GLFADesignContestDivisionEligibility

StudentDivisionHighSchool:Opentoanystudentcurrentlyenrolledinhighschool,whohasNOTworked“professionally”asafloraldesigner.Studentmustprovecurrentstudentstatus.Oneentryperstudent.College/ProfessionalNovice:Collegestudentcurrentlyenrolledinhorticulture/floricultureprogramorenrichment, design school or university floriculture program, or an individual with less than three years’experienceemployedatafloralentity.

ProfessionalDivisionOpentoanyfloralprofessionalwiththreeyearsormoreexperienceintheindustry.Contestantsmayenterone,twoorthreecategories.TobeeligiblefortheprestigiousGLFADesigneroftheYearrun-off,contestantsMUSTbeenteredinallthreeprofessionalcategories.

GLFADesigneroftheYearIn order to attain “GLFA Designer of the Year” status, you must enter all four Professional Divisioncategories. Five individuals with the highest cumulative points from the four design categories will beselectedasfinalistsearningthechancetocompeteinaSpontaneousSurprisePackagecompetition.Namesof the five finalists with highest cumulative points from will be posted at the GLFA registration desk inalphabeticalorderuponcompletionofthedesigncontestjudging.Thefivefinalistswillhaveonehalfhourstartingpromptlyat10:15a.m.Saturday,March7,2020ontheMainStagetocreateaSpontaneousSurprisePackagedesign.The5contestantswillmeetat10:05a.m.attheGLFARegistrationDesk.Thedesigncontestcommitteewillselectallthematerialsinadvance.Finalistsareresponsiblefortheirowntools,knives,wirecutters,tape,wire,etc.Contestantswillbeaskedtoleavethecontestareaduringjudging.Thefinalistwiththe highest total points earned during the Spontaneous Surprise Package competition will be the singlewinner. Thewinnerwill be announced at the Recognition Banquet on Saturday night in theDeVos PlaceSteelcaseBallroomB.Thewinner receives$300.00cashprize, recognitionplaqueandthecovetedtitleof“GLFADesignerof theYear.” Theywillalsobethefeatureddesigner forthe“Designspotlight”section inTheProfessionalFloristMagazine.ChuckBannowAwardThis isNOTadesigncontestcategory forentry,butanawardgiven to theentry judgedas“BestOverall”from the four first place winners in the professional division categories in the contest. Because Charles“Chuck”Bannowdevotedhis life to teachingandenrichmentof the floral industry, this award carrieshisname. All designs will be evaluated based on the elements of design, professional execution of designmechanicsaswellascreativity,withparticularemphasisonoriginalityandinnovation.
