Fifth Sunday of Lent March 29, 2020

Dear Parishioners of the Consortium, This is now the second (third for some of you) Sunday without the sacraments. I know for me it seems so strange celebrating the Mass with only the FIH sisters every day but I can’t imagine the feeling of going weeks without the sacraments. Yet, much of the Church is going through the same thing throughout the world. Church Online One good thing about living in our time is that with the internet you can still get plenty of good faith content from places like Word on Fire, Dynamic Catholic, FORMED, Magnificat, Damascus, and others just to name a few. Just go to your parish’s website and click on the COVID-19 Tab and it will open to a page (via St. Peter website) for more ideas. We also are able to Facebook LiveStream the Masses. I and the sisters are livestreaming Mass at St. Peter at 9:30am each Sunday. Fr. Lynch’s 10:00am Mass from St. Colman can be accessed through St. Colman’s website each Sunday. We also Facebook LiveStream the 3:00 Friday Divine Mercy Chaplet with the FIH Sisters and usually one or two other Masses or liturgical events in the course of the week. St. Peter’s Evangelization Coordinator, Chris Hiles and I are going to livestream a presentation/discussion on “Practicing the Faith in the Absence of the Sacraments” next Thursday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. through St. Peter’s Facebook. Please join us as we discuss a little about the theology that touches on Spiritual Communion and the inability to go to confession and then some of the practical ways that you can keep your faith strong as you await your return to the sacraments. Giving to the Lord St. Vincent DePaul of St. Peter and St. Vincent DePaul of St. Colman continue to serve those in need during this period. They have set up a system of receiving phone calls and placing vouchers for pick-up at grocery stores or other places much needed during this time. In Waverly, Pike County Outreach continues to serve those in need during this difficult time. Please don’t forget to support these vital organizations serving Christ in the Poor. See elsewhere in this bulletin on how to give. As you can imagine we’ve been hitting well below target in offertory in the parishes these past couple of weekends. Don’t forget your tithe. You can always mail in a check to your parish office. Those in St. Colman and St. Peter also have the option of online giving. It is very easy to set up and very encouraged, just go to your parish’s website to set up. Much of the offertory that has come in these weeks has been through our online givers. Thanks to everyone for your support. We also understand that not everyone’s income is the same as it was just a month ago – it’s not the amount of the tithe that the Lord is concerned with as much as the intent to honor Him and to trust Him.

St. Isidore, Pray for Us! St. Rocco, Pray for Us!

Helping one another In each parish we have or are finishing setting up a group of persons called “St. Joseph’s Warriors” who are available to help particularly our older parishioners or anyone who is considerably more at-risk for the Coronavirus. They have volunteered to pick up your groceries or medicines or help in other ways. Please see elsewhere in the bulletin who to contact if you are in need of assistance. Also, just a reminder to check on older or more-at-risk family members, neighbors, and friends during this time. They may be needing assistance but afraid to ask. Consider taking a few moments to call anyone who might be living alone who might be getting just a tad lonely during this time of isolation. Prayer and Hope Above all, let’s keep looking to God who has for a time removed the illusion we have had that we are in control of things. Yet this should fill us with hope, that although we’ve never really been in control, He has. He has guided us thus far and will guide us to what is Good in time to come. Keep asking the Lord each day, “what are you about in this, Lord? What do you want to teach me?” – don’t waste this time. God has allowed things to unfold to a degree that has now grabbed our attention – so there must be something important that He wants to say to each of us. In Christ, Fr. Hahn

From Bishop Flaget School: Students are continuing to learn through this time thanks to virtual learning and the hard work of our staff. Shout out to our staff and the parents who are making this work. Please continue to keep us in your prayers and we keep you in ours. Do you need some flowers to brighten your day? UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS

March 30—Bob Kight—150 Plum Street April 2—Larry Heightsman 14996 Pleasant Valley, Lot 129

April 18—Marilyn Taylor , 142 University Dr., Apt. 233 Our St.Vincent DePaul Society is continuing to operate in a very modified way, relying more on phone calls and vouchers. With the shutting down of much of the service industry, many people who live paycheck to paycheck are going to be in need. We can expect a considerable uptick in persons needing assistance. Couple this with the fact that we as a parish are not going to be meeting together anytime soon, and the support that you so generously give them through the fifth Sunday collection once each quarter is going to be lost this quarter, and you can see why I have some concern that we continue to support their work in this time. If you are not comfortable giving online, you can send checks to the parish office.

Do you need one of ST. JOSEPH'S WARRIORS Any of our parishioners who are in the vulnerable class of being affected by the COVID-19 and are in need of anything, should contact Judy Harness at 740-649-5256. There are volunteers to help deliver groceries, pick up medicines, deliver a meal, and check up on you, especially if your family is distant.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Life in ChristGospel Reflection based on John 11:1-45

I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord. An innocent man mounts the steps to the guillotine. He hasn’t led the best of lives. He has seen in himself nothing worthy of honor. But he has exchanged places in prison with the young husband of the woman he loves. He had promised to do anything to protect her and hers. He has saved the man at the cost of his own life.

You may recognize the scene from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. As Sydney Carton goes to meet his death, the words of Jesus echo in his mind, what Jesus said to Martha, grieving over the death of her brother Lazarus: I am the resurrection and the life.

When my father died, I wasn’t overcome by grief. That came later. I thought about the promise of Jesus to Mary and Martha. My father, even though he should die, would live. It wasn’t just Jesus that would give him life, but that Jesus was life. It wasn’t just that Jesus would raise him up as he raised Lazarus, only to die once more, but that Jesus was the Resurrection. If you are in Jesus, you are in the Resurrection and the Life. It’s what Sydney Carton learned at last, and what all Christians, even in the deepest sorrow, must remember.

An Act of Spiritual Communion When we cannot receive Holy Eucharist in person

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love You, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer You this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Your Will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in You and for You. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Your blessings on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
