The Story of Kripa In 1981, in the simple environs of a church compound in Bandra, Kripa (a Sanskrit word meaning “grace”) was established, with a priest, a doctor, a recovering alcoholic and three patients in attendance. In just three decades, Kripa has grown into the largest non-governmental organization in India helping people suffering from chemical dependency and HIV infection. Kripa Foundation is the largest Non–Governmental Secular and Indian Organization, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, helping people afflicted and affected from Chemical Dependency and HIV Infection. Kripa Foundation offers a non-discriminating, supportive Community Living, helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle. Kripa Foundation highlights the need to study risk perception, effectively assist in harm minimization and trains the affected individuals to monitor life as an ongoing process of Spiritual Growth. The thrust is on helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle. This philosophy has awarded Kripa with tremendous experience in behavioral modeling and interventions in vulnerable populations. Since then this Public Charitable Trust has grown to 69 facilities in 12 States in India, namely Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh & Rajasthan of which the Treatment cum Rehabilitation Centres in Mumbai, Goa, Imphal, Ko-hima and Shillong are aided through the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India grants. National and International Donors aid the remaining centres. Kripa’s work in to the field of HIV/AIDS started off in 1990 when it first reached out to drug addicts incarcerated in the Central Jail at Manipur. In Nagaland, the Kripa Counseling Centre has an ongoing prison outreach programme carrying the message of hope and recovery. The link between substance abuse and HIV/AIDS has led us to conduct on September 11, 1995 a benchmark survey in Manipur, the first of its kind under the aegis of the Government of India/ U.N.D.C.P. Kripa later commissioned a 24/7 HIV / AIDS Helpline on December 5, 1995. This is successfully providing service till date. As demonstrated Kripa has been reaching out to the community of substance abusers, those with dual problems of substance/chemical use/abuse/dependency and HIV and their families. Our Plan of Recovery Vision – A Global Healing Presence. Mission - Non – discriminating, supportive community living helping people to introspect and bring about change in lifestyle, to alter the risk perception, to minimize harm and to see the need to monitor life as an ongoing process of spiritual growth. Goal: Empowering those afflicted and affected by chemical dependency and HIV/AIDS. Objectives: ♦ To provide care, treatment and support. ♦ To interface with community through prevention intervention modules. ♦ To develop and implement training modules. ♦ To generate human resources. ♦ To include research in all aspects of service ♦ To maintain international standards.

Kripa Institute of Training (KIT) Kripa Institute of Training conducts regular programmes that provide either exposure or substantially enhance the information base and technical ability in both therapeutic concepts as well as documentation. This training is aimed at people working in the field as well as those referred by other organizations of training and development, such as industry, social groups and educational institutions. The training is offered to paramedical, social groups and experiential counselors and students, in addition to graduates and postgraduates in the field. Programmes are conducted by Kripa staff and are often facilitated by nationally and internationally recognized authorities and resource persons. The modalities of training include audio-visual, electronic and text material. Formalized courses stretch from 1 week / 4 weeks to 1 year. Kripa Foundation is recognized for its activities by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. It has been identified as a training centre by N.I.S.D., Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India and by Voluntary Organizations working in India and abroad Kripa AIDS Although Kripa Foundation’s first foray into the field of HIV/AIDS was in the year 1991, it has now embarked on a vast activity directly related to HIV/AIDS care. This activity is in the form of composite replicable projects at various Kripa activity locations. Under Kripa-AIDS, the first initiative is the formation of the 1] Vasai Region AIDS Control Society (VRACS) - Kripa Vasai, which is based on SMART

