Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

What exactly are we looking for, especially in every male-female relationship? A simple, truthful way to answer that question is to say our hearts are searching out the only real thing that matters, that is, God’s love, which is free, unconditionally faithful, universal yet particular, and creatively self-giving. We want to be free yet fully secure, to be “special” yet not imprisoned, to be fruitful with our beloved yet not constrained by our offspring. What we miss is that these qualities are opposites and can only be realized in God. We ALL need deep healing to see that God is also free, and that real fidelity demands freedom. It takes time to discern, most of the time with the needed help of another person, to distinguish what is of God and what is due to another person’s own need for healing. Healing enters our lives when we begin to see that all true authority comes from God and that God’s way is revealed in Jesus. Jesus did not control people but left them free. Our QUEST for GOD is a desire for total self-gift, but if that is identified with sexual expression (exclusively), failure to attain sexual expression will feel like a separation from ultimate love, whereas acting on that desire collides with our state in life. No wonder our “loves” bring such confusion, disillusionment and betrayal of our hopes. When, by God’s grace, the identification of sexual love with divine love is broken, a human person is freed to an individuated, spiritual bonding, a “love of restraint” that is grounded in God. This spiritual love separates us from being determined by lower levels, like sexual drives or emotional needs, even though these still play an important role. This spiritual love frees us to a kind of sacrificial love that, according to Fr. Bob Sears, SJ, is distinguished and described as “individuated relationships.” Remember, Jesus in the New Testament takes up the bridal imagery of the Old Testament as a living analogy for His relation to His Church, His Body (Eph 5,25-33). Both sexual union and union with God are involved in our coming to wholeness and holiness and the release of our creative energies for building up God’s people. You can see then, how the two are therefore connected: the misuse of sexuality is a major cause of infidelity to Yahweh; and the right use of sexuality in marriage and celibacy, on the contrary, is a major help for opening fully to God. Again, as Fr. Sears has written, this confusion between our need for God and our need for one another is perhaps the deepest cause of gender conflict. God is involved in our wholeness and integration of inner masculine and feminine as well as in our call to co-ministry. “Often the ‘stickiness’ of relationships (a ‘falling in love’ or ‘fatal attraction’) is due to a projection of our desire for God or to find ourselves onto finite relationships,” explains Fr. Sears. If we fail to discern when we are looking for a savior or when for our true self in our human friend, only disillusionment and fruitless pain will result. No wonder we love and hate the other at the same time! Let me conclude with an image taken still from the Old Testament, which, as we know, always points to its fulfillment in the New Testament, in particular, to its fulfillment in the life of Jesus and Mary. In the beautiful Book of Tobit, Tobit is a dutiful and faithful Jewish man, but he is also another Job figure, tragic with great sufferings and terrible, devastating mishaps. He goes blind due to a bird’s dung dripping into his eyes once when he was sleeping, he loses his money, he is alienated from his wife. In his despair, he prays, and is inspired to send his son Tobias to a distant relative, Raguel, to get a deserved inheritance, and it so happens that the Archangel Raphael is sent with him as guide. Raguel’s daughter Sarah is also an eligible wife, but she has had seven husbands and all have died on their wedding night because of Asmodeus, an evil spirit possessive of Sarah. On their way, a fish bites Tobias’ foot, and Raphael tells him to keep it because the heart and liver when burned can drive out evil spirits, and the gall of that fish when applied to the eyes can heal cataracts (such as his father’s blindness). And so it turns out! Raguel does give Tobias Sarah as wife after explaining the danger involved, and before they come together, they burn the fish’s liver and heart and so Raphael binds the evil spirit Asmodeus in the North Country. Then, on returning home, Tobias runs the fish’s gall on his father’s eyes and Tobit says, “I see you my son, for the first time!” This story of Tobit and his son Tobias is full of symbolism touching upon the purification of sexual and human love. The heart and liver of the fish need to be burned, purified by fire, as a human being’s unconscious needs to be burned to be freed from distortion of idolized humanity (represented by Asmodeus). Then Sarah and Tobias can come together with a love “that has no lust” but is for God’s honor and glory. Finally, in the end, when Tobit looks at bitterness in the eye, his own blindness is healed through the bitterness of the fish’s gall. Tobit sees with new eyes, just as if we look at Jesus “raised up” as the serpent in the desert, and so we will be saved. Only through the pain of that purification will we love with a holy love, a sacrificial love that puts God first. This Spirit-centered love revealed in Jessu is like God’s love, special, faithful, open to being life-giving to everyone, creative and releasing creativity. Jesus comes as the Bridegroom of the Church, to heal gender wars within and among us. Jesus, Bridegroom of your Church and Bridegroom of each one of our souls, pray for us, and heal us and our whole human family!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

The Gift Shop will be temporarily closed on weekends. Watch the bulletin for further details as to when it will reopen.

Every gi to the CMAA makes a difference! The opening report for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) in today’s bulle n details the many ways our annual appeal helps us do God’s work here on earth and be His partners in caring. As you will read in the opening report, the CMAA supports thirty ministries that benefit so many throughout the Diocese of Joliet. Your gi s to the CMAA will make a difference to members of our parish, friends and neighbors, and our brothers and sisters in need. Please complete the pledge card you received from the Diocese of Joliet and return it in the provided envelope or bring it with you to Mass next weekend. Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $76,500. If we raise more than this goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Thank you for prayerfully reflec ng on your gi to this year’s CMAA, and making the most generous pledge possible.

Come join us at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 13th in the Parish Office. This is our opportunity to meet with members of Dominella Architects and hear how they could help us meet our goal for our new church.

Dear Fr. Gorsic, It is my pleasure to inform you that St. Andrew the Apostle Parish has surpassed its 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) goal.

As in the past, parishes that surpass their goal receive a rebate for the funds raised and paid in excess of their goal. This year, as we previously announced, the rebate percentage was raised for 65% to 70%. Please accept our gratitude and appreciation for all you have done to make this year’s Appeal a success. This year we have received approximately $8.0 million in gifts from over 36,500 donors. This has provided vital resources for the diocese to do the work of God’s Church. Enclosed please find a check in the amount of $7,301.08 for your parish. On behalf of Bishop Conlon, the entire diocesan curia, and all those who benefit from the CMAA, please extend our sincere gratitude to he generous people of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish. Please also extend our appreciation to the volunteers who helped make the Appeal a success this year. Once again, thank you for all you do to support the work being done in the Diocese of Joliet and your parish. Sincerely, Michael Bava Chief Financial Officer

2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s. Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT
