Market share for Dutch films relatively stable at 11.8% in 2019

Admissions to Dutch films increased in 2019, but due to an overall increase in total admissions, the market share for domestic films in the Netherlands remained relatively stable. For the first time since 2016, the market share for films from the USA decreased. Market shares for films from the EU and other countries are 12.6% and 4.5%, respectively. The United Kingdom, France and Denmark reported the largest market shares for national films, similarly to last year.

Although the year 2020 will be a challenge due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dutch film industry did yield strong performances across all sectors in 2019. Total theatrical admissions were up 6.4% from 35.7M to 38M compared to the previous year.

Total Dutch film & audio-visual market revenues increased with 13.5% from €688M to €781M. Video on Demand (VOD) numbers leaped 21.6% from €324M to €394M. (2018 was the first year when VOD turnover eclipsed the theatrical Box Office.). In 2019 even more films were released into Dutch cinemas. At 492 (equating to approximately ten new films per week) this shows how competition in cinemas is fiercer than ever before. For the fourth consecutive year Dutch film production levels have risen, reaching €201M in 2019 (including, for the first time, tv series).

Attendance at major Dutch film festivals was just under 1 million, and the number of Dutch films awarded at international festivals came in at a robust 200. This serves to underline that the Dutch film industry is a vibrant one, quick to respond to audience needs and requirements, and able both to meet international standards and adapt to the rapidly changing power dynamic.

Dutch films keep finding ways to reach national and international audiences and the 2019 results are testimony to this.

The Netherlands Film Fund supported films and activities for €67.5 million in 2019

The Netherlands Film Fund offers support for the development,production and distribution of features, documentaries, animationfilms, experimental films and shorts. In 2019, 709 out of 1267 applications for financial support were approved for funding. 88 projects were granted €32.5 million in cash rebates as part of the Netherlands Film Production Incentive.

More female producers in granted projects 2019

41.6% of granted projects in 2019 were produced by a woman. In 2019 female directors represented 37.1% and of all grantedprojects 42.6% were written by a woman.

Thirty-three of these were shot wholly or partly in the Netherlands, while 25 were shot abroad. The number and production budgets of Dutch productions remained stable compared to 2018. The number and production budgets of Dutch co-productions, however, increased strongly. The Netherlands contributed to the production of 16 (minority) international features, compared to 23 in 2018. In total, these productions represent a combined production budget of €53.9 million. Dutch productions grew from 34 films and €58.7 million production budget in 2018 to €86.9 million in production budget in 2019 with 42 films. No inward investment films (or footloose productions) were shot in the Netherlands in 2019.

1.3FINANCING OF DUTCH FEATURE FILMS RELEASED IN 2019

Increased production value of Dutch feature releases: €100.9 million

A total of 63 Dutch feature releases (including minority co-productions) had a combined production value of €100.9 million in 2019. Eight of these films did not get a theatrical release. The number and combined production value represent an increase in comparison to 2018 (56 features, €95.2 million production value). Production support from the Netherlands Film Fund increased slightly, from €25.3 million in 2018 to €27.7 million in 2019. European and other public funding increased from €1.6 million and €0.5 million in 2018 to €4.2 million and €1.0 million in 2019, respectively. Other parties which funded Dutch productions included, among others, private investors and Dutch broadcasters

1.3 A FINANCING MIX DUTCH FEATURES AND FILM FUND BUDGET ALLOCATION

Mainstream and crossover features accounted for 73.3% of the Fund’sfeature financing

The Netherlands Film Fund supported a total of 41 Dutch features in 2019. Funding for mainstream titles (€12.3 million) outweighed funding for crossover titles (€7.6 million) and accounted for a larger share than last year (41.4%). In total, funding for mainstream andcrossover titles made up 73.3% (respectively 45.3% and 28%) of all funded projects. Funding for arthouse features increased with €2.4 million compared to 2019. Accordingly, its share grew with 7.4%.

39 Dutch majority features released with anaverage audience of 118,828

In total, 55 Dutch feature films (including minority co-productions) were released in 2019, a slight increase compared to last year (2018: 49 releases). Registered production costs of Dutch majority films averaged €1.5 million, which is slightly less than the average in 2018 (€1.7 million). The average production costs of Film Fund supported majority films decreased from €2.1 million to €1.8 million in 2019. On average, these features reached an audience of 118,828. This is comparable to 2018 (111,815).

Increase in number of Dutch children’s and youth features

39 Dutch feature films were released in 2019, 15 of which specifically targeted children and young adults. This is a strong increase in comparison to 2018 (9 features). Accordingly, the level of admissions grew to 1,6 million (2018: 1.0 million).

3.5 VISITS TO MAJOR DUTCH FILM FESTIVALS IN 2019

960,027 visits to 10 main Dutch film festivals in 2019

IFFR and IDFA drew, just like previous years, the biggest crowds in 2019. Admissions to IDFA grew with a little over 10,000. Facebook is the most-used platform to communicate about film festivals (in 71% of cases), followed by Twitter (48%) and Instagram (48%). In total, 141 festivals took place in the Netherlands. Most of them screened feature films (67%).

