Someone is injured in a home fire every 40 minutes. Each year, nearly 3,000 people die in home fires in the United States.

To help educate the public about the dangers of fire and how to prevent them, this week was named National Fire Prevention Week.

On Oct. 9 and Oct. 10, the Bolingbrook Fire Department will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each of its fire stations located at the following addresses: 460 E. Briarcliff Road; 375 W. Lily Cache; 376 E. Boughton Road; 1111 W. Boughton Road; 1900 W. Rodeo Road. The department will offer station and equipment tours as well as free food and giveaways. The winner of the elementary poster contests will be on display at each of the station houses.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire

Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

This year’s focus is on the importance of smoke alarms. Statistics show that smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a reported fire in half.

The association reports that in 2003-2006, roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or nonfunctional smoke alarms. No smoke alarms were present in 40% of the home fire deaths and in 23% of the home fire deaths smoke alarms were present but did not sound.

The following is an excerpt on smoke alarms from the National

Protection Fire Association:In more than half of the

reported home fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate even though the fire was large enough, batteries were missing or disconnected. Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected alarms.

More than half of the smoke alarms found in reported fires and two-thirds of the alarms found in homes with fire deaths were powered by battery only.

Most homes still have smoke alarms powered by battery only. In a 2007 American Housing Survey (AHS), 67% of the respondents who reported having smoke alarms said they were powered by battery only.

In a 2008 telephone survey, only 12% knew that smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. In fires considered large enough to activate a smoke alarm, hard-wired alarms operated 91% of the time; battery-powered

smoke alarms operated 75% of the time.

In a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission survey of households with any fires,

interconnected smoke alarms were more likely to operate and alert occupants to a fire. This includes fires in which the fire department was not called.

Fire Prevention Week highlights smoke alarm awareness


Local residents are striving to make a difference from their neighborhood to those around the world who are struggling to survive.

Area towns are coming out to support the CROP Hunger Walk, sponsored by the Church World Service, over the next weekend, with different walks being held across the area in solidarity.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty and is a system of providing ways for people to improve their quality of life.

The group focuses on grassroots and sustainable programs that address the specific needs of each community.

CROP funds do provide food but also offer vocational training, literacy programs, clean water initiatives, refugee assistance, advocacy for women and other victimized groups, disaster relief, etc.

The program began when, at the end of World War II, many people wanted to share the U.S.’s abundance with European war victims. The Church World Service’s first purpose was to gather wheat and other crops from U.S. farms for shipment to Europe.

Today, CROP hunger walks are an important part of community life for more than 2000 towns and cities in the United States, bringing together people of different faiths, cultures, and age groups.

In the past 25 years, CROP walks have raised $334 million to bring help and hope to people in need internationally and locally.

“Simply put, we walk because they walk. In most of the world, people (including children, the elderly and the handicapped) have to walk literally miles every day for necessities like food and water, and if they can get those things, the quality is atrocious,”

said LeeAnn Stoughton, who is participating in the Romeoville CROP Walk. “Not to mention the lack of employment, clothing, sanitation, health care, and education.”

Bolingbrook residents will be participating in the Naperville Area CROP walk along with nearly 700 walkers and 20 area congregations and organizations to help hungry families in the community and around the world.

The annual walk help helps hungry families locally through the Loaves and Fishes food pantry in Naperville and the Northern Illinois Food Bank, and around the world through

the Church World Service. They hope to raise $72,000 this year.

The walk will be held Oct. 17 and will begin and end at Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Gartner Road.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the walk steps off at 1:30 p.m. Walkers may choose a route of 3.1 miles or .6 miles. The route will travel through residential areas of Naperville.

New businesses continue to call Bolingbrook their new home, carving out their own niche in the neighborhood.

Dr. Milad Nourhamadi recently received approval from the Bolingbrook Village Board to

open a new dental office in the Northridge Plaza, behind the Long John Silver’s, located at 201 N. Bolingbrook Drive.

A native of Naperville, he said he was familiar with the area and wanted to open up his first practice in the Chicago land area. “Bolingbrook is a great area and I hope to help and bring service

to the community where I see a need,” said Nourhamadi.

Nourhamadi hopes to take an active role in not only bringing services but in raising awareness to the community but offering workshops about dental health.

“We’re not just going to be a dental office,” said Nourhamadi. “I would to reach out to the

schools and to families early on and beginning talking about prevention at the infant stages. I’m excited to get started.”

Nourhamadi hopes to open by mid November.

