On a Sh~,: Sid~ street at VIncennes,. In lana, a small frame house,. I nea!ected, is suddenly ftt.lrj'ling Into a tourist mecca.! The street~ is "close to the bridge-wo~~" in the older section of Vln~ennes, just a stone's throw from 'the Wabash. One of th~se houses, III West Lyndale, is the birthplace of a very funny man, Red Skelton. And' today' since the owner of the prope~r. decided at last he had better ut up some kind of a modest gn to tell the world about It. t e tourists are flocking in, to see where TV's inimi· table comiF first saw the light of day; I

The owner ,of the house is are· tired senior citizen, A. L Cardinal, who aciously shows tour· ists throu the house, even the room in ich Red was born. "Red was Iways a clown," Cardinal said. "I knew him when he was a y. They lived here until he~s about eleven. His mother wa a char-woman, and Red see perennially hungry." Cardinal t on to tell about an inciden when Red as a boy came into ~ neighborhood cafe, waiting forrmeone to buy him a hamburg r. He usually got the sandwich, rdinal remembered, for everyon liked him, even felt sorry for him. Even as a boy, Red wore atl old slouch hat and hand-me-d~wn clothing. which added to hIS natural comic appearance. ' Skelton hirrtself has corroborated these factSlin recent interviews. "My moth) was so poor that she used 0 get our furniture from the Ivation Army," he said, talkin about his boyhood days in Vin!:ennes. ., Red came back to the Indiana town recen~ly to visit the home of his boyhood. Mr. Cardinal reo lates the !lvent with a bit of pride: He c.me home from work to find policemen all over the place, out i~ front, in the street. He didn't ~now what had happened until, he pushed through the crowd, made his way inside. And there was Red Skelton, BOing from room to room in the old house. takiflg his sweet time, not missing a trick. He posed for photos, ~tanding in front of a bed in tht room in which he was born. Finally he w Iked outside, looked around some more, checking the yard. , "There usee! to be a shed, over therel" he Siaid, pointing. Cardinal ,atlmitted there had been, but It had rotted down and the debfis had been cleaned

~&'aybe I sriou Id buy the house and have spme place to come back to in! myoid age'" Red quipped. ' Skelton's rnj:>ther, who is dead, is remembe~ed by many of Vincennes' senior citizens, all of whom rated 1 her as a hard-working woman. ~ed's father supposedly died biefore he was born. Red refers t~ him as a great performer in the old HagenbeckWallace cir¢us. At other times he says he \was a professor at Indiana University. Red's Christian name presumably is Richard Bernard Skelton, but his millions of fans know him simply as Red. Those close to him msist that l'Ie clowns so much that no one .is certain when he is serious Of kidding. At another tIme Red said he got his first job with a medicine show in Vmcennes, and persists he still has One of the silver dollars he ea~ at that time. Today, Red lives at Palm Springs, California, l! llong jump from the town of Virwennes on the Wabash that figured in his nostalgic moI_1Iti.
