News: T-Mobile's G1 Gets Visual Voice Mail, Opera Browser

Source: http://www.cio-today.com/

November 25, 2008 8:39AM

A visual voice-mail application from PhoneFusion and the Opera Mini 4.2 browser have become available for T-Mobile's G1 smartphone powered by Google's Android mobile operating system. The free Opera Mini browser runs faster than the beta and is also available for the Samsung Instinct and newer phones from Sony Ericsson and Nokia.

A new visual voice-mail application and the Opera Mini browser were made available Monday for T-Mobile's Android-based G1 smartphone. The Opera Mini 4.2 mobile browser, released as a beta earlier this month, is now out in a free final version. It includes a performance increase of up to 30 percent over the beta, thanks to a farm of U.S.-based servers that preprocess and compress Web requests. It also includes skins, syncing with notes, support for multiple languages, and other features.

Opera Software describes the browser as "the world's most popular mobile Web browser," with more than 20 million users. Other features include staying in touch with friends via Facebook, searching with Google, and secure online banking,

The browser is also available for the Samsung Instinct and newer Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones. It offers browsing of full Web pages, with the user being able to zoom into a page whose text has been formatted correctly for the small screen.

The Opera Mini browser is available from the Opera Software site, as well as the Android Market, a Google app store comparable to Apple's iPhone App Store. The Android Market is also offering the beta version of Fusion Voicemail Plus from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based PhoneFusion.

Magnetic Tape

Magnetic tape is a non-volatile storage medium consisting of a magnetic coating on a thin plastic strip

It is used for video, audio storage, and general purpose digital data storage

Data is stored in frames across the width of the tape

Frames are grouped into blocks or records which are separated from other blocks by gaps

Magnetic tape is a serial access medium

Features:

• 8-inch• Designed and invented by IBM

• 5¼-inch• Storage capacity varies from 100K to 1.2MB

(megabytes) of data

• 3½-inch• Storage capacity varies from 400K to 1.4MB

Floppies come in three basic sizes:

Compact Disk

A Compact Disk (CD) is an optical disk to store digital data

It is made up of pure polycarbonate plastic disk

In a CD, data is stored as a series of tiny indentations (pits), encoded in a tightly packed spiral track of pits molded into the top of the polycarbonate layer

Infrared 780 nm laser is used to write data on a CD

Types of CDs:

• CD-ROM• CD-R/W

CD-ROM

Compact Disk Read-Only Memory

Each CD-ROM sector is 2352 bytes, and contains 2048 bytes of PC Data, 2336 bytes of PSX/VCD Data or 2352 bytes of AUDIO

A standard 120 mm CD-ROM holds 650 or 700 MB of data

DVD

DVD is also known as "Digital Versatile disk" or "Digital Video disk”

DVDs use a 650-nm-wavelength red laser

It has enough space to store a full-length, MPEG-2-encoded movie, as well as a lot of other information

Like a CD, the data on a DVD is encoded in the form of small pits and bumps on the track of the disk

• Higher-density data storage• Less overhead, more area• Multi-layer storage

DVDs can store more data than CDs because of:

Holographic Data Storage

Holographic memory allows high record density together with maximum data access speed

It is achieved due to the holographic image (hologram) coded in one big data block which is recorded at one access

The device first splits a blue argon laser beam into separate reference and object beams

The object beam that carries the information gets expanded so that it fully illuminates a spatial light modulator (SLM)

To read the stored data, the hologram is illuminated with the reference beam