Unleash the inner witchy woman for a good cause

In response to taxpayers’ requests, the Supervisor of Assessments is enhancing the property search function on its Web site, enabling taxpayers to view taxing district information for individual parcel numbers.

“In the tax forums we held this year, many taxpayers asked for help with getting in contact with their local taxing bodies,” said Super visor of Assessments Rhonda Novak. “I really wanted to address that concern, and I think this new feature will make the process a little easier.”

Taxing districts, or taxing bodies, include townships, counties, municipalities, schools, park districts and other local government entities that use property tax revenue to finance the majority of services they provide citizens. Taxing bodies levy the amount of money they need to operate, and tax rates are determined according to those levies.

According to Novak, many people don’t understand that the money levied by taxing bodies is the most important factor when

calculating tax bills. “People focus on the assessment part, and they don’t realize that if taxing districts increase their spending, the tax rate will often increase to cover expenditures. The effect of that often is that tax bills go up even if assessments go down.”

The new Web site feature will list all the taxing districts for a particular property and provide the names and contact information for taxing district representatives. This information is provided by the Will County Clerk’s Office.

“We’re excited about working with the Superior of Assessments Office to provide these records,” said County Clerk Nancy Shultz Voots. “We’re constantly working to make this type of information more accessible to county taxpayers, who rely on us to keep records as well as disseminate important information.”

To access taxing district information through the Supervisor of Assessments Web site, go to www.willcountysoa.com and use the property search function to find information

about a particular property. Once that information is displayed, click “view taxing bodies” to see the various taxing districts and contact information.

“When department heads and elected officials listen to taxpayers and work together to address their needs, there’s really no limit to the quality of service we can provide to Will County residents,” said County Executive Larry Walsh. “This is just another example of how we’re committed to reaching out and responding to taxpayers.”

The Will County Board joined other elected officials and representatives from Waste Management to break ground on a renewable energy facility at the Prairie View Landfill that will soon recover and convert methane gas into energy.

The green initiative has the potential to eventually provide over a million dollars annually for the county.

“I am very pleased this project has come to fruition, so we can officially break ground on Will County’s very own gas to energy plant,” said Chairman Jim Moustis. “Envisioned in the original siting of the Prairie View Landill, it is now a Will County reality because of the leadership of Utilities Ad Hoc Committee Chair Chuck Maher, who first moved this concept forward in 2006, and the cooperation of the County Board, County Executive,

and our private partner Waste Management. By converting trash into cash a new county revenue stream is created that is not a tax burden on the hard working men and women of Will County. This facility is not only environmentally friendly it is also economically friendly, and the board will continue to pursue such important initiatives.”

Officials from Waste Management say the Will County owned landfill currently produces enough gas to install two engine generators, although three engines would be installed once the facility is operational by December 2011.

Each 1.6 MW Caterpillar G3520 engine requires 600 cubic feet per minute of landfill gas (LFG) to run. Three engines would generate enough electricity to power 3,800

homes. Additional engines up to eight total could be added as gas production increases in the coming years.

“This project is about local government working outside of the box to find ways to bring in more revenues to benefit its citizens without raising taxes,” said board member Chuck Maher (R-Naperville). “During tough economic times like these, elected officials need to examine and leverage all of their existing resources. We greatly appreciate Waste Management working with us to harness our landfill’s methane gas in order to bring a green, renewable energy facility online and provide a sellable, usable energy resource.”

Under a 20-year agreement, conservative estimates show the county receiving $11.2 million over the life of the

facility. If energy prices exceed $53 per Mwhr, a 50/50 revenue sharing program with Waste Management would provide additional monies.

“With governmental entities across the country being challenged by declining revenues, I am proud Will County is able to benefit from this type of public-private partnership,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

“The cooperative spirit of the County Executive’s office and the County Board on this project, and many of our other green efforts, is what is keeping Will County moving forward despite difficult economic conditions.”

Construction of the facility is estimated at $7.2 million, but no Will County tax dollars will be used. A Department of Energy grant to Will County is

providing one million dollars towards the project. The grant was part of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Waste Management has agreed to provide the remaining funds needed to construct the facility. Waste Management built the first such gas to energy plant in 1987. Since then, they now generate 262 MW from 51 such plants, of which 9 are currently operating in Illinois.

“By turning garbage into fuel, this project stands to benefit the people of Will County by generating stable and ongoing revenue,” said Minority Leader Walter Adamic (D-Joliet). “We need to consider more of these types of green initiatives for the sake of our environment and future generations.”

