10 MATHEMATICS IN PUBLIC RIGH SCHOOLS
Several questions might be rabed regarding the decrease in enrollmentbetween spn3esters. Do these studentik 12 to 13 percent of the pupilsin ninth-grade matbeniatica, drop out Of school? Do they fail the courseand never repeat it? Wily is the percent of decrease in algebra greateramong the boys? Are they len apt in algebra? I. it taught so it is Imreinteresting to girls? Dos the girls need algebra more than the boys?Similar questions might be raised concerning the loss of enrollment 'tillgeneral mathematics between the two earnest:era. More detailed dataon enrothpents have been, ipcluded in the appendix.

Of the mathematim dames of the last 4 yem of high school, inter-mediate algebra 'is exceeded in enrollment 'only by eiementaz7 algebra, general mathematics, and plane gecinetry. The schools in this studyreported an enrollment of mate than 13,000 stthients in intermediatealgebra which was approcimately 23 percest of the number of studintsenrolled in the eleventh grade (eft table 27). The perceit of llth-gradestudents enrolled in the course was approximately the same for both theregular and sailor high school and the ccenbined junktr-senior high schooLThere was an increase in the actual number of stOdents enrolled in first
