Film Poster Conventions

Film Title – Title of the film displayed on the poster Character Image – Image of the characters involved in the film Tagline or Slogan – A catchphrase that is used in advertising Location – Where a film is set, often shown in the background of the poster Cast names – The names of the cast Credit or Billing Block – The list of names that are at the bottom part of the poster Certificate – Certificates are used to give ratings to films and videos and rate the videos to an

appropriate age rating Narrative Elements – Narrative elements are all the aspets that make up a story. This includes setting,

theme, plot, characters, point of view, tone and imagery/symbolism Mise-en-Scene – This is a french phrase for ‘placing on stage’. In a film poster, there are different

aspects that create mise-en-scene, including use of language, location, type of pose, behaviour reflected in the photograph and stereotypes connected to the social group.

Film Title: This shows the name of the film. The title gives an indicator as to what the film is about

Location: The location is a shows that it is an island. The rain and waves add a chilling effect to the thriller.

The tagline suggests that there is a storyline and the is going to be a part where they go searching for the character

There is the billing block which shows the people involved within the creation of the film

Main character in the poster. The picture shows his face as if he is investigating the island.

The addition of putting Leonardo DiCaprio’s name above the title could act as a unique selling point.
