Synopsis
This motion picture is set in the present day and concerns a couple named Barry (Martin Andrew) and Rachel McAlister (Samantha Grant). They have everything one could ask for; a great home, a successful restaurant business and two wonderful children. Their lives appear perfect, but appearances can be deceiving. Barry’s business demands a great deal of his time, and often keeps him from taking part in family activities. This puts a tremendous strain on his marriage and family.
When Gordon Hillerman (Jesse Lipscombe), one of the children’s teachers, arranges to meet with Rachel and Barry to address their son Don’s (Will Brisbin) learning difficulties, Barry is unable to attend. Rachel decides to meet Gordon alone, and together they work to assist her son Don. As feelings quickly develop between them, Gordon and Rachel cross the line and have an affair. When Rachel later tries to end the affair with Gordon, he refuses to be dismissed and becomes obsessed with Rachel and her children. When Rachel realizes that she has jeopardized her family, she confesses the infidelity to her husband. Enraged by this news, Barry walks out on Rachel, leaving her alone to face the situation she has created.
Gordon seizes the opportunity and breaks into their home, taking Rachel and her children hostage. Rachel must draw on an inner strength she never knew she had if she is going to survive and save her children. Will she be strong enough to survive this twisted game of survival and desperation?
KEVIN MATLO (Director / Producer / Writer)
Kevin’s love for film began at a very early age when he started making short films with his father’s 8mm silent movie camera. He later had the good fortune to meet Elvira Barabash, a long-time mentor and film graduate from the University of Southern California; they met several days a week over three years, discussing topics from writing, lighting and editing, to producing and directing. Kevin has been writing screen plays ever since, and is thrilled to have realized his dream of producing and directing his first full length feature movie.
Kevin realized early on that in order to produce his movie on a limited budget, he would need a compelling character driven narrative. Drawing on films from the silent to the modern era, he set out to write a screenplay that held true to the films of inspirational directors from Ford and Hitchcock to Scorsese and Spielberg. Kevin wanted to return to the thrillers from the past that drove his passion for movies. Forbidden Playground is the result.
Kevin has two other completed screenplays and is nearing completion on his fourth.
SAMANTHA GRANT (Rachel McAlister)
Samantha was born into an artistic family devoted to a high level of performance standards. Both parents were dancers and Samantha spent many hours attending rehearsals, performances, and witnessing the magic spectacle of theatre, lights, costumes, and audience. Understandably, she was drawn to the arts and decided early on to become an actress. She studied as a young teenager with the Rathbone family honing her skills and performing in theatres such as the Centaur in Montreal. Preferring to learn her craft in a more intimate environment, she joined the Studio Theatre Workshop and quickly became part of the touring company specializing in presenting Shakespeare and poetry to school aged children.
Europe beckoned and she found herself in London choosing to travel with a different focus. She spent several years living in Italy and the UK pursuing more physical activities such as skiing and climbing. These outdoor interests eventually brought her back to Canada where she settled in B.C. While in Whistler her love of theatre still tugged and once again she hit the stage. Vancouver’s burgeoning film and television industry provided the means to pursue her career in acting. Within her first month she landed a lead in an independent feature film and never looked back. Some of her credits include First Wave, Wild Wind, Los Luchadores, The Outer Limits, and also as host for her own Internet business news show and numerous informational DVDs. She also performed Lips Together Teeth Apart at Millennium Place in Whistler and Sunshine at the Havana theatre in Vancouver.
Newly married and wanting a family of her own, she relocated to Edmonton to be near family and provide a stable quality lifestyle. New opportunities presented themselves and she certified as a Group Fitness instructor ensuring a balanced and healthy way of life for her new family. She is continually working in film and television and has appeared in Heartland, Blackstone, The War Reporter, and most recently starred in Forbidden Playground.
JESSE LIPSCOMBE (Gordon Hillerman)
Lipscombe is no stranger to the film and television community. His knack for finding and creating great projects has been honed over 18 years of experience and over 30 credits (film, television, soundtrack and lifestyle). Jesse has been a part of Emmy nominated television shows (Children of the Dust & Hell on Wheels), ESPY nominated pieces (Resurrecting the Champ) as well as many nationally and internationally acclaimed productions.
His work began in the mid-nineties and has taken Lipscombe from the screen to stage and later from the director’s seat to an Executive Producer. He has written countless plays, musicals, and screenplays over the years; however, the correct role, in front of the camera is where Lipscombe finds his ultimate joy.
MARTIN ANDREW (Barry McAlister)
As an aspiring entertainer Martin began his career formally training at the West Suffolk Music and Drama center in Bury St. Edmunds, England. This combined with a 3 year training period with the RSCM in the UK would be the early foundation of a long career in the world of entertainment. Having spent a number of years playing violin in the town Orchestra he turned his attention to the world of popular music and became the lead singer and Bass guitarist of the British Heavy Metal Band “Heretic” Following moderate success, a record released in the mid 80's and countless tours throughout the UK and Europe he then traveled across the Atlantic to Canada. A solo career began with the recording and subsequent release of the 4 track EP “Night after Night” which was retired undefeated on the Ontario radio station “CKSL's” “Battle of the Bands.” Martin embarked on a number of tours across Canada in the early 90's before settling in Edmonton where his focus changed to Theater. He performed at Jubilations / Celebrations Dinner Theater in two successful shows “WKLP Rock n Roll Radio” and “Magnum PUI”. Following his 2 years with the company he was signed to perform at the Mayfield Dinner Theater as part of “The British are coming again” musical. Martin has worked in television on a variety of shows including “Mentors” and was a host on “Musicity TV”. An offer to perform as a “Rod Stewart” Tribute took Martin to the Las Vegas Strip in 2004. He has performed to audiences at many of the strip casinos as well as other venues throughout the USA and around the world. He was approached by a company in the UK to do a documentary on the day in the life of a Las Vegas Impersonator and completed the filming of “The Impersonators” in the fall of 2008. He entered into the film world and worked on the sets of a variety of movies including White coats, Domino, Oceans 13 and Middle men before landing a principle role alongside Mick Jagger, Paris Hilton, Ringo Starr and Elton John in Dave Stewart's (Eurythmics) HBO documentary Platinum Weird . Following this success Martin was approached by the British National Theater of America for a principle role in the Matt Charman black comedy “A night at the dogs”. Martin continues working in the entertainment world and his latest film appearance will be as Barry McAlister in the Kevin Matlo psychological thriller “Forbidden Playground”
