A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH

Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank

Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to

the church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary

windows, and the wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the

main altar. Various parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As

the Diocese grew, a new cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the

children of Incarnate Word Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the

sanctuary and main part of the nave were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea”

parish. The altar, statues and stained glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St.

Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to

include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland, Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country

church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and

backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Lord, we ask You to bless all who are sick. Give

them strength in body, courage in spirit, and

patience in pain. Let them recover their health that

they may joyfully praise your name. Amen

Sunday’s Readings:

Isaiah 58: 7-10 The light we carry involves not simply personal piety or religious enthusiasm. It involves service to and solidarity with those in need. In addition to helping the poor and needy, it involves “removing oppression,” doing courageous work for justice and for the transformation of society. It is then that the light is most clear and bright.

1 Cor. 2:1-5 Paul has such clarity about his life and the work he must do as a disciple. He states it quite clearly: know Jesus Christ and him crucified. That is our solid foundation.

Matt 5:13-16 In this part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus continues to teach about discipleship. Like the staples of salt and light, necessary for human life, the disciples are necessary to spread the Gospel. Are you salt and light for others (family, coworkers, neighbors, strangers)? Do others see in you one who not only loves God, but imitates Christ in your daily life? Retrieved from: www.churchofepiphany.com

In this weekend’s readings and psalm, the prevailing theme is that of light: We are the light of the world; our light breaks forth like the dawn; our light shines in the darkness; our light reflects generosity and justice. Good stewards know they are the lamp, and Christ is the flame that, through them, illuminates the earth. They know that they carry Christ’s light in their hearts, and let it shine through their words and deeds. What are we doing to shine Christ’s light on the hungry, the homeless and others most in need of God’s mercy? How do we exercise good stewardship over the light of Christ that burns within each of us? Retrieved from: www.catholicstewardship.com

A Catholic Journey of Faith - You are invited to attend a 9 week Catholic Faith Course at Christ The King Catholic Church Parish

Hall (3423 Rojo St., Corpus Christi) on Thursday nights starting Feb. 9th from 6:45 pm—9:00 pm. No cost to attend and different

dynamic speakers each night. Contact Dale Pittman (361-949-8332) or Christ The King Parish Office (361-883-2821).

There are lots of volunteer opportunities and every volunteer is greatly appreciated. Look for sign-up sheets to be posted at the back of

the church. We have so many wonderful volunteers and still need more. It’s a fun and rewarding experience!

Turn in raffle ticket stubs and money as soon as

possible after they are sold. There are still ticket

packets available at the back of the church. Please

take one and sell the tickets to support the parish.

If you’ve already taken a packet, please consider

signing out more. Our goal is to sell out, and we

need everyone’s help!

Auction items can now be left in the parish hall.

Please bring items as soon as possible to allow

time to organize prior to the fundraiser. Food

items may be brought on the day of the

fundraiser. Please call Pam Farley (361-643-2478)

if you plan to bring food items, need to coordinate a time to drop

items off, or have any questions.

Please join the Parish Bible Study Group for a weekly encounter with Jesus in the Scriptures entitled “Signs and Wonders:

Encountering Jesus of Nazareth” every Thursday, 6PM - 7PM, in the Parish Hall. The Bible study sessions, prepared by Word

Among Us Publications, include some of the most dramatic Gospel episodes: the wedding at Cana, Jesus

walking on water, and the raising of the little girl who had died. The group reflection sharings allow

participants to come to a deeper understanding of Jesus—and why we choose to follow him.

All parishioners are invited to attend a meeting February 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall to discuss the annual fundraiser. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.