4.1TOP 20 ADMISSIONS ALL RELEASES IN 2019

Box office share top 20 exceeds 45%

The top 20 best-performing titles of 2019 accounted for 42% of all tickets sold in the Netherlands. Their box office share grew to 45%, a 6% increase in comparison to 2018 (39%). The remake of The Lion King was the best performing film of the year, selling more than 3 million tickets (8% of all admissions). It’s the first film since Titanic to do so. In total, four films attracted more than 1 million visitors. Black Widow/Penoza: The Final Chapter is the only Dutch film in the top 20 this year.

No major Dutch crowd-pleaser in 2019

Admissions to the top 20 best-performing Dutch films 2019 made up 83% of all admissions, which is a decrease compared to 2018 (90.0%). There were no major Dutch crowd-pleasers in 2019. Instead, audiences were scattered over a variety of Dutch films. The total number of admissions to Dutch films increased from 4.0 million in 2018 to 4.5 million in 2019. Black Widow/Penoza: The Final Chapter was the best-performing title.

24.4% market share for European films in Dutch cinemas, of which 11.8% for domestic productions

Market shares for European films as well as Dutch films remained relatively stable. Admissions to and the box office of Dutch films, however, were the highest since 2015. Compared to the 66 Dutch releases in 2018 the year showed a significant increase to 75 titles. The box office of American films grew as well, even though their admissions share was the lowest since 2015.

75 feature-length Dutch films released with 3,942 prints

According to the NVBF, 75 Dutch features and documentaries (majority co-productions) were released in the Netherlands in 2019 (2018: 66). In total, these films were released with 3,942 prints. The Netherlands Film Fund counted a total of 78 feature length Dutch productions released theatrically in 2019 (39 features and 39 documentaries). See charts 1.3 and 1.4, minority co-productions excluded.

277 theatres with 985 screens in the Netherlands

The total number of cinemas grew slightly in comparison to 2018. There are now just as many cinemas as there were in 2015 (277). The number of screens grew with 14. Due to theatre renovations (e.g. to introduce comfort seating), the number of seats shrank with 0.8% to 151,740.

The Dutch visit a cinema 2.2 times per year

The admissions per capita in the Netherlands increased slightly to 2.2 visits per year. On average, Dutch people now visit a cinema more frequently than people from Belgium (1.7 visits), Germany (1.4), Finland (1.5), Italy (1.7), Norway (2.1) and Sweden (1.6). In contrast to last year, major exhibitor chains now have more screens than independents and arthouses: 501 compared to 484. Major exhibitor chains added 43 new screens (+9.4%) whereas the number of screens of independents and arthouses decreased by 29 (-5.7%). Independents and arthouses do outnumber the major exhibitor chains in terms of cinemas, however.

Young people are overrepresented in admissions,but 65+ is growing

Of all tickets sold in 2019, almost one fourth (24%) can be attributed to 16-to-23-year-olds even though they only represent 11% of the Dutch population. In ten years’ time, the market share of those 65 years and older almost doubled, from 8% in 2009 to 14% in 2019. This growth comes mostly at the expense of the market share of those aged between 40 and 54 (-6%). Aging of the cinema audience is partially due to an aging Dutch population.

In total, 10.2 million people visited the cinema in 2019. Around one fifth of them (19% of the population, 3.0 million) visited a Dutch film in the cinema. Dutch films are most popular among 40-to-54-year-olds.

Following the downward trend of previous years, Dutch DVD and Blu-ray sales continued to drop in 2019. Outlets sold 118,635 units (2018: 174,922), leading to a turnover of €1.0 million (2018: €1.5 million). Turnover market share further decreased to 4.2% (2018: 4.8%).

6.2THEATRICAL BOX OFFICE, DVD/BLU-RAY & DIGITAL TURNOVER

Theatrical box office increased to €348 million. DVD/Blu-ray turnover further dropped to €39 million

Total box office revenues increased for the twelfth year in a row. DVD and Blu-ray sales, on the other hand, continued to drop in 2019. Physical retail generated €39 million, a 61% decrease in comparison to 2015. Unfortunately, no hard numbers are available for the total value of VOD in 2019. The Fund is therefore estimating the total market size. Similarly to previous years, the estimated total value of VOD has grown substantially in 2019, outweighing the total grossed theatrical revenues for the second year in a row.

Dutch audiences could watch filmsat home on a variety of services.In total, 40 major TVOD and SVOD(including catch-by) platforms were available to the public.

One TVOD service (Picl) cooperates directly with exhibitors and distributors and offers users the opportunity to watch movies at home while they are still playing in cinemas. Users pay the price of a regular ticket and can choose to ‘’donate’’ their admission price to one of the associated theatres. In comparison to 2018, the amount of views more than doubled in 2019.

In 2019, the market share of public broadcasters increased to over one third (34.6%). The remaining 65.4% is covered by commercial broadcasters, of which RTL (22.6%) and SBS (16.6%) are the largest players.
