File Extensions

The format or file a document is being saved as, depending on different software’s being used such as Microsoft word 2010 compared to Microsoft word 2004 as over time they have developed and changed file extensions. A file extensions is separated by a ‘DOT’ for example if you were to save a document on Microsoft word 2010 it would be saved as ‘’DOC.X’’. However if you are going to complete the work on a different computer which has a older version of Microsoft word you would have to change the file format.

There are many different types of media for various platforms such as: music, pictures, PowerPoint, in design, adobe Photoshop, adobe reader, final cut express, comic life, garage band, internet browser. Some examples of formats are mp3, mp4, WAV, for music formats, JPEG for pictures, PowerPoint PPTX.

The main purpose of file extensions are to highlight the formats being saved and what kind of software to open it up with as different platforms require specific software extensions to be able to open and view the file itself. When saving the file there is a option in which you can save you’re format as.

As you can see the secondary research has more value with more examples of the different types of file formats and brief history of the file extensions. However you could also argue there is still summative information so more research is needed to be conducted to add more structure to the research of file extensions as it is bit vague.

If you look in this paragraph there is more critic and discrimination of the file extension which is effective as we are taking in the research we found out to pull it apart and go into a lot of detail what it is about which meets the purpose of the task. However I would need to do this for each file format as featured within this assignment which put me to the test as others were clearly analyzed whereas others weren’t, which I will go into more detail later.

That is when both primary and secondary come in with both examples from my own work i.e Mixmag and internet examples through clear illustration to be shown through either pictures or explanations such as the picture on the right showing the example of file extension in its element which is effective as you are showing an example.

If you look below secondary research is used to example to show the purpose of the file formats in detail again this is brief as it isn’t in enough detail as it isn’t giving excluding examples.
