FIGURES OF SPEECH
It is used within poems, stories & novels to help bring emotion, meaning, and imagination to the
reader.
Simile
A comparison using the words like or as.
Metaphor
A comparison which does not use the words like or as.
Personification
An embodiment or representation of an
object as having life or human attribute.
Hyperbole or Exaggeration
Over stating a statement or
situation.
Metonym
Naming of a thing by its symbolic
attribute.
Synecdoche
A part is put for a whole or a whole for
a part.
Litotes
An assertion is made by means of negation
or understatement.
Antithesis
The balancing of contrasted words or ideas against each
other.
Irony or Sarcasm
To signify the opposite of what is
usually express.
Epigram
Contrasting of words or ideas in a sentence
in a way of provoking.
Rhetorical Question
A question that doesn’t waits for an
answer.
Transferred Epithets
Use to express some characteristics
attributes or quality.
Euphemism
A mild or agreeable expression substituted for
realistic description of something disagreeable.
Allusion
Consisting of a passing, but significant reference to a well-known person,
place or event.

Words that sound like their meaning.