Renewable energy facility promises to create cash out of trash

The nip in the air can only mean one thing: it’s time for pumpkins, apple cider and fall-themed fun.

This year, that’s exactly what a local farm is delivering.

Pumpkin Fest 2010 is under way at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm, 17250 S. Weber Road in Crest Hill.

The family farm is now in its 101st year, said Sue Siegel, who owns the farm with husband Paul.

“The fourth generation is actually working here now, and the fifth generation was just born,” Siegel said.

Although the farm is located off a major highway, Siegel said the family wants to give guests a real country experience.

“Our main focus here is education,” she said. “We’re a real working farm, and we really want people to feel like they’re in the country when they’re here.”

Siegel’s offers events to let city kids learn about life on the farm, including Farmer Paul’s classroom, where students learn about the farm’s staple crops, soybeans and corn.

“He also teaches them about

mommy and daddy flowers and where their food comes from,” Siegel said.

Kids can also enjoy a petting zoo, the Golden Gulch Gem Mine, a baby chick nursery and the Pumpkin Mine kiddie train

Adults can also get in on the fun with a climbing wall, the Ghost Town railroad and plenty of food.

Here’s a rundown on what the farm is offering this fall.

Pumpkin Fest: The annual fall fest is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. now through Halloween.

Admission is free for kids ages 2 and under and $12 for the rest of the family.

“Everything’s included,” Sue said, and families can visit the farm’s petting zoo, enjoy hayrack rides and browse a 15-acre pumpkin patch. For an additional fee, kids can also enjoy pony rides.

There’s plenty to eat and drink, from apple cider doughnuts to real cane sugar root beer floats, smoked turkey legs, sweet potato fries and more.

While you’re on the farm, celebrate the Chicago

Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup win by testing your skills in this year’s corn maze.

The maze is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays now through Halloween, along with Columbus Day, with the last entry at 4:30 p.m.

Sue said it was Paul’s idea to honor the hometown heroes with a maze created to look like the Blackhawk’s famous Indian head logo.

“We just wanted to make a tribute to Chicago,” Siegel said.

It was also a way to celebrate the victory of at least one local team.

“With the Cubs and the Sox, you never know,” Siegel added.

Each year, the maze is designed on graph paper. Round Up is used to kill crops in strategic places to create the design, she said.

Guests are challenged to hit all 10 checkpoints in the maze – but they can get some help from Siegel’s staff.

“There’s a number they can text to get clues,” Sue said. You

don’t have to worry about getting lost, she added.

Farm staff is stationed throughout the maze to make sure everybody makes it out.

If you’re daunted by the five-mile Blackhawks maze, you can try out the baby corn maze, Sue said.

The smaller maze is designed to look like a 1934 John Deere tractor – the first tractor owned by Paul’s father, Francis Siegel.

If you’re looking for a thrill, the famous Statesville Haunted Prison returns this year with all-new scares.

Created each year by Paul and Zombie Army Productions, the haunted prison is months in the making.

“We start redesigning every January,” Sue said. “There’s lots of new stuff this year.” Live actors inhabit 30 cells at the “maximum security” prison, which has been scaring visitors since 1996.

Statesville is open from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 7 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 31.

Guests must be at least 10 years old to enter, and anyone under age 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Tickets are available for $30 on site and online at www.statesville.org.

While the spooky prison might be too much for younger visitors, Sue said family friendly scares can be had at Frank’s Haunted Barn, a toned-down Halloween treat.

The Valley View School District 365U has been bracing itself for a tough budget year, long-anticipating a deficit. However, due to unpaid state funding the deficit they were planning for nearly doubled.

The board recently adopted a 2010-11 budget of $245 million that includes a $9.7 million deficit. District reserved will be used to cover the shortfall.

District officials had been projecting a deficit of under $5 million following some $11.7 million in cuts the board made earlier this year. That operational deficit still stands, according to Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi, but sources at the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) suggest a considerably darker picture.

“The state is not doing its job. They’re not doing their share,” said Board President Steve Quigley. “They put all these requirements on school boards, yet they’re not giving us the money. They’re putting us in a box.”

ISBE officials report the state intends to withhold 75 percent of the money it owes school districts for 2010-11 state mandated services in special education, bilingual education, early childhood education, food service and transportation. In Valley View’s case, that means the state will delay payment of an estimated $12.6 million in Mandated Categorical Aid until the 2011-12 school year.

