Newton does not know about you and me: this place where we pretend like does not repel like, this second floor apartment with air like breathing in saltwater. It never leaves your lungs, every breath burnt sky.Newton does not know that we have been running, trying to get away. You and I sounknowing, neither of us knowing the difference between speed and velocity.

I did not know about a man named Newton before I ran or I would not have hit the road so hard: hard enough to make violets bloom on skin, to smell the sweat and blood, the scent so close, so sharp like antiseptic on the blood blistered soles of our feet.I would have known the force I hit feet to pavement with would come back and push against me, a reminder of how hard I had to press, how fast I had to go to get this body to move.

If I had known objects in motion stay in motion I would never have started running: away from gravel driveways with cracks like veins, one bedroom apartments, and a town where the old Fords beat with the whispers, you’ll never get out if you don’t leave now.Newton does not know about the tiny cracks in the skin of the earth, breathing and ripping and holding people like us, but you and I know these spaces the way we have learned Newton’s laws.

Through falling and failure, inside out, and backwards.

Sophie Coats (class of 2015), was born in Texas, but raised a Jersey girl. In her junior year of high school she traded out public school life for the boarding school experience at Interlochen Arts Academy where she studied creative writing. She was a finalist in the Interlochen Virginia B. Ball competition and later awarded a Gold Key Award for flash fiction and a Gold Key Award for poetry in the Scholastic Art and Writing awards. You can find her work in The Interlochen Review. Sophie will be headed to Northeastern University this coming fall.

Artist Statement Composers leave behind musical diaries that preserve the history of their world and surroundings. Their music sustains their voices for eternity, allowing all who listen to connect with the emotions that reflect the entire human condition. When I study a score, I find myself enraptured by the everlasting truthfulness of music. It is then my responsibility as an artist to communicate the same message. The feelings of triumph, grief, love, nostalgia, and fulfillment rendered by those before me foster a sense of common humanity between the past and present. I hope that my performances inspire those around me to embrace the memories and experiences that bind us together in unity.

A New Tradition at Commencement To honor the multifaceted artistic and academic talents of all the Arts Academy seniors, we are starting a new tradition at commencement. This year, and in future years, we will have one senior speaker and one senior performer. All seniors who wish to apply are eligible for these honors. A selection committee made up of faculty members and students reviews all applications and selects semi-finalists who are then asked to prepare their speech or their performance. Each semi-finalist auditions in front of the selection committee, and the committee chooses a winner in each category. The application and audition process is both extensive and demanding. We are proud to present our first senior speaker and our first senior performer this year. They are to be commended for their talent and passion as well as their dedication to the process that led them to be the first senior speaker and performer to be selected by the community and establish a new tradition at the Academy.

The Colors of Academic Attire

The traditional pageantry of an academic procession is one of the impressive spectacles of twentieth-century America. Its significance may seem concealed behind a baffling array of rich and somber gowns of varying cuts and vividly contrasting multicolored hoods; yet within this kaleidoscope framework, there lies an orderly and time-honored system of displaying the symbols of scholarly attainment. Although some American colleges and universities adopted the English custom of academic dress from their day of founding, it was not until late in the last century that academic attire came into general use for ceremonial occasions. The uniformity of the American system of academic heraldry, resulting from a code established by the American Council of Education, indicates the level of degree displayed by an academic costume; the field, or faculty, in which it was earned; and the institution by which it was granted. The most basic of the three parts of the scholar’s costume, the gown, differs for the three levels of degrees primarily in the sleeve. The pointed sleeve of the bachelor’s gown distinguishes it from the squared end of the master’s sleeve, which reaches nearly to the knee and is slit above the elbow. The doctor’s gown has

bell-shaped sleeves, and is the only one of the three that is permitted with velvet trimming on the front facings and cross bars on the upper portion of the arm. The American mortarboard, derived from the Oxford cap, is black like the gown. Its tassel, for holders of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, is usually black, although in some instances color may be used to identify the faculty of the scholar. Gold tassels are reserved for holders of doctoral degrees and heads of institutions. It is the hood that provides academic regalia its color and offers the most information about its owner. The silk lining bears the color or colors, of the degree-granting institution; its velvet edging displays the color assigned to that area of study in which the degree was taken. The length of the hood and the width of the edging increase with the level of the degree. Variations in this uniformity may be observed in the special gowns worn by the governing officers of a number of institutions, the colored robes of the graduates of a few universities which have departed from the tradition of black, and the diversified attire of holders of degrees from foreign universities.

Anela Oh From Traverse City, Michigan, Anela is a four-year visual arts senior. During her time at Interlochen, she has had the opportunity to study off-campus for a semester at the Oxbow School in Napa, California, where she focused on printmaking and researching kelp forests that informed the concepts and imagery in her artwork. She was also a recipient of the Robert B. Annis Foundation A-STEP Grant to research fish growth from mangroves to patch reefs in the Bahamas. Her experiences at Interlochen, supplemented by these additional opportunities, have propelled her to actively consider how her art informs the viewer about the ocean and to make it her goal to raise awareness through her thesis and the work she makes in the future. Anela will be studying environmental analysis and ceramics at Scripps College in California next year.

George Spica George is a four-year visual arts senior from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. He comes from a long line of Interlochen alumni, including his brother, two sisters as well as his parents. His own Interlochen experiences began at camp as an intermediate student. More recently, he has attended pre-college summer programs both at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work focuses on the body, exploring both its limitations and performative potential; but it also incorporates material references to further examine the concepts of exertion, exhaustion, attraction, and detraction. In the fall, George will be attending the Baelebrof Fine Arts program at the Steinhardt School at New York University.
