Welcome to Trungle Parc to one and all, for our League encounter with Vospers Oak Villa. Today our visitors have ventured as far westwards from Plymouth as is possible, and we hope they have a safe journey home later.

Last Saturday against Bodmin Town in the Senior Cup was one of the biggest games in our history. I think the team and the club did everyone proud. Despite the 0-2 defeat, the players did magnificently in difficult

conditions and the club showed it could put on a big event. We’ve now had four consecutive home matches with four-figure

attendances and an average of 193. The customer is always right! It helps of course when success brings its own publicity, but I think most people would agree it’s about real quality rather than PR gimmicks. The team is

worth watching and the club is worth visiting. Spread the word!Today we’re back with the core business of the League. At the end of

February we’re only just past the mid-point of the League season, with 17 games played and 15 to go. Anything can happen in the second half of the season, especially with a crowded fixture list after so many postponements

through bad weather and cup ties. Let’s continue to give the team the support it needs, both home and away, to help it win that first-ever title.

Three things you need to know:After today’s match, it’s Boris singing in the clubhouse from 6 pm to 9 pm, with free admission and a chance to meet the players. Our annual awards evening will be held on Saturday 25th June – everyone connected with the club is welcome. See details in this programme. Our groundsman Mike Prisk, who seems almost to live at Trungle Parc these days, had a well-deserved nomination for ‘Groundsman of the Year’, and received an inspection visit from Cornwall FA this week. Good luck, Mike!

Cheers,

Tim

QUICK QUOTES FROM QUINNY

News and views from player-manager Wayne Quinn

Welcome to our visitors from Vospers Oak Villa for this afternoon’s top versus bottom League encounter.

In many ways, we’re glad to be getting back to League action, having played only three League games since early-December. Although our Senior Cup run has been marvellous for all concerned, and the forthcoming fixtures in

the League Cup and Charity Cup add some excitement and spice, we mustn’t lose sight of the fact that we have within our grasp the chance to

make history by winning the West Division for the first time.

So, today’s match is vital to keeping up the momentum and maintaining the gap between us and the three or four strong and ambitious teams below us

who will also fancy their chances.

After the great display against Bodmin, the Peninsula’s foremost team, we’ll need to be firing on all cylinders to overcome a Vospers side who will be “up for it” after their first win of the season, 5-1, last Saturday.

Vospers have a much better playing record over the years than their current position suggests, including finishing second last season. They will want to prove that their wretched first half of the season was out of character, and I reckon they’ll give it a good go against the side at the top.

As I’ve already said, no game is easy: we have to work our socks off, concentrate throughout and be at our best in every match from now on. This includes in every sort of weather conditions, whether it’s cold, wet and windy, or warm, hard and bumpy later in the season.

Hope to hear you all today!

MOUSEHOLE MATCH-DAY PROGRAMME SURVEY

Page 6: files.pitchero.comfiles.pitchero.com/clubs/47500/...160236.docx  · Web viewToday we’re back with the core business of the League. At the end of February we’re only just past

Last Saturday, the question posed in the programme was: How can the programme be improved?

Most people thought that there was little that needed to change. One person helpfully wrote: “The programme has a perfect mix of information and fun”.

A few ideas came up, which are now being put into practice:

1. Include in each programme a ‘Player Profile’ – a few facts and some interesting bits-and-pieces on each member of the Mousehole squad.Action: Today’s programme includes the first in a series of ‘player profiles’, starting with Wayne Quinn.

2. Include in the programme ‘Player Stats’ – number of appearances, subs, goals for Mousehole. This will also enable the club to celebrate particular milestones e.g. a player’s 50th, 100th appearance etc.Action: Existing club records are being investigated and will appear in the programme in due course.

3. Improve the quality of the paper and the colour-printing. Action: Both issues are currently being researched, and the best cost-effective options will be taken up as soon as possible.

4. Spread the advertisements throughout the programme rather than clustering them on a few pages.Action: As per No. 3.

Another survey will take place at the last home match of the season, to invite your reactions to proposals for next season’s programme.

PLAYER PROFILEThe first in a new series – starting with the Top Man:

Player/Manager Wayne Quinn

Full Name: Wayne Richard QuinnBorn: 19/11/1976. Age 39.Place of birth: TruroCurrently living in: HayleJob: Night Manager / Cheesy's LackeyPlayed for:Sheffield United, Newcastle United, West Ham United, England Under 21, England 'B'Date joined Mousehole: May 2013Playing position: Centre HalfOther sports:Keen squash player (as long as my opponent is older than me!)

Best-ever football moments as a player: Making my professional debut for Sheffield Utd v Sunderland, live on Sky, in front of 32,000 people, and later representing my country 3 times.

Worst-ever football moments as a player: Two spring to mind……. -

Losing an FA Cup Semi Final v Newcastle at Old Trafford 1-0, Alan Shearer scoringFrazer Cadman nearly throwing the game away in the 93rd minute at Penryn this season. At 1-0 up, he tried a flick he’s not capable of, resulting in their equaliser. Luckily for him, Tim Nixon scored straight from kick off with the game’s last kick. I didn't see it as I was already by the changing rooms waiting to explode at Frazer! Best Mousehole game I've played in so far: Saltash at home in the quarter finals of the League Cup. They were massive favourites and we managed to squeeze past them in extra time with a Shielsy special! Great scenes followed.

