    The MSc Accounting and Financeprogramme provides a comprehensiveand rigorous treatment of key areas of

    accounting and finance. Throughresearch-led teaching by acknowledgedexperts in their fields, the programmebrings students to the forefront of theoryand practice in relevant and topical areas.

    The programme is structured so thatstudents can specialise through theappropriate choice of courses offered bythe Department of Accounting and theDepartment of Finance. Pathways areavailable for specialisation in Accountingand Financial Management; Finance;and International Accounting andFinance. Given the high level ofacademic performance expected fromstudents, a significant amount ofindependent study and preparationis required to get the most out ofthe programme.

    The MSc Accounting and Finance ishoused within the Department ofAccounting. The Department is widelyrecognised throughout Europe for itsexcellence in accounting and financialmanagement research and education,and for its leading role in public policyissues. It is one of the most highly-rateddepartments in the subject area in theUK. The Department of Accounting has

    24 full-time academic staff, undertakingteaching and research across abroad range of theoretical, empiricaland applied issues. The interfacebetween accounting and managers,organisations, institutions, public policyand regulatory bodies is a particularteaching and research strength ofthe Department. The Department ofFinance, which has 25 full-timeacademic staff members, is devotedto excellence in teaching and researchacross the full range of subfields infinance. The two Departments benefitfrom affiliations with two major researchcentres located at LSE, the Financial

    Markets Group and the Centre forAnalysis of Risk and Regulation.

    Located in Central London, the LondonSchool of Economics and PoliticalScience is a world class social scienceinstitution, attracting some of the bestresearchers and teachers in theirrespective fields, and providing achallenging environment for highlycapable students. The dynamicintellectual environment of LSEfacilitates a constant interchangeof ideas between the School andmajor financial institutions, leadingmultinational organisations and keyregulatory bodies. LSE also houses theBritish Library of Political and EconomicScience, the largest social scienceslibrary in the world.

    DurationThe MSc Accounting and Financeprogramme takes place over nine months,beginning with an introductory course toreview quantitative methods and relevantaccounting concepts and techniques.

    Programme structureStudents must successfully complete theequivalent of four full-unit courses tomeet the requirements of the MScAccounting and Finance. Results fromeach of the full-unit courses carryproportionate and equal weight in thefinal assessment of the degree.Compulsory core courses in accountingand finance provide the foundation fordeveloping an understanding of avariety of topics, themes and coreprinciples. Students can then select froma combination of optional full and half-unit courses in specific areas ofaccounting and finance to fit theirinterests and preferred specialisation.Options from outside the twoDepartments are also available.

    Programme specialisationSpecialisation options are available forthis programme to reflect the interests ofthe students, and to highlight the focusof their studies. On graduation, thespecialisation is noted on studentsdegree certificates. For all specialisationoptions, students must take compulsorycore courses in accounting and finance,plus additional courses to make up four

    full units as specified below:

    Option 3MSc Accounting andFinance: Accounting and FinancialManagementOptions selected must include FinancialReporting in Capital Markets andManagement Accounting, Strategyand Organisational Control (whicheveris not taken as one of the compulsorycourses), and further approved coursesto the value of one full unit.

    Option 4MSc Accounting andFinance: FinanceOptions selectedmust include two full-unit equivalent

    courses in the finance area.

    Teaching styleCourses are taught in lecture and classor seminar format. Lectures introducethe core theoretical and technicalconcepts whilst their associated classesallow students to discuss and applythese concepts through exercises andin-depth study. Seminars allow for thefocused study of key concepts in amore informal style and often involvepresentations by students on selectedcourse materials. Many teachers adopta variety of teaching methods to delivertheir courses such as class exercises,

    team presentations, individual or groupwork, or case study discussions.

    The applicationThe application processApplicants for the MSc Accountingand Finance programme should haveprior academic courses in financialreporting, management accounting,finance, economics and quantitativemethods. Strong candidates who do

    not have the appropriate backgroundin one or more of these areas may berequired to take additional coursesbefore being accepted.

    Minimum entry requirements are agood upper second class honoursdegree from a UK University orequivalent from an overseasUniversity. GMAT is required for allstudents without a UK undergraduatedegree. The GMAT is alsorecommended for all students withUK undergraduate degrees,particularly those whose quantitativeskills are not demonstrated by their

    undergraduate studies. Under veryexceptional circumstances, waiver ofthe GMAT may be considered. AGMAT waiver request form isavailable from the GraduateAdmissions website:lse.ac.uk/collections/graduateadmissions

    Applicants for whom English is asecond language, or those who havenot studied to degree level in English,should provide evidence of theircommand of the language. For theMSc Accounting and Financeprogramme, this would be a minimum

    of 7.0 in IELTS (at least 6.0 in eachsection) or 107 in the internet-basedTOEFL (at least 21 in writing, and 20in the other three elements).

    Admissions decisions are made on thebasis of academic merit, theachievement of a diverse group ofstrongly qualified candidates on theprogramme and the number of places

    available. Early application is stronglyrecommended.

    Given the high competition for placeson this programme, applicants whoindicate an interest in the MScAccounting and Finance specifically astheir first choice will maximise their

    prospect of admission to theprogramme. Equally, candidatesshould note the differentiatednature of the graduate programmesin the Department of Accounting,and are advised to identify their firstchoice accordingly.
