daily to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ: to learn, to share, and to live the message of Jesus. Guided by the Holy Spirit we recognize that we are unique with diverse

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Here’s a modern paradox for you. We have technology that allows us to be constantly informed, always acces-

sible and able to find any information we need in a few moments. We can communicate with cell phones,

pagers, computers, social network sites, fax machines, landlines and even good old U.S. mail. So how is it that

the more people plug in, the less informed and more isolated they become? We are less social, less communi-

cative, more apathetic and more uninformed than ever before. Why do such powerful tools fail us?

There is no easy answer to those questions, but there is an easy way to remedy the problem. Unplug! It’s time

to reclaim the family dinner table, play board games, have a discussion about world events, read a newspaper

together, talk to a neighbor and walk or drive somewhere without our heads buried in an iPod or text messages

or BlueTooth. We need to see and hear and talk to others. We need to reconnect to people and give the batter-

ies of life a chance to recharge and renew us. If people find religion difficult, perhaps it is because religion is a

communal experience of God and we have forgotten how to be the community. Somewhere, sometime, people

will research the electronic connection and discover more joy and more satisfaction in sharing a cup of coffee

and a good chat. Don’t wait for the details. Be an unplugged human again!

ON AUGUST 26TH AND 27TH, the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be hosting fund raisers featuring Jimmy Keys. Inter-national Musical Comedy Entertainer who has captivated audiences from all over the world. On Friday, August 26th, he will be appearing at the Knights of Columbus hall in Kingston and on Saturday, August 27th he will be at the Knights of Columbus hall in Whitman.

Last year, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of our region helped some 55,000 people with goods and services totaling a value of about 2 million dollars. Fund raising is essential to allow us to continue helping others in need and we hope you will come join us to make this a success.

ORGAN FUND

St. Joseph Parish will soon receive a relatively new organ from the closed St. Frances Cabrini Church in Scituate. This is a wonderful instrument and is a gift to St. Joseph’s from the Archdiocese of Boston. An organ fund has been established to off-set the $6,000 needed to have the Rogers Organ Company, who built the organ, to install it here at St. Joseph’s. If anyone would like to make a donation in memory of a loved one to help pay for this installation, please let us know. A plaque containing these names will be hung near the organ.

ALTAR SERVERS

Saint Joseph Parish is in need of more Altar Servers. If you are in grade 5 or above, please consider serving at Mass as an Altar Server! High Schoolers may use this as community service time! If you think you may be interested either let Fr. Wally know or give the Parish Office a call at 781-585-6679. Thank you.

RCIA CLASSES TO BEGIN IN FALL: Never been baptized? Been baptized in another denomination but interested in be-coming Catholic? Baptized Catholic but never received First Communion or Confirmation? Our parish is offering pro-grams of instruction and faith formation designed to welcome adults and teenagers into the Catholic Church and to com-plete the sacraments of initiation for baptized Catholics. Please contact Ann Moberg at 508-465-1959 if you would like more information or to register for upcoming sessions.

Did you miss some Sacraments along the way? If you’re a baptized Catholic who never received Holy Communion or Confirmation we have a program designed to bring you up to speed and get you fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Please contact Ann Moberg at 508-465-1959 if you would like more information or to register for upcoming sessions.

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
