We’re Not Stupid After All
R ock The Earth: “We are living in the age of stupid”, was the
theme of the concert. So far, the best concert I’ve seen in
my four years at SJII. If I had to describe it in one word, I’d
use “Epic”. Combining the raw display of quality talent with
quantity made it really worthwhile.
The night began on the beat of our resident Deejay (DJ) and mixer,
Jonathan. He warmed up the crowd, and prepared the audience for the
intense evening ahead. There were a dozen bands performing their
hearts out that fateful night. To name a few; there were the Tofu Fight-
ers, Shyk4n, CuSO4 and Surprise Surprise! Included are a few other fa-
miliar faces and several newcomers into the SJII music scene.
The Audio, Sound and Stage crew, in collaboration with the per-
formers , made sweet music together in perfect harmony. With the cool
effects such as the dry ice and other individual aspects made the whole
show a little better. For every paragraph in an English essay there has
to be a Topic statement, as to how, they were our unique emcees for
the Rock show. They honestly deserve more recognition.
Even though the concert was three hours long, it felt much shorter
than watching Lord of the Rings. In other words, it was really enjoy-
able and entertaining. Adults were head banging, we were ‘Moshing’;
wiki definition “the activity in which audience members at live music
performances push and/or slam into each other for fun and in a non-
hateful way” . I guess it’s just a ritual of affection for one’s fellow man.
The Environmental Council and Music Council weren’t gentle in
their approach, and I like that very much. They wanted to get the mes-
sage across the best way they could. That was through this concert.
Overall the concert was fuelled by the support of friends, the Environ-
mental Council and teachers, which made this event a complete suc-
cess.
Are we living in an Age of Stupid? If so, how’d they organise it.

Editor’s note
As the term comes to an end, it’s time
for our juniors to step up to the plate as the
Grade 12s will be stepping down to deal
with our upcoming exams and the overall
workload of IB. This issue is dedicated to
our founder, St John Baptist de la Salle,
whose our founder’s day’s assembly and
dinner was held recently.
The June holidays are fast approaching
and we bid adieu to the school workload
for a while. These holidays also mark the
end of our editorial leadership within the
newspaper, and we wish the Grade 11s all
the best in keeping up with events in
school and crafting a newspaper that not
only informs but entertains the student
body. We had a good time covering events
that make this school a better place, and
hope you had an equally enjoyable time
reading it as we had producing it.

The newly elected Senior Council went on retreat
to Desaru at the beginning of May to reflect and to dis-
cern the roles each would play in the Senior Council
for the next year or so. The Senior Council’s main role
in the school is to care for the welfare of the students
in the Senior School, and to plan and organise events.
This role was clearly fulfilled very well by the previous
Senior Council, who ran this year’s Welcome Week for
the current Grade 11s, which was an astounding suc-
cess.
So the newly elected council headed to Desaru on
a Friday, and returned on a Sunday, filled with a mis-
sion and a plan for each of their different departments.
Although there were many highlights during the re-
treat itself, probably the most important event that
happened during the retreat was the voting of the
president and the vice president of the Senior Council.
This process required a candidate to have at least 70%
of the votes before being named either president and
vice president, and this took nearly 2 hours, and
stretched into the wee hours of the night before the
president and vice president were finally named. In
the end, after a long and emotional voting process, Ivor
Tan was elected as the new president and Joshua
Prashad was named the new vice president. They take
over from Bradian Muliadi and Amanda Ang respec-
tively. The other roles of the council were also set that
night, and are as follows:
SENIOR COUNCIL RETREAT TO DESARU
Administrative Secretary Louisa Quek
Arts Secretary Gerard Lee
Communication Secretary Lim Dao Kai
Faith Secretary Glen Koh
Service Secretary Perry Kwan
Sports Secretary Forlando Tambunan
Special Projects Secretary Maria Arulraj
Student Welfare Secretary Vincent Tanutama
As heard by incoming president, Ivor Tan from
his speech during the Founder’s Day Dinner and Sen-
ior Council Investiture, he envisions the council to be
one for the students and to do the best it can for the
students in the Senior School.
Of course, the retreat was not all work and no play,
with lots of free time, the councillors managed to bond
better with each other, such as going to the sea to-
gether and having a relaxing swim. But
through all that, all the councillors
were asked to examine them-
selves and they learnt how to be a
better leader to those around
them. So let us all support the new
Senior School Council as they em-
bark upon a new journey through
their term, and say good bye to
the old one, which left behind a
legacy!