(Surveillance Monitoring & Care Awareness, Research and Training) service. Vasai Region AIDS Control Society (VRACS) is the sole private sector initiative in Vasai region for managing the HIV epidemic. The first Clinico-community model of its kind i.e. the first comprehensive system focusing on primary, secondary, and tertiary level prevention linked to a community base. Its broad goal is to establish Vasai as a controlled zone for HIV AIDS. Operating in a predetermined 64 sq km area (VRACS Zone) has utilized various public health strategies to achieve this goal. The focus on participatory care is established through Networked Initiatives for Community Empowerment (NICE). The VRACS project is recognized as the national centre for implementation of training competencies under the Florida Caribbean AIDS Education Centre (FAETC) International programmes in India. The VRACS project is steered by the academic backing of the University of South Florida’s CHART-INDIA (Centres for Health and HIV AIDS Research and Training Program) Centers for Health and HIV/AIDS Research and Training in India (CHART-INDIA) University of South Florida’s Colleges of Public Health and Medicine, through the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Division of Infectious Diseases, have been working collaboratively to establish health centers in various Indian states for HIV/AIDS patient health care, staff training, and medical research. These centers, which are located in states with moderate to high HIV prevalence, include: Indu Research Foundation, Baroda Medical College Hospital, and Rural Health Center, Gujarat, India; Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Hospital, Sion, Mumbai, Maharashtra; Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, Maharashtra; Government Medical College, Indore, Madhya Pradesh; and Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement Center, Mysore, Karnataka, Sterling Hospital Ahmedabad, and Kripa Foundation, India.

2] Jeevan Jyot Community Care Centre (CCC) - Kripa Baroda The Kripa Jeevan Jyot Community Care Centre at Amodar PO, Taluka Waghodia, District Vadodara, Gujarat – 390019 was initiated through project funding support from the CBCI – GFATM Round VI. The community care centre provides in patient capacity for 12 (10 adults and 2 children) with an intent to provide care and support and treatment for those PLHA referred by the district and other link ART Centres under NACP – III initiatives. Apart from this, the CCC also provides lo-cal outpatient support, community awareness, support activities, linkages and networking to-wards implementation of the NACP – III objectives. i.e. to regard the progress of the HIV epi-demic in Vadodara district. In this context, efforts are also made to specifically raise the level of awareness among women and children and facilitate safety and empowerment in the con-text of individual sexuality and reproduction. The CCC has enjoyed a tremendous acceptance and utilization of services and has significantly crossed the annual target expectations. Keeping this in view and the huge burden in the local community, there is a need to enhance the Antenatal Care services and prevention of Mother to Child Transmissions of HIV. 3] Catholic Relief Services (CRS) - Kripa Imphal A project on “Prevention of HIV/AIDS in North East India (PANI)” was implemented by Kripa Foundation, Imphal from the month of May 2004 at Keishamthong and Sagolband constituency of Imphal West district and Heingang constituency of Imphal East District, which is supported by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with an objective which is primarily focus on overall development of health condition among PLHAs, IDUs, their spouses and children. The project was designed as care and support program for PLHIV consisting of services like Free health check up, OI medicine support, Health investigation support, Counseling, Home base care, Follow up, Referral, Nutritional support for CLHIV, Training, Community Sensitization Programmes in the Project areas with CBOs in order to bring about a change in the community response to the HIV AIDS epidemic. As part of sensitization activities to the family members, CRS Imphal organizes family care givers training programmes and Peer Education Training programmes to capacitate the Peers with a view to impart this knowledge acquired to other Peers and also organizes treatment sessions that focuses on treatment part like ART adherence, Positive Living, Hygiene and Nutrition. As an effectiveness of the above services and education, the PLHAs who preferred to remain anonymous due to stigma and discrimination have begun to access the services and changes in health consciousness through positive living are being evident. Besides these, the Community response has also changed im-mensely by increase in the numbers of referral and requests to organize more community sensitization programmes. The PLHAs also receive good psycho-social support through Support Groups and Self Help Groups. Post September 2008, the Project has undergone changes in the Project Design, ‘LIFE AID’ with the goal as, ‘PLHIV in North East Live with Dignity’. Unfortunately the Project has no provision for Children Living with HIV AIDS (CLHAs), Children Affected with HIV AIDS (CAAs) and Orphans. However the staff of Kripa Imphal do provide services like counseling for ART adherence, Psychosocial Support, Games and Recreation, Residential Summer camp, Picnic, etc. During the project phase out, there will be more focus on education and provision for livelihood for the beneficiaries to enable them to sustain themselves.
