The Story of Kripa In 1981, in the simple environs of a church compound in Bandra, Kripa (a Sanskrit word meaning “grace”) was born, with a priest, a doctor, a recovering alcoholic and three patients in attendance. In just over three decades, Kripa has grown into the largest non-governmental organization in India helping people suffering from chemical dependency and HIV infection. Kripa Foundation is the largest Non–Governmental Secular and Indian Organization, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Govt. of India, helping people afflicted and affected from Chemical Dependency and HIV Infection. Kripa Foundation offers a non-discriminating, supportive Community Living, helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle. Kripa Foundation highlights the need to study risk perception, effectively assist in harm minimization and trains the affected individuals to monitor life as an ongoing process of Spiritual Growth. The Organization began in Bandra in 1981. Since then this Public Charitable Trust has grown to 75 facilities in 12 States in India, namely Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, U.P. and Rajasthan, of which the Treatment cum Rehabilitation Centres in Mumbai, Goa, Imphal, Kohima and Shillong are aided through Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India grants. National and International Donors aid the remaining centres. The thrust is on helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle. This philosophy has awarded Kripa with tremendous experience in behavioral modeling and interventions in vulnerable populations. Kripa’s work in the field of HIV/AIDS started off in 1990 when it first reached out to drug addicts incarcerated in the Central Jail at Manipur. These addicts were forcibly thrown into prison by their parents and were leading a sub-human existence. In Nagaland too the Kripa Counseling Centre has an ongoing prison outreach programme carrying the message of hope and recovery. The link between substance abuse and HIV/AIDS has led us to conduct on September 11, 1995 a benchmark survey in Manipur, the first of its kind under the aegis of the Government of India/ U.N.D.C.P. Kripa later commissioned a 24/7 HIV / AIDS Helpline on December 5, 1995. This is successfully providing service till date. As demonstrated Kripa has been reaching out to the community of substance abusers, those with dual problems of substance/chemical use/abuse/dependency and HIV and their families. Our Plan of Recovery Vision – A Global Healing Presence. Mission – Non-discriminating, supportive community living, helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle, to alter the risk perception, to minimize harm and to see the need to monitor life as an ongoing process of spiritual growth. Goal: Empowering those afflicted and affected by chemical dependency and HIV/AIDS. Objectives: ♦ To provide care, treatment and support. ♦ To interface with community through prevention intervention modules. ♦ To develop and implement training modules. ♦ To generate human resources. ♦ To include research in all aspects of service ♦ To maintain international standards.

Honors and Achievements "THE CIRCLE" A Film on Kripa Dharavi- A Home for Street Children run by Fr. Joe H Pereira is nominated at the 10th Jaipur International Film Festival ‘The Circle’ is a movie about addiction, about drugs, and about how life can be changed in the blink of an eye only by using the wrong substances at the wrong time. The documentary begins with a couple of scenes where young people admit having taken substances, and how it all goes to a painful and horrible addiction. All of these stories start and end in the same way (drug-wise), but there is hope for them. At least this is what ‘The Circle’ is showing us: a path for resurrection, for a clean life and mind. Philippa Frisby’s documentary is powerful and beautiful at the same time. There is a disclaimer, in the beginning, saying that some of the scenes may be disturbing, but let’s not forget that those are parts of our lives, and they can happen to anyone. We don’t have to be scared by life; we must see and know as much as we can, so if something happens to us or to a person we love, to know exactly what to do, and when to intervene. The things that touched us the most in ‘The Circle’ were the portraits Frisby managed to capture on tape. By only looking at the human faces in this film you can see all the emotions we have on this planet: sadness, pain, happiness, desperation, peace – all of them are on the faces of some former addicts, people that seem to have been on another dimension and now enjoy even more their time on earth. What is shocking in ‘The Circle’ is the age the young ones started doing drugs or drinking alcohol for the first time. We’d never expect a ten-year-old to be almost addicted and to speak about alcohol like a grown-up would do. Also, to hear the story of a kid that took drugs until he was fourteen is also a hard pill to swallow for many. But as the documentary shows us, there is a way of leaving everything behind through yoga. The documentary features some insights into the yoga programs that are used to set the addicts on the right path. It is fascinating to watch this documentary, and then try out what you’ve learned because it seems amazingly satisfying. Even though Philippa Frisby’s project may seem revolting, in reality it is a great source of inspiration, and a must-see for every documentary film enthusiast out there. There are so many sides of this world we don’t acknowledge, and through documentaries like this one, we get the chance to learn more about humanity.