Founder’s Day Dinner
Bye Old Council, Hi New Council!
Reported by Petrus Bosa Layarda
The Founder’s Day Dinner took place in the Glass
Hall on the 14th of May 2010, with more than 80 stu-
dents donning their formal wear to the event. Our very
own Ricardo Seah acted as the emcee for the dinner,
which included a handing over ceremony from the
2009/2010 council to the newly-elected 2010/2011
council. However, the event wasn’t only limited to SJII
students, but to schools such as SJI, St. Patrick’s Insti-
tution, Hwa Chong Institution International, Anglo Chi-
nese School International and Catholic Junior College.
The school rally was sung to start off the dinner,
followed by Mr. Brian Christian, Principal of High
School giving the opening address and introduced
Brother Thomas Lavin, Brother Visitor and Acting
Brother President of our school. At the end of his
speech, Brother Tom enlightened the audience about
the three Lasallian values: Faith, Service and Commu-
nity, and shared his experience living in Hong Kong
and Nigeria before appointed the Brother Visitor of the
Penang District.
Of course some enjoyable entertainment was es-
sential, with the icing on the cake being the Glee Club
starting off the series of performances. Other perform-
ances followed at intervals throughout the evening,
ending off with a break dancing act. At 9pm, the induc-
tion ceremony of the new council began. Bradian Muli-
adi, former President of the Senior Council, gave his
last speech before introducing the ten members of the
Grade 12 Senior Council. This was followed by the
presentation of the new ten members of the Grade 11
Senior Council who received a collar pin from Brother
Lavin as a symbol of commissioning the task they were
about to undertake. The outgoing councilors put the
blazer on the incoming councilors as a symbolic ges-
ture of handing over the responsibilities.
To conclude the dinner, the guests were invited to
sing Glorious Patron and joined in the chanting of SJI’s
Hail.

An Evening with Darth Vader Reported by: Ivor Tan
At the appointed time, Darth Vader walked down the
aisle of the school hall, brandishing his trademark red
lightsaber. He took his place at the head of the orches-
tra and was greeted by three other lightsaber wielding
characters. The Movies and Musical night kicked off
with Darth Vader conducting the orchestra to play the
20th Century Fox Fanfare with his red lightsaber as his
baton. After this, Darth Vader revealed himself, and it
turned out to be Mr John Venables. Although these the-
atrics were used only for this one song, the rest of the
Movies and Musicals Night was truly an eventful and
pleasant one. The orchestra thus proceeded to play
songs from the hit movies Jurassic Park and E.T.
Next up was a guitar ensemble which played
“Stand by Me”, followed by Darth Qi Qi, AKA Amanda
Ang and Gabriel Woon, dressing up as the wicked
witch and the good witch respectively, and singing the
song “Defying Gravity” from the famous musical
Wicked. This was followed by the SJI International
choir singing “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and
“When You Believe” from Prince of Egypt, with various
members of the band, dressing up as different charac-
ters from different movies. Examples would include
Daniel Lim dressing up as Tony Stark (Ironman), with
a homemade “arc reactor”, Glen Poi dressing up as
Rambo and Joshua Rebeira as Aladdin.
Right after the choir, came the Jazz Band, which
played numbers from the classic movies such as Ti-
tanic, The Pink Panther, The Beauty and the Beast and
Finding Nemo. The song they played from Titanic, “My
Heart Will Go On”, was further enhanced by the vocals
from Lee Si Ying. Just like the choir, many members of
the band, such as Mitchell, who dressed as a pirate,
Ryan, who came dressed as Indiana Jones, and Vincent
and Shaun, who came dressed as the Men in Black, fur-
ther enhanced the spirit and the atmosphere of the
night. Our very own principal, Mr Andrew Bennett,
was present in the Jazz Band, playing the saxophone.
After this, Cassie and Jeremiah James graced the stage
and sang the song “The Prayer” by renowned singer
and song writer Andrea Bocelli.
The night ended off with a blast, with the orches-
tra once again playing. This time, they played their
trademark songs from the Pirates of the Caribbean and
from Star Wars. And this truly was a fitting way to end
such an awesome night, with the extraordinary skills
of the orchestra shining in their last songs of the eve-
ning.
Overall, the Movies and Musicals night could be
seen as an absolute success, as it showcases the talents
of the people in our school, both teachers and students
alike. Therefore, with this in mind, we look forward to
more musical extravaganzas in and around the school,
as they’re not to be missed!