The district is still waiting to receive $5.75 million in late payments from March 2010 that the state currently owes the school district for state mandated

services from the 2009-10 school year. He has explained that the state will make every effort to reimburse those funds to schools across the state by December 31 but it is uncertain if this will actually happen.

Grizaffi cited a drop in revenue as the single largest factor budget with General State Aid expected to decline by $2.6 million and funds for Mandated Categorical Aid to drop by $3 million. In two years state funding will have decreased a total of almost $8.4 million.

On the expense side, even though the total number of Valley View staff members has declined by 59 since last year, increased costs in the areas of salaries and benefits are creating a roughly 4 percent increase ($12.8 million) in the Education Fund. Despite a freeze placed on raises for most administrators, salaries are up

$4.8 million (4.3 percent) and the cost of benefits will rise by $1.9 million (3.9 percent).

The budget includes operating fund expenditures of slightly more than $221 million, up about $1.35 million, or less than 1 percent, from 2009-10. On the income side $162 million will come from property taxes.

“Further budget reductions will be necessary in the ensuing years,” Grizaffi said. “Reduction in our expenses will be the primary focus because it is the area in our budget over which we have the most control.”

The district has made close to $12 million in cuts earlier this year, and nearly $9 million the previous year, trying to avoid affecting classroom instruction.

“We’ve done a yeoman’s job making cuts,” Quigley added. “Next year it’s going to be harder if the state doesn’t do its job.”

Grizaffi said the district is continually monitoring its reserves and cash flow situation.

One small hope for the district is to receive funds from the Education Jobs Fund program, a new federal program that provides $10 billion in assistance to states to save or create education jobs for the 2010-2011 school year. Jobs funded under this program include those that provide educational and related services for early childhood, elementary, and secondary education.

The district’s preliminary allocation is estimated to be $2.1 million. However, those funds have not yet been included into the budget due to the uncertainty of how it may be spent. [email protected]

If you want to save money while traveling, consider hosteling. Several thousand hostels provide beds throughout Europe for $20 to $40 per night.

For this rock-bottom price, you get “no frills” accommodations in clean, stark dormitories. The good news for couples and families is that many hostels have a few doubles and some family rooms (book ahead for these). It’s a great way to enjoy some privacy while saving money.

You may assume hostels aren’t for you because, by every standard, you’re “old.” Well, many countries have dropped the word “youth” from their hostel organization’s name, and for years Hostelling International has given “youths” over the age of 54 a discount on membership cards. Even the last holdout, the German state of Bavaria, finally dropped its youths-only restriction. If you’re alive, you’re young enough to hostel anywhere in Europe.

A reader wrote on my Website: “My partner and I stayed in a ‘youth’ hostel for the first time by Lake Como and thought we’d be the oldest people there. Not so! At our table was a 60-ish couple from Sydney and a 79-year-old British woman who was backpacking alone through Europe. All three were a delight, but especially the backpacker, who said she stays in hostels for the evening company.”

Solo travelers find a family in every hostel, and can always find a new travel partner. The hostel’s recreation and living rooms are my favorite hangouts. People gather, play games, tell stories, share information, read, write, and team up for future travels. The lights may go out by 11 p.m., but bunk-bed conversation rages long after. You’ll find yourself propped on your elbows staring intensely into the darkness, passing

around travel tales like a bucket of popcorn.

Some hostels serve hearty, super-cheap meals, often in family-style settings. A typical dinner is fish sticks and mashed potatoes seasoned by conversation with new friends from Norway to Namibia to New Zealand. The self-service kitchen, complete with utensils, pots, and pans, is a great budget aid that comes with most hostels. Larger hostels even have a small grocery store. International friendships rise with the bread in the kitchens.

Still, hostels are not hotels. Many people hate them. Hostels can have strict rules. Some lock up during the day (usually from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and a few may have a curfew at night, when the doors are locked.

Unless you snare a double or family room, you could have lots of company. Dorms have from four to 20 beds. At official hostels, which require a membership card (see www.hiusa.org), the sexes are segregated.

Many independent hostels have both segregated and mixed

dorms.School groups can turn

hostels upside down, typically on weekends during the school year and weekdays in the summer. The sounds you’ll hear just after everyone’s turned in remind me of summer camp - giggles, burps, jokes, and strange noises in many languages. Snoring is permitted and practiced openly.

Theft can be a problem in a few hostels, but try this simple safeguard: Wear your money belt (even while sleeping) and don’t leave valuables lying

around. Use the storage lockers that are available in most facilities.