A man and his pet seagull walk into a pub. They start off slowly, watching TV, drinking beer, eating crisps. As the night goes on they move on to shorts, one after the other. When the barman calls "Last orders", the man says, "One more for me... and one more for my seagull." The barman sets them up and they shoot them back. Suddenly, the seagull falls over dead. The man puts on his coat and starts to leave. The barman yells: "Hey, you can't just leave that lyin' there." To which the man replies: "That's not a lion, that's a seagull."

A man in a cinema notices what looks like a seagull sitting next to him. "Are you a seagull?" asks the man, surprised. "Yes". "What are you doing at the movies?" The seagull replies, "Well, I liked the book."

What do you call a seagull that works online? An eagle.

THE BODMIN TOWN GAME

Cornwall Senior Cup 3rd Round. Trungle Parc, Paul. Saturday 20 February 2016Result: Mousehole 0-2 Bodmin Town

After four postponements and a to-ing and fro-ing of venues, Trungle Parc had recovered sufficiently to stage one of Mousehole’s biggest days in their history. The rain had finally surrendered after two months, only to be replaced by strong winds – perhaps Storm Imogen had handed over to Gail? Anyway, she interrupted both sides’ usual fluency and created countless throw-ins.

It turned out to be only our second defeat of the season in all competitions and our first match without scoring. Bodmin, at the head of the Premier Division, and the highest-ranked club we could have drawn, were combative and determined throughout. They won the Senior Cup four years in a row from 2010 and want it again – good for them that they take cup games so seriously.

And good for us that they didn’t have it all their own way. The prolific Andrew Neale and Adam Carter have scored about 60 goals between them this season, but managed only one on this occasion, and even that one was from a couple of inches out. They took almost 80 minutes to gain the lead, after a Mousehole defensive clearance had blown back boomerang-style towards the danger area. Then, perhaps not relishing the possibility of extra time, they got a quick second goal just as we were winding up for our own grand finale. Their celebrations at the Cauliflower Field End suggested they were pleased - maybe relieved?

We had found it hard to mount sustained pressure on their defence and to test just how mobile and agile their goalkeeper was. But there were some might-have-beens. The best happened deep into the first half. A low cross from the left by Tim Nixon, Lewis Caspell steaming in in front of goal ahead of the defender, about to clout with his lethal left foot but goes sprawling, loud appeals for a penalty, “play on”, arms aloft in disbelief, half-time whistle, more protests. Match of the Day viewers will know that the same incident can have many different interpretations and outcomes - ranging from no foul, an accidental coming-together, a clear penalty, a penalty plus a red card, even a yellow card for ‘diving’. But we were the experts and we knew which one it was! Later, there were a couple of other half-moments: a Lewis shot just past the post, the goalie handling a forward pass maybe outside the area. No more than scraps, really.

No disgrace whatsoever in defeat. Bodmin are a very good side, significantly better than our previous Premier Division victims. They went to Newquay in the Quarter Finals on Tuesday and won 4-3 after extra time. We could meet them again in the League Cup Semi Finals in mid-March!

Coverage of Saturday’s match by the Cupfootballblogger and Penwith Radio, a big attendance of 235, generous comments from the Bodmin manager, and excellent reporting in The Cornishman, all made for a positive occasion and advert for the club. League results elsewhere provided a boost: Plymstock beating St Dennis and Sticker drawing with Argyle, leaving us 10 points ahead at the top of the West.

So, despite losing, not a bad day for everyone, but no thanks to Gail.

NOTES ABOUT VOSPERS OAK VILLA FC

Based on the north-west side of Plymouth, “The Villa” were formed in 1912 as Oak Villa FC. The club’s historical records are thin on the internet, but the Football Club History Database shows they joined the South Western League in 1987/88, and then left after two seasons having finished 16th and 11th.

Re-named as Weston Mill Oak Villa they were founder members of the Devon County League in 1992/93. In the first three years they finished 4th, 4th and 7th, but in the next three slumped towards the foot of the table.

In 1998 the club again changed its name, this time to Vospers Oak Villa. For the next seven years they were consistently in the top 5.

In 2007/08 they were founder members of the SWP League, Division 1 West and have remained in the West ever since. In 2010/11 and 2011/12 they were 4 th and 5th, but last year they had their best ever season as runners-up, only three points behind champions Helston Athletic.

This season started badly after the summer exodus of the management team and many players. The team suffered thirteen consecutive League defeats from the start of the season, conceding 77 goals, including three double-figure losses at home to Liskeard, Argyle and Penryn, though another four defeats were by only a one-goal margin.

While still currently in last place in the table with 5 points from 17 games, and separated from Millbrook only on goal difference because of the number conceded (90 so far), recent changes in personnel have resulted in an upturn in their fortunes. In the last four League games VOV have drawn two, lost one and won one – the latter the first victory of the season, and emphatically so 5-1 against Illogan last Saturday.

This is our first meeting with Vospers this season, the return match being the last League game of the season on May 7th.
