The Pastor’s Corner

We're getting near. This is our last Sunday in

Lent before Holy Week begins. Next week we'll

gather with palm branches and songs to

welcome Jesus to Jerusalem for the Last Supper

and his Passion.

It would seem this close to the cross our themes would be somber and grim. And it's true that in our Gospel Jesus describes his cross: "when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." But the context that he introduces this elevation in is glory. In a rare moment when those gathered around can hear Jesus speak with his Father and the response from heaven, Jesus calls out: "Father, glorify your name." And the reply comes: "I have glorified it and will glorify it again." This contrast in the way we see the cross, and

the way God sees the cross, is so powerful for us

to discover. We fixate on the grim heaviness of

the crucifixion, but Jesus and his Father see it as

glory, glory breaking into our world. When we

allow this insight to unlock our vision, we

recognize our experience and the experience of

the world in a profoundly different way.

This Sunday, so close to the end, we can ask God

to reawaken our longing for glory. To

reinvigorate our hearts with the true radiance

that shines from heaven, and in resurrecting our

hunger for glory, to allow us to see that each

cross, each day's cross, is our portal to splendor.

Our prayer is simple: with Jesus we pray,

"Father, glorify your name." As the realm of

glory becomes the home of our hearts, where we

naturally gravitate to, we will see it gleaming in

our daily lives.

A NOTE FROM THE FINANCE COUNCIL Some feedback that we received after the mid-year Parish

financial report had been given at the Sunday Masses during the

weekend of February 17 and 18 indicated that you might have

been surprised to hear that we were running about $27,000 over

budget at the end of December 2017. Following your feedback,

we noted that the summary of the Sunday collection that

appears in the bulletin every week indicates that we are

collecting more than our budgeted expenses, and we see how

this might have been the cause of your surprise. We are sorry

to report now that the summary of the collections has been

mistaken because we reported an amount taken from a wrong

line in the budget. We have corrected this mistake, and you can

see now how the Sunday collections are running below budget.

This Sunday at the 10 am Mass is the 3rd and last Scrutiny for the Elect (the unbaptized). What are the Scrutinies? These Rites are celebrated to help deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (RCIA 141). This weekend's gospel is the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. The celebrations of the Scrutinies also remind the whole parish community of the need to reflect on their own sins and the need for God's help. Saturday the 17th at 8 am Mass. In RCIA, there were three baptized adults who celebrated the Penitential Rite with Deacon Eldon. For these baptized Christians seeking to enter full communion with the Catholic Church, this Rite is meant to help them prepare for the healing sacrament of Reconciliation which will take place before the Easter Vigil Mass. This Rite calls the candidates to a deeper repentance and a total abandonment to the mercy of the Father who sent his only Son to die for our sins. Our prayer for these candidates, and for ourselves, is that the presence among us of Jesus who is the sum of the Law and the Prophets will transfigure all our lives with his redeeming grace, bringing us to conversion—a genuine desire to be holy as he is holy.

Come to the Feast of Divine Mercy on Sunday, April 8th! Holy Hour at 3:30 & Divine Mercy

Chaplet. Bilingual Mass at 5:00 PM Did you know that Jesus said this feast would one day be the “last

hope of salvation”? Why? What is so special about this new Feast of Divine Mercy you might be asking yourself? It is the promise of the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment for any soul that would go to Confession and then receive Jesus in Holy Communion on this very special Feast of Divine Mercy! Why would Jesus offer us something so great at this time? Jesus told St. Faustina that she

was to prepare the world for His Second Coming and that He would be pouring out His Mercy, in very great abundance, before He comes again as the Just Judge and as the very last hope of salvation.

Don’t miss out on this incredible gift of mercy that is available, in every Catholic Church, at every Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8th!

To properly celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy and to receive the forgiveness of all sins and punishment, you must go to Confession within 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday. Or if you are in the state of very serious or mortal sin, you must always confess them before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. For more information, contact Cathy at 755-1536, leave a call back phone number.