Hostels come in all shapes and sizes, and some are sightseeing destinations in themselves. There are castles, moored ships, alpine chalets, huge modern buildings, lakefront villas, former prisons, medieval manor houses, former choirboys’ dorms, country estates, and former royal residences.

I’ve hosteled most in Northern Europe, where hostels are more comfortable and the savings over hotels

more exciting (particularly in Scandinavia, where you find lots of Volvos in hostel parking lots, as Scandinavians know that hostels provide the best - and usually only - $30 beds in town). I rarely hostel in the south, where hostels are less common, and two or three people can sleep just as cheaply in a budget hotel.

Someone might sugarcoat the situation. You

might be made to feel helpless in the week ahead when faced by a situation that upsets your relationships, but that someone says is “for your own good.”

Your anxious hunt for love is like a

goldfish hunting for water. Love is surrounding you, but it is invisible so you can’t quite accept it. Don’t impetuously break off a relationship this week.

Sometimes you are so sweet that you are in

danger of triggering sour results. You might bend over backward to please or appease the people you work with - only to have it backfire in the week ahead.

If you go overboard, there might not

be a life preserver in reach. Curtail your spending and watch out for little extravagances that mount up in the upcoming week. Unexpected changes may cause setbacks.

Your tactics are trustworthy through

thick and thin. You might not always be able to get your point across to others in the week ahead, but you will be able to ride out any misunderstandings like a champ.

You like to be seen by others as well-fixed,

well-heeled and well-known. In the week ahead, you might shift your focus to home and family and could be prompted to entertain others at your own table.

You are a mere mortal. Your ability to alter

the outcome is like trying to pull the sword from the stone. In the week to come, you might be wise to accept with serenity that which must change.

Don’t promise more than you can deliver.

In your eagerness to please other people or to win some gold stars for your resume, you might offer to do more than your fair share in the upcoming week.

Get back in the loop. If you have been a

hermit or just feeling isolated recently, you can mingle with others without fear in the week ahead. The new people you meet will offer a refreshing change of pace.

Keep your friends close and your

enemies closer. Relationships could shift in the week ahead, so you need to keep your ear to the ground. Don’t loan anyone money - especially in the first half of the week.

One grain of luck can be worth more than

a whole rice field of wisdom. In the week to come, you might be forewarned about outside influences that can upset finances. You can luckily avoid catastrophe.

“Spoiled is as spoiled does” is as apt

an expression as “Pretty is as pretty does.” You may be tempted to spoil yourself silly in the week ahead in the hope of appearing more attractive, successful or popular.

In its first week without sensational sophomore quarterback Aaron Bailey, Bolingbrook needed time to get its offense going.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, visiting Homewood-Flossmoor did not give them the needed time as H-F knocked off Bolingbrook 19-6 in SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division play Friday night.

“They did a great job grinding the ball,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. “That is something we have to get better at. They have a lot of big play players on their team and the goal was to slow them down. Coming into the game, we knew their offense was going to give our defense trouble.”

With Bailey sidelined in a walking boot with a sprained ankle, DJ Pruitt got his first start at quarterback after playing three quarters last week following the injury.

“DJ had a week to prepare for this and I think he did a helluva job and I can’t wait to see him next week,” Ivlow said.

Pruitt stepped up after the game as the team leader and took a lot of the blame himself.

“Our rhythm was really, really slow today,” he said. “I can put

some of that on me because we were not crisp and when you work with a new offense and a new formation, you have to be crisp.

“I had to learn four formations and we only had three serious days where we are really going to go 100 percent, but we only went 45 percent this week. Our practices looked terrible. We have to come out 110 percent every day.”

He also knows he can do more this week in preparation for Lincoln-Way East to get the team as a whole ready for the game.

“(The Vikings) are a great team, don’t get me wrong, but we have to come out in practice every day and work hard,” Pruitt said. “It’s always the same guys every day in practice screwing around asking what we are doing after practice. We have to worry about doing out stuff and making football first, then we can worry about everything else. Homewood is a great team, but I know for a fact that we could have put up 40 on them and won this game.

“We go hard for the teams that beat us last year. We practiced for Downers South and were silent, Lockport we came out silent. Against the Joliet’s and Homewood-Flossmoor we practice like they are going to roll over and die for us. We just have to give 110 percent every day of the week.”

All the scoring was done in the first half of the game, as H-F

scored with 4:45 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

A quarterback sneak on the first play of the second quarter and the second touchdown catch of the game by Malik Norman put the Vikings ahead 19-0 with 5:30 to go.

