Best Practices Guide FORMCHECKBOX
Using the Avamar GUI, navigate to the Administration section, select Actions, New Domain FORMCHECKBOX
Avamar DatasetsDiscuss with the customer creation of Avamar Datasets. The Dataset is typically where client/application options are defined for the type of backup you are performing. Typically an individual Avamar Dataset is created for each type of operating system or specific plug-in type used by the customer (e.g., Windows File Systems, Linux, Exchange, and SQL). FORMCHECKBOX
Using Avamar GUI, navigate to Tools --> Datasets FORMCHECKBOX
Always use a naming convention (e.g., servers_dataset). Help is in policy wizard. As customer is driving, they will choose the options they care about, and you can discuss these. FORMCHECKBOX
Explain dataset properties and evaluation order: FORMCHECKBOX
Source data list FORMCHECKBOX
Exclusion list FORMCHECKBOX
Inclusion list FORMCHECKBOX
Plug-in options FORMCHECKBOX
Highlight pre- and post-script fields, throttles, advanced options, 'more' option FORMCHECKBOX
Avamar SchedulesDiscuss with the customer creation of Avamar Schedules. The Avamar Schedule is typically configured to define daily backup times & backup window duration. During the discussion of the backup schedule configuration we typically discuss the Avamar Maintenance Cycle covering their functions and impact on the Daily Backup window the customer desires to implement. FORMCHECKBOX
Using Avamar GUI, navigate to Tools --> Schedules FORMCHECKBOX
Always use a naming convention ... servers_schedule (helps in policy wizard) FORMCHECKBOX
As customer is driving, they will choose the options they care about, and you can discuss these FORMCHECKBOX
Briefly review backup window with customer Avamar maintenance is between x and x FORMCHECKBOX
Customer backup window is between y and y FORMCHECKBOX
Explain schedule points FORMCHECKBOX
Avamar Retention PoliciesDiscuss with the customer creation of Avamar Retention Policies. The Avamar Retention Policy is typically configured to define a custom set of daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly retention type to be applied to backups performed. FORMCHECKBOX
Dependent on what was sold. Direct discussion and reiterate how they were sized and capacity etc.
Using Avamar GUI, navigate to Tools --> Policies FORMCHECKBOX
Always use a naming convention (e.g., servers_retention-policy). Help is in policy wizard. As customer is driving, they will choose the options they care about, and you can discuss these. FORMCHECKBOX
Point out advanced option (avoid basic, do advanced ... lets you set full retention choices) FORMCHECKBOX
Always have successive fields logically larger than previous fields (e.g., 14 days, 4 weeks, 12 months, 2 years) FORMCHECKBOX
Grid was sized per sizing spreadsheet, which took customer retention policy and data types into account FORMCHECKBOX
Explain how every backup is logically a full FORMCHECKBOX
Dailies get tagged as weekly, weeklies get tagged as monthly FORMCHECKBOX
Avamar Group ConfigurationDiscuss with customer the requirement to create Avamar Groups. The groups are created to separate clients by operating system; and by application functions. FORMCHECKBOX
Show customer how to create Avamar Groups as best described by the Avamar Best Practices Guide FORMCHECKBOX
Using the Avamar GUI, navigate to the Policy section, select Actions, New Group FORMCHECKBOX
Using newly defined groups, edit each group to map a previously configured Dataset, Schedule, & Retention Policy to use as a defined set of configuration options. FORMCHECKBOX
Using each newly defined group, add applicable clients to each group. Clients must be part of the domain where the group has been previously defined. FORMCHECKBOX
Enterprise Manager ReviewReview the System Maintenance tab which provides access to workflows. FORMCHECKBOX
Customer enabled workflow may be included in future Avamar releases
Replication Configuration ReviewReview the Replication Configuration specifically for Single Node/ROBO environment FORMCHECKBOX
Excludes S2400 nodes
Avamar SW Upgrade OverviewExplain that EMC performs all upgrades and let them know they need to open an SR to request an upgrade and that upgrades are offline activities. FORMCHECKBOX
Password MaintenanceExplain the importance for the customer to maintain passwords and password security FORMCHECKBOX
Default passwords removed in 7.0
Project ClosureProject Closure

Submit Project Completion Form FORMCHECKBOX
Remind customer to complete Assurance of Solution Quality (ASQ) survey FORMCHECKBOX
