FORMS OF ON SCREEN EDITING

• There are many different forms of editing.

• Some that will be discussed include:

• Continuity

• Montage

• Cross Cutting

• On/Off screen

• Cover Shots

• Sound

• Juxtaposition

•continuity is the illusion of continuous reality. It is seamless footage. It is used to establish the story from one shot to the next. However, there can be problems with continuity. Discontinuity’s can be on purpose. When they become confusing, this is called a Jump Cut. Ex: A man is in the background of a scene wearing a red shirt, and the shot is repeated from a different angle, but this time the man wears a blue shirt instead of red.

Continuity

•a montage is a collaboration of shots, purposely put together in order to achieve an emotional impact on the audience. Music can have a big impact with this.

•cross cutting or cutaways are shots that cut away from the action at hand. They direct the attention of the audience, to another scene in order to give the illusion of two things happening at the same time.

Cross Cutting

On/Off screen Editing

•this technique allows the subject to move out of the frame, or vice versa. It also allows us to compress time and isolate locations.

Cover Shots

•there are two types of cover shots. CUT-IN and CUT-AWAY. This basically establishes the the shot, by including images inside the frame and then out to capture images outside the frame. This method is mainly used to correct continuity error.

Sound

1. Dialogue- can be a voice over, can include acoustic qualities (accents), cultural significance, historical context, it can also define characters.

2. Music- sets emotion to the scene, sets the pace of the scene, and can determine the distance of a character or place.

3. Sound Effects (EFX)-

a) Defines location

b) Adds mood to the environment

c) Indicates loc. effect on the character

Sound is a major part of film editing. It can help influence a certain mood or characteristic of a person,

but most importantly delivers continuity.

Some forms of sound in film include:

Juxtaposition

•The Juxtaposition of a shot influences our understanding of the movie. It can exaggerate an emotion or understate it using angle and sound. Ex: A montage can include a series of smiling faces, but through the use of juxtaposition, the scene can appear very sad.
