Readership- Target Audience

■ Empire is mainly aimed at both female and males, however it can be seen to be skewed more towards males between the ages of 16-30. This is because the magazine has a manly look using the big bold writing and tends to feature male characters or sexualised female characters. The magazine is also around £4 which is quite pricy therefor in order to have the disposable income to buy the magazine and will most likely be movie lovers.

■ Sight and sound is aimed more towards an older generation such as people aged 30+ who have a deep interest in films and the critical analysis of the films as well as seeing films as art.

■ Total film is aimed at younger people aged between 16-24 as they feature new films and up coming films as well as being linked with game radar which is also focused towards the younger target audience.

My Magazine Cover

■ From the research I have conducted I think that Total Film would be the best film magazine company to advertise my film as the target audience for my film are young adults also around the age of 16-24. as well as that Empire was to skewed towards males for the film I am creating, although my film has a target audience or males and females, it is skewed more towards females due to the strong female protagonist lead.

Total Film Magazine Conventions

As pictured above, all the magazine covers feature the same FILM title that takes up around one quarter of the magazine cover. The other major big writing on the magazine cover is the title of the film. Mainly featured on the bottom of the cover or on the left hand side. We also see the main image is central on the page usually featuring the main character, the image tends to cover some of FILM title, making the central image stand out even more. We also get smaller text giving a slight insight into what is featured in the magazine as well as possible exclusive interviews with actors and actresses.

Detailed Analysis

Cover Line

■ The mise en scene pictured on the cover allows the audience to establish the setting of the film and the genre. The fact that the main image is a man dressed in a cloak with weaponry on his arms connoted the idea that there may be violence and the film is set in the past. As we can see a small town in the background of the image this could suggest the main setting of the film.

■ Because the main image featured on the magazine cover is a male it is suggestive that the target audience is skewed more towards males. As seeing a strong male protagonist would appeal more towards males than females. Furthermore this could also be represented through the dark tones featured on the cover such as the blue and black as this usually appeals more towards males than females. It is also suggestive of a thriller/action genre from the dark tones suggesting a darker side to the film.
