ISO 15403:2000 (E) standard states (paragraph 5.1): The single most important saety requirement o compressed naturalgas (CNG) uel is a very low water dew point temperature to preclude the ormation o liquid water at any time. Liquid water is
the precursor to the ormation o corrosive compounds through combination with components in natural gas, namely carbondioxide and hydrogen sulphide. The combination o corrosive agents, and the pressure cycling, caused by uel consumption andsubsequent relling o the uel storage container, can result in crack growth in metals and ultimately damage and ailure. Also,liquid water itsel can be detrimental as it may cause blockages, both liquid and solid, in the uel system.
Thus, the water dew point o the uel gas at the ueling station outlet shall be suciently below the lowest ambient temperaturein which the ueling station and vehicles will operate.

As the eects o moisture in natural gas systems are not always immediately evident, some NGV station builders are reluctantto address the importance o installing desiccant dryer systems in CNG uelling stations. This is despite the act that there areindustry standards and recommended practices or the required dew point o compressed natural gas used or uelling stations,
such as ISO 15403:2000(E).
The most common reason or not installing dryers in NGV stations is the belie that the gas is already dry. However, it should betaken into consideration that although the gas dew point may be as low as -40C in the pipeline at pipe pressure, the eects ocompression will aect the dew point o the gas.
Physical laws dictate that the dew point o a gas increases as its pressure increases. Thereore, although the dew point o thegas in a given pipeline may be very low when it reaches the compressor, it will be signicantly higher when the gas leaves thecompressor. This is why natural gas desiccant dryers are required in the majority o NGV stations in order to conorm to theISO 15403:2000(E) standard, specically in areas where lower temperatures are encountered during the colder winter months.

Higher concentration o water vapor per volume o gas, caused by high compressor discharge temperatures, aects the
adsorption eciency o desiccant dryers which are installed on the pressure discharge side. Oil vapor ound at the outlet o theoil-lubricated compressor can contaminate the desiccant and cause dew point collapse. Lower temperatures and oil vapor reegas on the suction side result in better dryer perormance and lower maintenance cost.
Allowing wet gas to enter the compressor is undesirable, as most reciprocating compressors are extremely sensitive to liquidwater entering the compression cylinders, which can have catastrophic results on the entire compressor.
Pressure swing dryers use 10 15% o the dry gas rom their outlet to regenerate the o-line tower. This used gas must then berecovered on the suction side o the compressor, increasing its size and decreasing the output to the storage vessels and dispensers.This is not an economical solution as compared to the suction side dryer which does not utilize any purge gas.

autoDw otion:AutoDew is a precision dew point monitor with digital dew point indication (in C or F) installed at the dryercontrol panel. The AutoDew hygrometer displays the dew point data on a monitor on a NEMA 4 enclosure. The moisture sensor isinstalled at the dryer outlet to continuously veriy the dew point. Two AutoDew hygrometer set points are actory adjusted: the rst tosignal deteriorating dew point perormance and the second when regeneration is required. A set o orm C dry contacts are providedor remote signal monitoring. Alarm settings typically conorm to SAE J1616 or each installation.