Pruitt hit Xavier Perkins on a

59-yard catch and run at the 3:13 mark to cut the lead to 19-6.

In the third quarter, both teams had only one possession as the Vikings chewed up the clock.

Pruitt was the leader on offense with nine carries for 90 yards. He was 7-of-16 passing for 87 yards, one touchdown and two

interceptions. The Raiders travel Friday to

face league-leading Lincoln-Way East.

“This is when it gets fun,” Ivlow said. “Winning 40-0 is no fun. I like these close games. Let’s get after it and play some football.”

Most novice golfers would be thrilled to shoot a 75.

But Bolingbrook’s David Cooke is not a novice golfer.

The senior knows his 75 in the SouthWest Suburban Conference Tournament last week was a good score, but he was still disappointed with the result because he knew he could do better.

“I was six over (par) on the last seven holes,” Cooke said. “I am happy with the 75, but after the first 11 holes, I wouldn’t have been. I have mixed emotions, I guess. I am happy with a bad round of 75.

“I was hitting the ball really well, but I feel I choked or blew up on the back nine. I was still able to manage a good score.”

Cooke said it was his twevelth and thirteenth holes that prevented a lower number.

“At No. 12, I hit a good drive and landed in a burned spot and hit my second shot short of the green,” he said. “Then my chip checked up and I wasn’t planning on that, so I was 20 feet from the pin and I two-putt for bogey.

“Then on 13, I had a six-iron to the hole and it got (wind) blown a little bit and went out of bounds. So I re-teed, and I chipped and it rolled really far, then I two-putted for a six.”

His score placed him in third place, behind champion Brian Bullington of Lincoln-Way East, who shot a 71.

Shane McEvilly of Joliet was second with a 74 and Zack Trent of Lockport was a shot behind Cooke with a 76.

The other three scoring golfers for Bolingbrook were Zack Kuchta, who posted an 86,

followed by Matt Obzera’s 99 and Max Warren’s 101.

Kyle Jordan (103), Nick Freund (103), Jack Enda (107) and Trent Smith (108) also played for the Raiders.

Bolingbrook ended up sixth in the tournament with a 361.

Lincoln-Way East and Lockport tied for the lowest team score with a 319.

East earned the win, as their No. 5 golfer posted an 86, while Lockport’s fifth score was an 87.

Homewood-Flossmoor (324), Joliet (325) and Sandburg (326) rounded out the top five.

Bolingbrook was at the Class 3A regional tournament at Mistwood in Romeoville Oct. 5, after Bugle press deadlines.

They competed with Lockport, Oswego, Oswego East, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield South, Plainfield North and Romeoville.

For Bolingbrook’s Selena Montelongo, the SouthWest Suburban Prairie Conference meet was the first time in her career she had ever played 18 holes in tournament play.

She took advantage if the situation and fired a team-best 117.

“It was my first 18 hole match and it wasn’t bad,” she said. “It was pretty good. I am really proud of my team, a lot of us played really well. I thought it would be harder to compete with the girls that have been playing golf since they were little.”

She was followed on the team by Keisha Shores who tallied a 119, Leanette Pokuwaah (121) and Katie Hogan (127).

Detten (130), Tori Howard (132) and Paige Lee (141) also competed for the Raiders, but did not score in the meet.

As a team, Bolingbrook carded 484 team points, fifth in the six-team tournament.

Homewood-Flossmoor won the tournament with a score of 308. They were followed by Lockport (396), Sandburg (404) and Joliet Township (457). Bradley-Bourbonnais (489) placed sixth.

Like other Raider golfers, Montelongo came from another sport in her junior year to give golf a try.

“I had been in cross country and I wanted to try something new and my dad plays, so I thought I would try it,” she said. “I have learned a lot this year, I learned you can’t rush the game. You have to be patient and take your time. It is really a mental sport.

“The coaches tell us all the

time that if you think you will do well, you will.”

Assistant coach Jeff Allen thought they did play well.

“It wasn’t bad at all,” he said. “This was the first chance a lot of our girls played 18 holes. This is a new experience for them and in my opinion, I thought they played well.”

The coaching staff saw progress all season, not just this tournament.

“From day one to where we are right now, they have made tremendous strides,” Allen said. “The great thing is many of them are underclassmen and have the chance to play for us next year or two years, which is fantastic. We are looking forward to seeing what they can do and get better.”
