10.30am The Mother and child schemeThe Mother and Child controversy, long associated in the public mind as the rupture in Church State relations between a bishop and a government minister, was in reality a far more complicated affair. Join UCC historian Andrew McCarthy as he looks at the origins of the scheme in the 1945 Health Bill, tracing the range of opposition to the scheme from medical, political, clerical, educational, personal and administrative.
2pm celebrating the seasonsCelebrating the changing seasons through festivals has always played a major part in the lives of people in rural Ireland. The four quarter days, St Brigid’s Day, Bealtaine, Lúnasa and Samhain were seasonal markers. In this discussion, Clodagh Doyle of the National Museum of Ireland (Castlebar) will enlighten us as to the origins of these Christian festivals. , This lecture takes us on a journey beginning with the customs of Bealtaine and continuing full circle through the yearly round of festivals.

ritual and other stories - commissionTipperary Bealtaine 2017 has commissioned artist Patricia Looby to consider, with both of these Museum talks in mind, the rituals and stories associated with images of the Madonna and Child and the tradition of the May Altar. This was present in many Irish homes right up to the 1980s. Patricia is bringing together students from her students at Patrician Presentation Secondary school and the Day Care Centre group to explore and consider statuary and images associated with May altars. A selection of Pat’s own work and that of her Day Care collaborators will be shown at The Tipperary County Museum in Clonmel in late May.
looking at lacewith Giordana Giache
In this day long talk and workshop, Limerick School of Art and Design lecturer Giordana Giache will talk about the history of lacemaking and in particular of the importance of Limerick lace which is strongly connected to East Clare and Tipperary. Also she will explore recent lace making and its place in recent art and design. The talk will be followed by a workshop on understanding lace stitches and creating them on a large scale to show lace in a modern setting.

self portraitwith Therry Rudin & Patricia Hurl
Self-portraits by their nature are an exercise in self-reflection. The first instinct is to regard ones- self in a mirror, and proceed from there - often taking a pen or pencil in hand and struggling to realise a likeness. However, the image you see is in reverse of what everybody else can see. More
importantly, it can only give a single perspective of whom you are as a person. Using a range of materials such as collected objects used to create, letters and stories, artists Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl will present a talk and a series of workshops on self portraiture, culminating in a public showing of the outcomes of the work at Damer House Gallery, Roscrea.
seconds of our timewith Brigid Teehan
Seconds of our time is a collection of fragments - voices, words and objects, to create an experimental film. A collaborative
project between the Day Care Centre, Irishtown, Clonmel and artist Brigid Teehan, participants will introduce the group to the technique of Stop Motion Animation. The project will run throughout May and be shown on June 1st at the Day Care Centre.

god has no countryDonal Courtney’s one man show tells the true story of the struggles encountered by Irish priest Monsignor Hugh O’ Flaherty and his colleagues in Rome during the Second World War.
The story follows O’Flaherty’s torment as he has to act in defence of those suffering under the tyranny of the Fascists. The play also reflects on his upbringing and education in Killarney and how joining the priesthood protecting him from involvement in The War of Independence. Told with humour and sensitivity, ‘God Has No Country’ brings the heroic deeds and achievements of this extraordinary man to a wider audience.

Dare to be WildAccess Cinema
Young Irish garden designer Mary Reynolds (Emma Greenwell, Love & Friendship) is determined to win the major prize at the Chelsea Flower Show, and travels to Ethiopia to persuade gifted botanist Christy Collard (Tom Hughes, About Time) to help her.
Christy is more concerned with his vital irrigation projects, but his reluctance evaporates when she manages to win his heart in this unusual and compelling romantic drama.
Meetings with ivorAccess Cinema
Ivor Browne has been a central figure in Irish mental health for many decades. Some people wish he wasn’t. Yet many people owe their lives to him. Browne somehow managed to be part of the establishment while still being one of its greatest critics. His pioneering and often controversial lifelong work on behalf of the many who cannot speak for themselves is notable. Alan Gilsenan’s new film captures the essence of this extraordinary human being.
With contributions from Tommy Tiernan, Tom Murphy, Mary Coughlan, Sebastian Barry, Nell McCafferty and others.
FILMFILM
Featured film for Tipperary Bealtaine 2017 is the much loved
Jailhouse rockIt’s 40 years since The King died and Tipperary Bealtaine is screening arguably everybody’s favourite Elvis movie, Jailhouse Rock. 60 years since its release, a box office smash hit in its day, Jailhouse Rock tells the story of a young man named Vince Everett who is sentenced to prison for manslaughter. While in prison, Vince is mentored by his cellmate Hunk Houghton who helps develop Everett’s musical ability. After being released from jail, Vince meets a music promoter who helps launch his musical career. Along the way, as Vince’s stardom rises, it starts to strain and test his personal relationships. Perhaps his greatest moment on screen, Elvis’ rock-and-roll persona is exemplified in the “Jailhouse Rock” dance sequence which remains one of the most memorable musical numbers in Hollywood history. So get your dancing shoes on and join us for these memorable screenings throughout the county!
