WELCOME TO ST. PAUL PARISH Whether you are new to the area or just visiting, we welcome you to our parish! If you’re interested in becoming a member, or just

want to find out more about us, contact the Parish office @ 262-968-3865 or go to our website: www.stpaulgenesee.net.

Merciful Like the Father: Pope Francis tells us that this special Year is a time “to bear the weakness and struggles of our brothers and sisters” (MV 10), an occasion to “open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters” (MV15). We can do so when we recall how much God looked upon our own wounds and misery with untellable, unlimited love and mercy. Let us pray for the grace to be effective signs of the Father’s mercy to others. (from Magnificat: Year of Mercy Companion)

The month of February is devoted to the corporal Work of Mercy Feed the Hungry.

And one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? (James 2:16)

“I was hungry and you gave me food” (Mt 25:35) Nothing but the literal meaning of these words should be accepted. This statement may shock us, and yet a deep conviction in faith that Christ himself is present in the poor must be our primary motive in performing the corporal Work of Mercy. Any interpretation of Matthew 25 and the corporal works that would diminish or dilute Jesus’ words reducing them to symbolic evocations, contradicts his own clear statements. It is he whom we feed in the poor.

That is how saints understood all the corporal Works of Mercy. Mother Teresa is a contemporary example: “We should not serve the poor like they were Jesus. We should serve the poor because they are Jesus.” In giving food to the hungry, whether we realize it or not, we place ourselves before the concealed presence of Christ himself, who has chose to become one with the poor. The action directed to a real human person is always, inseparably, also touching a hidden but real presence of Christ himself. (Father Donald Haggerty in the Magnificat: Year of Mercy Companion)

Loaves and Fishes Thank You!

I would like to thank you, on behalf of the Kettle Moraine Food Pantry patrons and the volunteer staff, for your continuous and generous support. Each month, through the Loaves and Fishes collections, you give us many food items and monetary contributions which help purchase laundry detergent for the food pantry. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

In addition to the above mentioned support we have several parishioners who donate their time and talents to the pantry and we are always looking for more helpers.

All of us, together as a community, are contributing to the Corporal Works of Mercy- “Feed the Hungry” and “Give Drink to the Thirsty”

We also want to thank all of the children who donate items of food each week as their weekly stewardship offering.

May God Bless all of you.

A gift from your parish for Lent

Parishioners at St. Bruno and St. Paul are invited to take home one copy per family of "Rediscover Jesus" by Matthew Kelly before Lent begins. Books will be available in the Gathering Place/Gathering Space outside of church the weekend of February 6/7.

It is our goal to create a "community conversation" by sharing an-swers each week to one predetermined question related to the readings. Individual responses will be emailed to the parish and post-ed on the website/in the bulletin allowing the entire parish to view others' responses. The book has 40 short chapters for daily medita-tion from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, excluding the Sundays of Lent. Each meditation includes a question to consider. The weekly “community” questions were selected to elicit answers that are more generic in nature, nothing private or confidential.

Parishioners are invited to subscribe to a Lenten email from Dynamic Catholic. The link is http://dynamiccatholic.com/bestlentever/#parishresources

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS

The Catholic church asks each member to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent. For this reason:

A) Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent;

B) Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two oth-er meals, but no food should be consumed at other times dur-ing those two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.

Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

"Rediscover Jesus" Question of the Week

For the week of February 10-13, corresponding readings are #1-4. Please respond to the "Question to Consider" from #3: "What area of your life will benefit most from accepting God's invitation to rediscover Jesus?" A brief response can be emailed to [email protected]. Please put ANSWER OF THE WEEK in the subject line. You can also drop off your an-swer at the parish office or leave a message on voicemail at St. Paul 262-968-2276 x 202.

Answers will be posted anonymously on the website and in the bulletin so that we can journey together spiritually as we engage in a "community conversation." As Matthew Kelly says, let's make this the "Best Lent Ever."
