Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord:unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;

tender to me the promise of his word;in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name:make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;

his mercy sure, from age to age the same;his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might:powers and dominions lay their glory by;

proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word:firm is his promise and his mercy sure.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lordto children's children and for evermore.

COLLECT, prayer for the day

Risen Christ,your wounds declare your love for the worldand the wonder of your risen life:give us compassion and courageto risk ourselves for those we serve,to the glory of God the Father

We sit for THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The First Reading from 1 Peter 2.2-102Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation – 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 4Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in scripture:

‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious;

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner’,8and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

This is the word of the LordThanks be to God

We stand and sing as the Gospel Book is brought to the people. All turn to face the centre of church.

(496)

Lead us, heavenly Father, lead usO'er the world's tempestuous sea;

Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,For we have no help but thee;Yet possessing every blessing,

If our God our Father be.

Saviour, breathe forgiveness o'er us;All our weakness thou dose know;

Thou didst treat this earth before us,Thou didst feel its keenest woe;

Lone and dreary, faint and weary,Through the desert thou didst go.

Spirit of our God, descending,Fill our hearts with heavenly joy,

Love, with every passion blending,Pleasure that can never cloy;

Thus provided, pardoned, guided,Nothing can our peace destroy.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 14.1-14Jesus said to his disciples: 1‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ 6Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me,

4

Page 5: Fifth Sunday of Easter: Holy Communion and Baptism of Samuel Paul Isaac Benson

you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’8Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.’

At the end the reader saysThis is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you O Christ

The minister addresses the candidates through the parents, godparents and sponsors.

In baptism God calls us to new life.We die with Christ to all that destroys, and rise to live with him for ever.Therefore I ask:

Do you reject evil?I reject evil.

And all its many forms?And all its many forms.

And all its empty promises:And all its empty promises.

Do you turn to Christ?I turn to Christ.

And put your trust in him?And put my trust in him.

And promise to follow him for ever?And promise to follow him for ever.

THE SIGNING OF THE CROSS

The minister makes the sign of the cross on Samuel’s forehead, saying.

Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of the cross. Parents and godparents are invited to sign the candidates with the cross.

Do not be ashamed of Christ. You are his for ever.Stand bravely with him.Oppose the power of evil,and remain his faithful disciple to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,restore in you the image of his glory,and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.We all stand for the procession to the font as we sing

(538)O Jesus, I have promisedto serve thee to the end;be thou for ever near me,my Master and my friend:I shall not fear the battle

if thou art by my side,nor wander from the pathway

if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel thee near me:the world is ever near;

I see the sights that dazzle,the tempting sounds I hear;my foes are ever near me,

around me and within;but, Jesus, draw thou nearer,and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speakingin accents clear and still,

above the storms of passion,the murmurs of self-will;O speak to reassure me,

to hasten or control;O speak, and make me listen,

thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promisedto all who follow thee,

that where thou art in glorythere shall thy servant be;and, Jesus, I have promised

to serve thee to the end:O give me grace to follow,my Master and my friend.

9

Page 10: Fifth Sunday of Easter: Holy Communion and Baptism of Samuel Paul Isaac Benson

O let me see thy foot-marks,and in them plant mine own;

my hope to follow dulyis in thy strength alone:

O guide me, call me, draw me,uphold me to the end;

and then in heaven receive me,my Saviour and my friend.

(455)

Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer,pilgrim through this barren land;I am weak, but Thou art mighty;hold me with Thy powerful hand:

Bread of heaven,feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain,whence the healing stream doth flow;

let the fiery, cloudy pillarlead me all my journey through;

Strong deliverer,be Thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,bid my anxious fears subside:

death of death, and hell's destruction,land me safe on Canaan's side:

Songs of praisesI will ever give to Thee.
